She stopped at a park bench, sitting for a moment to collect her thoughts. The uncertainty ahead was daunting—there would be questions, conversations, and possibly even heartbreak along the way. But as she closed her eyes and felt the sun on her face, Ana also felt a quiet determination growing within her.

Her mum’s approval of David, her gentle nudges toward stability and security, had always come from a place of love. But Ana couldn’t ignore the way her heart raced when she thought of Lara—the way Lara made her feel seen, understood, and truly alive. It wasn’t just about attraction; it was about connection, about finding someone who made her want to be her best self.

Ana took a deep breath, the weight of her decision pressing on her chest. She knew her mum meant well, but she couldn’t keep living to meet someone else’s expectations. I deserve a chance to be happy, she thought, her resolve firming. And I think that means I have to give it a try with Lara.

With a final deep breath, Ana stood, her determination solidifying. She didn’t have all the answers yet, but she knew one thing for certain: she owed it to herself to try.

  ***

The morning sun streamed through the wide windows of the veterinary office, filling the space with a soft, golden glow. The faint hum of conversation between colleagues and the occasional bark or meow created a familiar symphony that Lara found comforting. She greeted everyone with a smile, her hands already busy with the morning’s charts.

Her first patient was Princess, a stocky bulldog with a bandaged paw. As Lara knelt beside her on the exam table, the gentle scent of antiseptic mingled with the earthy smell of the dog’s fur.

“Good morning, Princess,” Lara said softly, scratching behind the dog’s ears. “Let’s take a look at that paw.”

Princess wagged her tail, her droopy face lighting up at Lara’s touch. Her owner, Mrs. Thompson, stood nearby, worry etched into her features.

“Is she going to be okay, Dr. Lara?” Mrs. Thompson asked.

Lara glanced up with a reassuring smile. “It’s just a small cut—nothing serious. I’ll clean it, re-bandage it, and she’ll be back to her normal self in no time.”

As she worked, Lara’s thoughts wandered to Ana. The memory of her standing at the door in her pajamas, looking both shy and stunning, brought a warm flush to Lara’s cheeks. Ana’s smile, her laughter—it had been years since Lara had felt this alive.

“All done, Princess,” Lara said, giving the bulldog a final pat. “Just keep her from licking the bandage, and she’ll be good as new.”

“Thank you, Dr. Lara,” Mrs. Thompson said, her relief evident. “You’re always so wonderful with her.”

Lara smiled. “She’s an easy patient. Have a great day!”

As Mrs. Thompson left with Princess trotting behind her, Lara allowed her thoughts to drift back to Ana. Last night had felt like a turning point, like a door opening to something new and extraordinary. But it wasn’t without its complications. The idea of putting her heart on the line again was both exhilarating and terrifying.

Through the morning, Lara worked with steady hands and a focused mind, but Ana was never far from her thoughts. The idea of their first date played in her head like a puzzle she wanted to solve perfectly. Dinner and a walk? Too ordinary. Something adventurous? Maybe too much for a first date. Then an idea struck her—a visit to the dog shelter where she volunteered, followed by a simple dinner at her place. It felt right, like something that would let Ana see a piece of her world while also keeping things relaxed.

By lunchtime, Lara had seen half a dozen patients, including a skittish tabby cat and a hyperactive terrier with an upset stomach. She sat at her desk with a sandwich in hand, her mind turning over the details of the date. Would Ana like it? Was it too casual? Too personal?

Lara shook her head, smiling to herself. She was overthinking it, something she tended to do when she cared too much. But she couldn’t help it—this was Ana, someone who already felt so special, so different.

The thought of seeing Ana again made her chest feel light, and she found herself smiling more easily as the afternoon went on. Her last patient of the day was a puppy with a stubborn ear infection. The little guy squirmed and whined as she examined him, and his young owner, Tommy, watched with wide, anxious eyes.

“Your puppy’s going to be just fine,” Lara said, her tone soothing as she worked. “This medicine will clear up the infection. Just give it to him twice a day, okay?”

