But maybe Sarah was right. Maybe it was time to give new things a chance, even if her heart wasn’t fully convinced yet.

  ***

Friday arrived, and Ana began preparing for her dinner with David. Standing in front of her closet, she glanced at Max, who lay on his bed, watching her intently.

"You know, Max, fancy restaurants aren't really my thing," Ana sighed. "I'd rather go somewhere simple, maybe even take you along."

Max wagged his tail, his eyes full of understanding.

"But tonight's different," Ana continued, pulling out a dress she saved for special occasions. "I guess I should make an effort."

She chose a beautiful navy blue dress that complemented her fair complexion and highlighted her blue eyes. The dress had a flattering A-line silhouette with delicate lace detailing on the sleeves and neckline. Ana paired it with a simple silver necklace and matching earrings, adding a touch of elegance without being too flashy.

As she slipped into the dress, Ana admired how it accentuated her figure. She decided to wear her hair down, letting her golden blonde waves cascade over her shoulders. A light touch of makeup—just enough to enhance her natural beauty—completed the look.

"How do I look, Max?" Ana asked, turning to face her loyal companion.

Max wagged his tail and gave a soft bark, as if to say, "You look great!"

Ana smiled, feeling a bit more confident. "Thanks, buddy. I hope tonight goes well."

She took a deep breath, grabbed her purse, and gave Max one last pat before heading out. "Be good, Max. I'll be back soon."

David arrived right on time, looking every bit the perfect gentleman. He was dressed in a sharp suit and carried a bouquet of flowers. "Hi, Ana. These are for you," he said, handing her the flowers with a warm smile.

"Thank you, David. They're beautiful," Ana replied, feeling a bit flustered by his thoughtfulness.

"You look stunning," David said, his eyes admiring her dress.

"Thank you. You look great too," Ana said, feeling a blush rise to her cheeks.

"Shall we?" David offered his arm.

Ana nodded and took his arm, feeling a bit more at ease as they walked to his car. The drive to the restaurant was pleasant, with David making polite conversation about their day and the upcoming weekend.

When they arrived at La Belle Époque, Ana was impressed by the elegant ambiance. The soft lighting, tasteful decor, and soothing background music created a warm and inviting atmosphere. However, as they were seated and handed the menus, Ana couldn't help but feel a bit uncomfortable. The prices were steep, and she wasn't used to spending so much on food and drinks. On her teacher's salary, it was more than she could afford, and she felt uneasy about how she might have to repay David for the date, one way or another. His display of wealth made her uncomfortable.

David seemed perfectly at ease, ordering a bottle of expensive wine without hesitation. "This place is known for its exquisite cuisine," he said, smiling. "I think you'll love it."

Ana forced a smile, trying to hide her discomfort. "It certainly looks lovely."

As they began their meal, the conversation flowed, but it felt somewhat shallow and forced. They talked about their jobs, recent movies, and travel destinations, but Ana struggled to find deeper topics. She often felt like she wasn't quite saying what she wanted to, and the conversation lacked the natural ease she had hoped for.

"So, Ana, do you have any plans for the future?" David asked, taking a sip of his wine.

Ana hesitated. "Well, I love my job as a teacher, and I hope to continue making a difference in my students' lives. Beyond that, I'm not entirely sure."

David nodded thoughtfully. "I understand. For me, I have clear goals. I want a family, kids, and a stable home. I wouldn't mind if my wife decided to stay at home and take care of the children. I make enough money to support that lifestyle."

Ana felt a bit taken aback by his traditional views. "That's... nice," she said, trying to keep her tone neutral.

David continued, "I know what I want, and as time is passing quickly, I'm not interested in one-night stands or casual flings. I'm looking for something serious and long-term."

Ana nodded, feeling a bit overwhelmed. She appreciated his honesty, but she wasn't sure if their visions for the future aligned. As the evening went on, she couldn't shake the feeling that she was out of her element. Starting to feel a bit suffocated with the idea of being with David.

When the dinner finally came to an end, Ana felt a mix of relief and uncertainty. David had been polite and charming, but she couldn't ignore the nagging feeling that something was missing.

