The Alpha By Her Side, page 18
“Trust me.” Gabriel said it in her ear and that was when she knew that there was a lot more play. He would fill her in more when they could settle down. They knew that this would take a while before they could really rest for the night, though they both had been for the past few months gearing up for this encounter.
Chapter 51
Desiree didn’t like the idea of being kept in the dark on anything. She also understood that the surprise that had to happen had to be real. This wasn’t something that either one of them could fake. There was too much at stake as far as she was concerned and also where he was concerned. They both had a common goal, and they were both going to work towards it. They had already talked about it numerous times and what they actually wanted to accomplish with the time that they were going to be rulers. They also realized that there should be some sort of limit that they could actually be rulers as well. By the time of their son was old enough to take over when he was the same age as Gabriel, for example, it would be good for them to have some kind of ceremony and turn over to them. But at that point, they still hadn’t quite decided if they actually wanted it to be through a bloodline or if they wanted to continue just to see who was the readiest to be able to take over. What they wanted to do was set up a system that wasn’t going to be like anything they had already had. A monarchy was not the way to go.
That led to too much hostility between the different families in even though different families needed to marry within each other to keep the bloodlines pure. At the exact same time, it was one of those situations where they realized it was very much like racism or sectionalism. There was no reason for the bloodline to remain pure as long as it remained werewolf and even, in that case, let’s say their son fell in love with a human. They would be more than happy to accept that. It was time for a change. There needed to be a lot of different changes made, but they also knew that they couldn’t make them right off the bat. They had to work into everything.
Things had to happen slowly, otherwise people were not going to accept them. Most of the people that were surrounding them right now were the type of people that needed to have the idea that they were special just because of their bloodlines. It had been ingrained in them, so they were going to have to deal with the fact little girl who was from the same bloodlines as them who had not lived amongst them at all, but had been given in a blood ceremony to their actual leader who had just given her the leadership who is now in charge. That was going to take time as well. One thing that they had learned was time was of an essence and no matter what they did, it would either slip away or it could be stopped at any given moment. The one thing that Gabriel was counting on was the simple fact that people would be more intrigued by her than they would be overwhelmed by anything that he had come up with. They both agreed that the whole system needed to change for them to be able to continue as a society. But they also wanted to be members of the global society and they needed to open up to allow that to happen. It wasn’t going to be simple when it wasn’t going to be one of those things that they were going to be able to accomplish right away. There was going to be a lot of work involved. A lot of people were going to have to change the way that they did things and change is something that always caused resistance. However, he wasn’t going to force whatever was going to happen through fighting any longer. He wanted to abolish that ability to have any of that happen. But he technically couldn’t. She could, though. She had lived in places where it was completely necessary to fight for your life in many ways and she could explain why having simple arena fights for the sake of just showing who was stronger was not exactly the way that they needed to continue as society.
They needed to grow and, in a way; they needed the humans as well. They knew that the humans were actually pretty much the purebloods, and they were the mutation. Most of them actually knew how werewolf came to be in the first place and it wasn’t some myth but an experiment. One of the first experiments and the werewolf had separated completely from their actual human side for quite a long time, until they were able to tame that. Desiree seemed to be more human than she was a werewolf and that was one of the things that Gabriel had fallen in love with her for. Because she was able to actually embrace that side of herself that he was never able to even develop. Even though he most likely was that type of person, anyway. He didn’t really need to have any kind of validation when he had transformed. He even knew of other werewolves that didn’t need to transform to be able to fight the way that they would in their normal state. That was one of the things that he would always strive for in the first place to actually get an education so he could change the world from within. There was no need for most of the fighting that happened in the group at all. There were quite a few things that didn’t need to happen anymore. There were things that were ceremony that didn’t need to happen anymore as well, including the blood ceremony. The blood ceremony itself needed to be a choice between two people and not the two families of those people. One of the first things that she was going to do was abolish that for children.
There was no reason for children to be sectioned off that way. That way, if the other, for some strange reason, didn’t make it to adulthood, they would be left completely alone and without a mate forever. That was something that was almost inhumane, and she wasn’t going to allow it to continue. She was grateful for the ceremony for herself and for Gabriel, but at the exact same time, she would have fallen in love with him, anyway. He would have fallen in love with her as well.