Tommy’s face lit up. “Thanks, Dr. Lara! You’re the best vet ever!”

Lara laughed, handing him the tiny bottle of drops. “Take good care of him, Tommy. And don’t forget to give him lots of love, too.”

As the clinic began to wind down for the evening, Lara gathered her things and pulled out her phone. She stared at Ana’s name in her contacts, her thumb hovering over the call button. Her heart pounded as she thought about what to say.

She closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. The memory of Ana’s smile gave her courage. She tapped the screen, and the phone rang.

“Hey, Ana!” Lara said when the familiar voice answered. “How are you?”

“Hi, Lara! I’m great, thanks. How about you?” Ana’s cheerful tone sent a wave of warmth through Lara.

“I’m good,” Lara replied, smiling. “I was wondering if you’d like to go out with me this weekend.”

“Yes, I can’t wait!” Ana said. “I’ve got a surprise planned, so dress casually—and be prepared to get a little dirty.”

Ana laughed softly, a sound that made Lara’s stomach flutter. “You’ve definitely got me curious. What should I wear exactly?”

“Jeans and a t-shirt will do,” Lara said. “And bring Max. If you like, he’s part of the plan.”

“Max is in?” Ana teased. “Now I’m even more intrigued. What time should I be ready?”

“I’ll pick you up at 2 PM,” Lara said, her heart soaring with relief and excitement.

“Perfect. I can’t wait to see what you’ve planned!” Ana said, her enthusiasm evident.

Lara ended the call with a smile, feeling a sense of accomplishment and anticipation. The thought of spending the day with Ana and Max filled her with joy. She could already imagine the laughter, the smiles, and the possibility of something beautiful unfolding between them.

  Chapter 7

It was the day of the date, and Ana was a mix of nerves, happiness, and full of anticipation. Her bedroom had turned into a battlefield of discarded clothes—dresses draped over the bed, jeans hanging off the chair, and sweaters piled on the floor. She stood in front of her mirror for what felt like the hundredth time, smoothing down the casual dress she had just put on.

"Too formal," she muttered, shaking her head.

She changed into jeans and a blouse, but then frowned. "Too boring."

Finally, she settled on a comfortable yet stylish outfit: dark jeans, a soft beige sweater that complimented her skin tone, and her favorite brown boots that gave her just the right amount of confidence.

"Max, what do you think?" she asked, turning to her loyal companion. Max sat on the floor, tilting his head to one side as if deeply considering her question. His tail wagged slowly, his brown eyes full of affection.

"You’re no help," Ana said with a laugh, though Max’s approval made her feel better.

Finally, the sound of a knock at the door made her stomach flip. She took a deep breath and smoothed her sweater one last time before opening the door.

There she was, leaning casually against the doorframe, and Ana couldn't help but pause to take her in. Lara looked effortlessly stunning, her dark jeans fitting perfectly, paired with a green jacket that brought out the striking hue of her eyes. The simple black shirt beneath added a quiet sophistication to her look, but it was the way she wore it—with a natural ease—that made her captivating. Her hair fell in soft waves, framing her face in a way that seemed almost too perfect to be unintentional, catching the soft light of the evening.

Her green eyes sparkled as they met Ana's, a mix of excitement and warmth that sent a quiet thrill through her. There was something unspoken in her gaze, as if she was letting Ana in on a secret only they would share. And then that smile—a soft, genuine curve of her lips that seemed to melt away the last of Ana’s nerves.

"Hi, Ana," Lara said, her voice soft and inviting. She held out a bouquet of colorful wildflowers. "These are for you. And I didn’t forget Max," she added with a wink, producing a treat from her jacket pocket.

Ana’s heart swelled at the thoughtful gesture. She took the flowers, their sweet scent filling the air, and smiled. "Thank you, Lara. These are beautiful. And Max thanks you too," she added as Max eagerly accepted the treat with a wagging tail.

"You look amazing," Lara said, her eyes lingering on Ana just long enough to make her blush.

"You too," Ana replied, feeling her cheeks grow warmer.