"Thank you for a lovely evening, David," Ana said as they stood outside the restaurant.

"You're welcome, Ana. I had a great time," David replied, smiling. "Let's do this again sometime."

"Sure," Ana said, though she wasn't entirely sure if she meant it.

As David drove her home, Ana's thoughts drifted back to Lara. She couldn't help but compare the two experiences, realizing Lara was something she couldn't easily forget. Completely different, and easy to talk to, she could see herself being with her, and just talking, unlike with David, where she started to watch what she was saying or how she was acting. As they neared her house, Ana wondered if David would kiss her. She decided she wouldn't ask him in for coffee or a drink, letting the moment unfold naturally.

When they arrived, David walked her to the door and, being the perfect gentleman, gave her a soft kiss on the lips. It was a small kiss, but Ana didn't feel much of anything.

"Thank you for a lovely evening, Ana," David said, smiling warmly. "Can we do this again sometime?"

Ana hesitated for a moment, then said, "We'll see. Call me." She didn't say no, but she didn't say yes either.

  ***

When Ana finally got home, Max greeted her with his usual enthusiasm, his tail wagging so hard it seemed like it might fly off. Ana knelt down and hugged him tightly, burying her face in his soft fur. "Hey, buddy. I had an... interesting evening," she said, her voice muffled.

Max responded by licking her face, his warm, slobbery kisses making her laugh despite herself. "Okay, okay, I missed you too," she said, pulling back and scratching behind his ears. "I guess I’ll just have to take it one day at a time, huh?"

Max shifted from paw to paw, his impatient whine breaking the moment. Ana chuckled. "You gotta go out, buddy? Alright, let me grab my comfy shoes, and we’ll go for a quick walk."

She slipped off her heels and into her running shoes, still wearing the elegant navy blue dress from her dinner with David. The contrast made her smile—fancy dress, practical shoes. As they stepped outside, the cool night air brushed against her skin, refreshing and calming. Max trotted happily beside her, his leash slack as they wandered down the quiet streets.

As they turned a corner, Ana spotted a familiar figure walking toward them. Her breath hitched. It was Lara, dressed casually in jeans and a hoodie, her hands tucked into her pockets. Lara’s eyes widened as she took in Ana’s appearance—her dress hugging her figure just right, the lace catching the soft glow of the streetlights, her golden hair loose and catching the light. For a moment, Lara just stared, her gaze lingering on Ana with a mix of surprise and something deeper, something that made Ana’s stomach flutter.

There was a spark between them, a quiet but undeniable pull that neither could ignore. Ana felt her cheeks warm under Lara’s steady gaze, her heart skipping a beat. Lara looked at her like she was something special, like she couldn’t quite look away.

To Ana, Lara looked striking, effortlessly beautiful in a way that made her chest tighten. The air between them felt charged, like something unspoken was hanging there, waiting. For a few seconds, it was just the two of them, the rest of the world fading into the background. It wasn’t just attraction—it was something more, something real and impossible to ignore.

Ana felt a rush of warmth spread through her, a mix of excitement and nervousness that made her fingers tingle. She couldn’t help but notice the way Lara’s lips parted slightly, as if she were about to say something but couldn’t find the words. There was a softness in Lara’s expression, a vulnerability that made Ana’s heart ache in the best way.

For a moment, it felt like they were the only two people in the world, connected by an invisible thread that pulled them closer together. Ana wanted to reach out, to close the distance between them, but she held back, unsure if Lara felt the same way.

"Ana?" Lara called, her voice soft but carrying through the quiet night.

"Lara! Hi," Ana replied, her heart skipping a beat. She stopped, Max sitting obediently at her side, though his tail was wagging furiously. "What are you doing here?"

"I just got off work," Lara said, stopping a few feet away. Her eyes didn’t leave Ana’s, and there was a warmth in them that made Ana’s cheeks flush. "I decided to walk home to clear my head. You look... wow. Stunning."

Ana glanced down at herself, suddenly self-conscious. "Oh, thanks. I, uh, just got back from dinner."