Chapter 52
To Desiree, this was still completely brand new, and she almost still didn’t believe the fact that she was who she was. She was always born to be a leader and most of the people that were there understood that completely. However, she didn’t actually seem to care. She was flashing back to the time that she was at any one of the packs that were there to take her in the house, and she had been completely rejected. She learned how to deal with everything on her own, and she was still trying to figure everything out as she continued on that path for herself. She didn’t really understand how these people could actually just accept her just because Gabriel said that she was okay. It was one of those situations where she was kind of lost in her own head as she was trying to figure out exactly how this all happened. She knew exactly how it happened, but at the same time, it was one of those situations where she was just trying to figure out what to do next and how to act. She was now thrust into the spotlight of all of their kind as their new leader. She didn’t even know how that was going to take place like other people would know instantly that she was the new queen. Not even just the queen. She was the alpha, which was one of those situations that nobody had actually ever heard of because no woman had ever taken the role before. This was not going to be something that was extremely easy for her to do and in her condition, she really didn’t want the extra stress. She also knew that Gabriel would be right by her side, but that didn’t really matter to her at the moment. Both of them would work together as a team to accomplish exactly what they wanted to. They had already talked about this many times and they both knew that they were on the same page with everything when it came to when they had to take over. The simple fact that she was now the ruler, and he was the one who was in her spot, was something of a role reversal had never actually taken thought before of how this was going to work. She knew that she had a lot of issues that she needed to overcome, including the rejection of all the packs that she had lived with.
That was a major factor that nobody actually understood. The way that the other people had actually treated her for most of her life was one of the most outstanding things that she could think about. She still couldn’t get over all the pain that she actually had to go through as a young person trying to figure out exactly how to move forward with her life. The rejection that she had encountered throughout her entire life was a major factor where she didn’t want to actually learn to trust anybody, but she knew that she had let Gabriel in. She had to. It was literally written in her blood, but they didn’t actually have to get along as much as they did, which was one of those blessings in disguise for her. She was grateful that he was there. She looked down at her growing abdomen and she knew that she had to make the decisions that were going to change the way that things were done for the kind in the generations that were to come. It didn’t really matter to her if her son became the next alpha or if one of her daughters did. This was going to be something that she would do just for her children. She already knew that they were going to have quite a few and though the others had let her see in the timeline and what was going to happen, they’d never actually let her see the end of it at least her spot in the end of it. That was their way of making sure that it was not completely influencing her as well.
She could see they lived a long happy life together though she never actually saw her becoming the alpha that didn’t mean that it wasn’t part of it just the context was not there because she couldn’t exactly see what was going on and unless she went into that specific timeline. Most of the time, she would just look at the external. It was almost like watching a movie of sorts. You could see everything, but you couldn’t actually hear it. When you went into the timeline, you could actually watch and be a part of it. Even though you weren’t actually there, it was almost like an interactive virtual reality that she had heard of before. She wasn’t the type that would actually try any video games or any of those entertainment spots in local shopping malls or whatever she tried to stay away from people as much as possible though she did enjoy interacting with some of the humans it wasn’t encouraged at all. Most of the time the packs stayed together, and they often have their own schools and teachers and basically all things werewolf. She was kept within the pack even though she was basically rejected from every person that was there. Everybody looked down upon her and she wanted to make sure that she somehow made sure that every single one of those parents knew that she was the one who was the next ruler of their kind. Though she wasn’t exactly a petty person at the exact same time as she wanted to be. She wanted her own vengeance of different kinds, but at the exact same time she wanted to bridge a gap between everybody that existed amongst their species. It was nothing more than an experiment gone wrong centuries ago that created their kind and now, with the way that the future was headed; she wanted to make absolutely sure that their kind would continue more united than before.
Chapter 53
The idea of their werewolf kind actually coming together for any period of time with something that nobody had actually ever tried before. Sometimes they have thought of it, and they have brought it up in many council meetings, but the simple fact was that nobody had actually ever thought that they could get all the different factions together. Let alone stop fighting with each other. To the people on the island, it was almost impossible to even remotely understand how the different packs worked on different places. The first thing that Desi wanted to do after a week of being the ruler was bringing some of the people from different areas together and try to talk about things that she wanted to do for them. When she had explained to the royal families that she believed that they should relinquish some of the power that they had to more local areas and the alphas in those areas could actually do allow the punishments and give advice for the area that they were in. That way, they didn’t have to try to learn different cultures and different ways of being to decide a punishment that probably would not fit the person or area. She understood that there were so many factors in the way that people did things that it would cause a huge issue if all of the rulings came from the island which had no real understanding of the people or the places that they came from. Something that might not make sense in Asia would make perfect sense in America and vice versa. There was also Europe and Africa as well. There was no place in the world that their kind had not touched, but instead of staying on top of actually knowing the areas that different places and people lived along with the different cultures and the meanings of things, the people on the island had grown stale. They had grown very comfortable in the fact that they were the ultimate rulers and whatever they said had to be done. No matter if it was against their culture or not. Desi knew that things were completely different and so did Gabriel in the different places that they kind of lived. She also wanted to make absolutely sure that everybody was counted. That meant even the orphans that were left behind like herself. That was something that had touched every single one of them as they realized that what she had gone through was actually more powerful than anything they could have actually done during the war period. The rejection and hatred that was done for so many different things that they blamed her for even though it was not her fault, as she was just a child, created the way that she was.