"Ready to go?" Lara asked, gesturing toward her car parked in the driveway.

"Where are we going?" Ana asked as she locked the door behind her.

Lara grinned, a playful glint in her eye. "It’s a surprise. But I’ll give you a hint: you might get a little dirty, so I hope you don’t mind."

Ana laughed softly, intrigued. "You’ve definitely piqued my curiosity."

During the drive, Ana stole glances at Lara, marveling at how natural and at ease she seemed. The quiet hum of the car, mixed with the occasional bark from Max in the backseat, created a cocoon of calm. Ana found herself relaxing, enjoying the simple pleasure of Lara’s company.

When they pulled into the parking lot of a dog shelter, Ana’s eyes lit up with curiosity.

"You volunteer here?" Ana asked as they stepped out of the car.

"Yep," Lara said with a proud smile. "I’ve been coming here for years. It’s one of my favorite places, and I thought you might enjoy it too."

They were greeted by the shelter keeper, a middle-aged man with kind eyes and a warm smile. "Lara! Good to see you. And who’s this?" he asked, nodding toward Ana.

"This is Ana," Lara said, her tone gentle but filled with something that made Ana’s heart skip.

"You must be special," the keeper said, chuckling. "Lara’s never brought anyone here before."

Ana’s cheeks flushed with warmth. "Thank you. I’m looking forward to it."

The keeper smiled knowingly and gestured them inside.

When they entered the playroom, Ana gasped. The room was filled with adorable puppies tumbling over each other, their tiny barks and wagging tails filling the air with joy.

"Can I—?" Ana began, her voice filled with excitement.

"Of course," Lara said, grinning. "They need all the love they can get."

Ana knelt down, laughing as the puppies swarmed her, nipping playfully at her shoelaces and clamoring for her attention. Her laughter was infectious, and Lara found herself watching Ana with a soft smile, feeling her heart swell.

Max, ever the calm observer, sat nearby with a watchful eye, occasionally letting out a bark of approval.

As Ana played with the puppies, she felt Lara’s gaze linger, a heat in her eyes that was impossible to ignore. Their glances weren’t fleeting—they held just a little too long, charged with something that made Ana’s breath hitch. When their hands brushed while reaching for the same squirming puppy, it wasn’t just a touch—it was electric. The brief contact sent a jolt through Ana, her pulse quickening as her fingers grazed Lara’s. For a moment, neither moved, their hands still connected, the air between them thick with a tension that made the world around them fade into the background.

Ana looked up, her breath catching as she met Lara’s gaze. There was something in Lara’s expression—a softness, a quiet admiration—that made Ana’s pulse quicken.

"You’re really good with them," Lara said softly, her voice carrying a note of awe.

"They’re irresistible," Ana replied, her cheeks warming.

Lara chuckled, her hand lingering against Ana’s for a moment before pulling away.

After some time, they began the playful chaos of returning the puppies to their kennel. Max joined in, barking enthusiastically, though his attempts at herding the puppies only added to the hilarity.

"You’re supposed to be helping, Max!" Ana said, laughing as she scooped up a wriggling puppy.

Lara managed to corral two puppies at once and looked over at Ana with a grin. "This might be the most fun I’ve had all week."

"Same," Ana said, her eyes sparkling with joy.

When the last puppy was safely back in the kennel, they stood there, catching their breath and grinning at each other.

"Thanks for bringing me here," Ana said, her voice filled with gratitude.

"I’m glad you liked it," Lara replied. "But we’re not done yet. Ready for part two?"

"Definitely," Ana said, feeling a flutter of anticipation.

As they headed to the car, Ana couldn’t help but feel a sense of warmth and connection growing between them. The day was far from over, but it already felt like one she would never forget.

When they arrived at Lara's apartment, Ana felt a mix of anticipation and curiosity. Lara led the way inside, and Ana was immediately struck by how cozy and inviting the space was. Soft, warm lighting bathed the room, highlighting shelves lined with books and plants. A plush rug covered the hardwood floor, and a couple of framed photos of Lara with animals from her clinic adorned the walls.