Lara’s lips curved into a small smile, though there was a flicker of something else in her expression—curiosity, maybe even a hint of jealousy. "Dinner, huh? How was it?"

"It was... interesting," Ana said carefully, her tone light but guarded. She paused, then gestured to the sidewalk ahead. "Would you like to join us on our walk?"

Lara hesitated, her gaze dropping to Max, who was already wagging his tail so hard his entire body was wiggling. After a moment, she nodded. “Sure, I’d like that.” She looked at Max, who couldn’t hold it together any longer and immediately trotted over to Lara, nudging her hand with his wet nose. Lara laughed, the sound warm and melodic, and knelt down to scratch behind his ears. “Hey, Max. Good to see you too, buddy. Who’s a good boy? Huh? You are.”

Ana watched the interaction, a warmth spreading through her chest. “He’s such a traitor,” she said with mock indignation, crossing her arms. “Apparently, I’m not giving him enough love at home.”

The way Lara smiled at Max, her fingers gently ruffling his fur, made Ana’s heart swell. There was something so genuine about Lara’s affection, something that made Ana feel like she was seeing a side of her that not everyone got to see. It was in the way Lara’s eyes softened, the way her voice dropped to a playful, tender tone when she spoke to Max.

Ana couldn’t help but smile, her arms uncrossing as she watched them. “You’ve officially won him over,” she said, her voice teasing but warm. “Now I’m going to have to fight him for your attention.”

Lara glanced up at her, a playful glint in her eyes. “Well, he’s tough competition. I mean, look at that face.”

Lara straightened, still smiling as Max leaned happily into her touch. “I think he just has a lot of love to give,” she said, her eyes meeting Ana’s. “Don’t you, Max?” She ruffled his fur one last time before standing, her hand brushing Ana’s arm as she did. The touch was fleeting, but it sent a shiver through Ana, a spark that seared itself into her skin, burning even after she broke contact..

As they began walking, the initial awkwardness between them gave way to easy conversation. They talked about their days, sharing anecdotes that made them both laugh. Lara’s laughter was infectious, and Ana found herself smiling more than she had in weeks. There was a lightness to the way Lara spoke, a warmth in her tone that made Ana feel like she was exactly where she was meant to be.

"So," Ana asked as they turned down another quiet street, "how was the clinic today?"

Lara shrugged, her smile tinged with weariness. "Busy, as always. We had a few emergency cases—one dog swallowed a sock, believe it or not—but everything turned out fine."

"That’s impressive," Ana said, her tone full of admiration. "I don’t know how you do it. I’d be a nervous wreck all the time."

"You’d be surprised," Lara replied, her voice softening. "It’s chaotic, but there’s something satisfying about helping animals. It makes the stress worth it."

Ana nodded, her gaze drifting to Lara’s profile. "I feel the same way about teaching. It can be exhausting, but then a student says or does something that reminds you why you love it."

Lara’s eyes met hers, and for a moment, they just looked at each other. “I can see that,” Lara said quietly. “You’ve always been so passionate about everything you do.”

Their conversation shifted to lighter topics—favorite books, places they wanted to travel, funny stories about Max. As they walked, their hands brushed lightly against each other. The touch was accidental, but it sent a jolt through Ana. She glanced at Lara and saw that she had noticed too.

"Sorry," Lara said softly, her voice tinged with something Ana couldn’t quite place.

"It’s okay," Ana replied, her heart racing. She didn’t pull her hand away, and neither did Lara.

For a moment, neither of them spoke, but the silence wasn’t uncomfortable. It felt charged, as though words weren’t necessary. Max trotted ahead, sniffing at a patch of grass, blissfully unaware of the tension between the two women.

When they finally reached the end of the block, Ana stopped, reluctant to say goodbye. "Thanks for joining us," she said, her voice soft. "It was nice to see you."

"It was nice to see you too," Lara replied, her gaze lingering on Ana’s face. "Maybe we can do this again sometime?"

"I’d like that," Ana said, smiling.

As Lara turned and walked away, Max tugged gently on the leash, his eyes following her as if he wanted to join her. Ana laughed softly, pulling him back. "Me too, Max. Me too... but we have to go home."