“Do you actually think that they can rule themselves?” one of the council members asked is they were implying that the people that lived anywhere else but the island were too dumb to actually care about the simple laws that would be set forward that they would follow and also enforce.
“Do you not believe that they can actually rule themselves?” Desiree asked if she looked at the person with an extremely hostile look. It was the only time she actually ever questioned anyone that was there and had been there for a very long time. She didn’t exactly feel comfortable with the idea that quite a few of these people actually had probably taken part somehow in the way that her parents had died. She tried not to hold everything against these people, but at the exact same time, when they continued with their stuffy self-important talk, it was extremely hard for her not to.
“I was just saying some of these creatures could be more savage than they are civilized.” the council member said is they looked at her and realized that she had actually turned a little bit into something that they hadn’t expected from her. Gabriel was sitting next to her and, though he was actually just taking everything in, he was starting to chuckle a little bit enough to the point where his shoulders were moving slightly. They had actually already talked about this and had agreed that most of the people on the island were going to have a problem with the idea of giving up some of their power to the locals.
“I understand exactly what you’re saying. I don’t think that you understand what I’m saying. The local alphas are the ones that can understand all the customs of the area that they are in. It’s not like a small area like this where everybody shares pretty much the same ideas. We’re talking about a worldwide network here. That means that we’re dealing with hundreds of different countries and millions of different costumes in different areas. For the most part, we want our people to be able to assimilate with the humans as if they actually were. That way, they can do whatever they need to do to make sure that they have money and food and everything else that they need. Though when somebody gets out of line, we cannot be the last line of defense or even the first one. That needs to be something local for every person who understands the concepts of that particular area. I don’t think I’m speaking any different here than I would be anywhere else. What I’m saying is that we have the local power there in multiple forms. Different pack leaders have the ability to make decisions. And then have a guard or so like a judge that would be there to make a ruling in favor of the alpha or not. And if it was necessary, they could contest it again and then bring it here period to be perfectly honest to have multiple checks and balances is the only way that will be able to actually enforce anything because we don’t exactly know every culture or every difference that there is in the entire world. Some things that would be a big deal here wouldn’t be a big deal somewhere else, and vice versa. Where we don’t exactly understand all the differences that make our kind so unique, even amongst their own regions. That is why we have to do it and that is why we are going to do that. And in the meantime, I’m going to meet with whoever I need to meet with to make sure that we can do this properly. That is, of course, unless you and the other council members who sit on this board wish to learn all of the customs and laws of every country to place our kind lives.”
Chapter 54
During the week, the two of them had decided that they were not going to stay in the castle. For Gabriel, it was just too hard to understand how his family could actually turn the way that they had, and the castle was a constant reminder of that. For Desiree, it was pretty much the same. She didn’t want to have anything to do with the castle or any of the people that were in their period. They all had a part of her parent’s death and the beginning of the war that had changed their lives forever.
Instead, the two had stayed in the cottage they had originally stayed in when they first got to the island. At least when Desiree had gotten to the island. It was a safe place for them. They also knew that there the others would be able to reach them if they had to in that particular cabin and not the castle. They have been warned that certain talisman had been left around the castle that meant that they wouldn’t be able to enter or even get close to. Desiree set out to try to find them, to remove them, but she still couldn’t at the moment. She had been so overloaded with things that they needed to do just to keep up with the workload that had been there. They had done undone a lot of things that they were finding that the web of deceit that Gabriel’s parents had left behind was something that she wasn’t ever going to enjoy having to do. Piece by piece, they tried to dismantle anything that his parents had in the works by calling out everything that they could possibly call out that they have learned while watching the timelines. They both knew that there were going to be other plots and different things happening always in play because he knew that his parents were the type to plan seven steps ahead. He just needed to find out how to catch up to the way that they were thinking of a lot of things. There was no way for him to actually know what was going on, though. It was actually scary for him to figure out that there were things that he didn’t understand about his own family. Apparently, he found a diary that he had read and it was actually his grandmother’s. All of this was her idea, not his mother’s, which he was actually surprised. It was her mother who was a cousin to Desiree’s grandmother. That was the connection between their two mothers that he had actually never actually knew completely. He knew that they had grown up together. He knew that they were close at one point. His mother often called her soul sister instead of a cousin, but he knew that it was some kind of distant cousin relationship that they had.
