“I Got a Thing, You Got a Thing, Everybody’s Got a Thing” was an early Funkadelic chant featuring the infectious wah guitar of Funkadelic rhythm guitarist Tawl Ross. The first Funkadelic album had a personnel mixture featuring the Parliafunkadelicment Thang (the five post-1960s Parliaments and the five original Funkadelics) as well as P-Funk mainstay vocalist Pat Lewis and members of the Motown house band. This record ingeniously combines the previously mentioned lineup.

  “Funky Dollar Bill”

Vocals: Tawl Ross, George Clinton, Billy Nelson

  Drums: Tiki Fulwood

  Bass: Billy Nelson

  Guitars: Eddie Hazel, Tawl Ross

  Piano: Bernie Worrell

“Funky Dollar Bill” was an early sociopolitical song for Funkadelic, touching on the evils of capitalism in postmodern society. It features the five original Funkadelics at their height along with vocals that would later be described by pundits as “wooly booly.”

“I Wanna Know if It’s Good to You”

Lead Vocals: Eddie Hazel, Billy Nelson

  Drums: Tiki Fulwood

  Bass: Billy Nelson

  Keyboards: Bernie Worrell

  Guitars: Eddie Hazel, Tawl Ross

“I Wanna Know if It’s Good to You” features classic vocals by Eddie Hazel and Billy Nelson. It is notable as well for some of the thickest rhythm guitar ever heard (Tawl Ross), the undisputable lead tones of Eddie Hazel, and one of the most captivating keyboard solos by Bernie Worrell, matched by the rhythmic bedrock of drummer Tiki Fulwood and bassist Billy Bass Nelson. This is prime Funkadelic.

  “Some More”

“Can You Get to That” evoked a folksy side of Funkadelic also seen on the Parliament Osmium album released earlier. The lyrics use financial terms as hyperbole, something George Clinton would continue later with “Wizard of Finance” as well as Bernie Worrell’s “Hold On to You.” The original version of this song was by the Parliaments and was called “What You Been Growing?”

  “Hit It and Quit It”

“You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks” is another sociopolitical treatise by George Clinton and company (this time with lead vocals by Funkadelic bassist Billy Nelson), dealing with racial and cultural divides. It continues the tradition of “I Got a Thing” from two albums earlier.

“Loose Booty” was first recorded in the Osmium period, though this is considered the pivotal version. Funkadelic comedian (enviromedian) James Wesley Jackson is heavy in the mix on juice harp. George Clinton delivers a very early rap though not even his first, as several songs predate this (“A Whole Lot of BS” is a notable one, and many could also argue for “Mommy What’s a Funkadelic” and “What Is Soul,” although arguably both are more spoken word than “Loose Booty” or “A Whole Lot of BS,” which are more rapped). The lyrics deal with junkies and other street themes, predating hip-hop’s style as well as its usage of a common subject matter therein.

“Biological Speculation” shows off more of Funkadelic’s country music side and evinces some of George Clinton’s most clever and recited lyrics ever. The America Eats Its Young album that it comes from would be P-Funk’s most political at this point and lists among Clinton’s most political albums along with Some of My Best Jokes Are Friends, Dope Dogs, and Medicaid Fraud Dogg.