She watched Lara’s retreating figure until she disappeared around the corner, her mind swirling with emotions she couldn’t quite name. For the first time in weeks, she felt a flicker of hope.

  ***

The house was alive with laughter, the warm scent of roasted chicken and freshly baked bread wafting through the air. Balloons and streamers decorated the living room, and the dining table was crowded with dishes for Aunt Clara’s birthday celebration. Ana stood in the kitchen, helping her mum arrange the last of the appetizers, while the rest of the family mingled in the living room.

David had arrived earlier, looking polished and confident in a crisp button-down shirt. He’d brought a bottle of wine for the occasion, which Ana’s mum had accepted with a delighted smile. Now, he was leaning against the counter, his eyes following Ana as she moved around the kitchen.

“Need any help?” David asked, his tone casual but his gaze lingering on her a little too long.

Ana forced a smile, her stomach tightening. “Oh, no, I think we’ve got it covered. Thanks, though.”

David didn’t take the hint. Instead, he stepped closer, his voice dropping slightly. “You look great, by the way. That dress really suits you.”

Ana’s cheeks flushed, more from discomfort than flattery. “Thanks,” she said quickly, glancing toward the living room. “I should probably check on Max. He’s been a little too quiet.”

She slipped past David, her heart racing as she made her way to the living room. Max was sprawled on the rug, happily gnawing on a chew toy, oblivious to the chaos around him. Ana crouched down to pet him, grateful for the distraction.

From across the room, she caught her mum’s eye. Her mum was beaming, her gaze flicking between Ana and David with a look of quiet approval. Ana’s stomach sank. Her mum had always been fond of David, and it was clear she was already imagining him as part of the family.

“David’s such a nice young man,” her mum said later, as they stood side by side at the sink, washing dishes. “He’s so polite, and he seems to really care about you.”

Ana nodded, her hands submerged in soapy water. “Yeah, he’s… nice.”

Her mum gave her a knowing look. “Nice? That’s all you have to say? Ana, he’s perfect for you. Stable, kind, successful… and he adores you. What more could you want?”

Ana bit her lip, her mind racing. She wanted to say something, to explain that David wasn’t the one, but the words stuck in her throat. Instead, she just nodded again. “I know, Mum. He’s great.”

Her mum patted her arm, her smile warm. “Just give him a chance, sweetheart. Sometimes the best things take a little time.”

Ana forced a smile, but her chest felt heavy. She needed a moment to breathe, to think.

Later, as the party wound down, Ana finally found Aunt Clara alone in the sunroom, sipping a cup of tea and gazing out at the garden. Ana hesitated in the doorway before stepping inside.

“Hey, Aunt Clara,” she said softly. “Mind if I join you?”

Clara looked up, her eyes crinkling with a warm smile. “Of course not, sweetheart. Come sit.”

Ana sank into the chair beside her, her hands twisting in her lap. For a moment, she just sat there, the silence between them comfortable and familiar.

“Something on your mind?” Clara asked, her tone gentle.

Ana sighed, her shoulders slumping. “It’s David. He’s… nice. Really nice. But I don’t think he’s for me.”

Clara raised an eyebrow, setting her teacup down. “What makes you say that?”

“I don’t know,” Ana admitted. “He’s confident, kind, everything my mum says I should want. But when I’m with him, it feels… forced. Like I’m trying to be someone I’m not.”

Clara nodded slowly, her expression thoughtful. “Sounds familiar,” she said, her voice tinged with amusement.

Ana frowned. “What do you mean?”

Clara leaned back in her chair, her gaze steady. “You’re doing the same thing you did with Mark. Trying to fit into someone else’s idea of what you should be. But Ana, you’re not a puzzle piece. You don’t have to force yourself into a shape that doesn’t fit.”

Ana blinked, her chest tightening. “But Mum loves him. And he’s… safe.”

“Safe isn’t always enough,” Clara said firmly. “You deserve more than safe. You deserve someone who makes you feel alive, someone who sees you for who you are and loves you for it. Don’t settle for less just because it’s easy.”