"Make yourself at home," Lara said, flashing Ana a warm smile as she headed to the kitchen. "I'll get everything ready."

Ana hesitated for a moment, taking in the details of the space. The apartment seemed to perfectly reflect Lara’s personality—warm, unpretentious, and full of life. She walked into the kitchen, where Lara was pulling ingredients from the fridge. Max padded after Ana, his tail wagging as he curiously sniffed around the unfamiliar space.

"Can I help with anything?" Ana asked, stepping closer.

Lara glanced over her shoulder, her eyes twinkling. "Sure. How about you chop the vegetables while I get the rest of the ingredients?"

Ana nodded, rolling up her sleeves. "You got it."

As they worked side by side, the atmosphere was light and easy. Their conversation flowed naturally, peppered with laughter and little anecdotes about their lives.

"I swear, Max is the ultimate icebreaker," Ana said, glancing at her dog, who had decided to lie in the middle of the kitchen floor, watching them with curiosity. "Every time we go to the park, he somehow gets all the attention—dogs, kids, you name it."

Lara laughed, nudging Max lightly with her foot so she could pass. "Well, he’s got charm, that’s for sure. Must run in the family."

Ana blinked, caught off guard, before a warm flush crept over her cheeks. "You think so?"

"Definitely," Lara said with a sly smile, her gaze lingering on Ana for just a moment longer than necessary.

They continued cooking, their hands occasionally brushing as they reached for the same utensil or passed ingredients. Every touch sent a subtle thrill through Ana, and she couldn’t help but wonder if Lara felt it too.

When they sat down to eat, Ana took a bite and smiled. "This is really good, Lara. You have a talent for cooking."

Lara grinned, clearly pleased. "Thanks, Ana. It’s one of my favorite things to do. So, tell me more about your job. What’s it like being an elementary school teacher?"

Ana’s eyes lit up as she talked about her students. "It’s challenging but incredibly rewarding. The kids are amazing. I love seeing them grow and helping them discover their strengths. It’s exhausting some days, but it’s worth it."

Lara’s expression softened. "That sounds incredible. Kids can be so genuine, just like animals. They don’t put up walls."

"Exactly," Ana said, nodding. "What about you? What’s it like working with animals every day?"

Lara leaned back in her chair, her smile becoming more reflective. "It’s fulfilling. Animals are so honest in their needs. They just want love and care, and they give so much back. It’s hard work, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything."

They talked some more, laughter mingling with shared stories that seemed to make the time slip away. Ana found herself hanging on to every word Lara said—the way her green eyes lit up when she laughed, how her lips curved just so when she smiled.

Even as they talked, Ana’s mind kept wandering, her focus slipping away from the conversation and settling instead on the way Lara's mouth moved when she spoke. She imagined leaning in, closing the space between them, and tasting the warmth of that smile. The thought sent a shiver through her, and she tried to shake it off, but the pull was undeniable and powerful.

After they finished eating and cleared the plates, Lara turned to Ana with a warm smile, her hand resting lightly on the edge of the table, as if she was about to say something. Ana barely heard her words over the thrum of anticipation coursing through her. The subtle tension between them was electric, and Ana felt like all she could do was hold her breath, wondering if Lara felt it too.

"How about we go out to the back balcony? There’s something I want to show you."

Ana’s curiosity was piqued. "Sure, lead the way."

When they stepped onto the balcony, Ana gasped. "Oh, wow. What a view!"

The city lights stretched out before them, twinkling like stars. Lara had set up a cozy corner with a small sofa and fairy lights strung along the railing. Max trotted over to investigate the new setting before settling down near Ana’s feet.

"This is amazing," Ana said, sitting down on the sofa.

Lara joined her, their shoulders brushing lightly. "I like to come out here to unwind. It’s peaceful."

Ana turned to Lara, their faces so close that she could feel the warmth radiating between them, the tension crackling like static in the cool night air. “It’s beautiful. Thanks for sharing it with me. I... I can’t seem to take my eyes off you,” she admitted, her voice trembling with honesty.
