“A little liquid courage before we crash the party?” Eric asks.

I raise a brow. “I thought that we were going to keep our distance?” I reply, knowing that we all knew from the moment we laid eyes on them we were not going to leave here without at least talking to them.

“That plan went out of the window the moment my gorgeous wife spotted us,” Mika says as he nods his head towards the booth.

I turn my gaze toward the women and my eyes meet the enchanting dark irises that consume so many of my thoughts. She smiles and I can’t deny that I am a little relieved. I wasn’t too sure she wouldn’t be mad at us for crashing Mickey’s party. My feet are carrying me toward her before I even consciously decide to walk over there. She rises from the booth before I am halfway there and heads towards me. Neither of us looks away. It almost feels like a magnetic pull and I don’t understand it, but don’t mind it either.

“You look amazing in that dress,” I tell her as she reaches me.

The corners of her mouth curl up. “Flattery will get you a lot of things, River. But I’m not sure it’ll get you out of facing my wrath.”

“I’ll face anything you want to throw at me. I guarantee you right now that it’s totally worth it.”

“You might regret that statement,” she replies with a smirk.

My hand finds its way to her waist and I pull her against me. My index trails across her cheek.

“Bring it on, Goddess,” I tell her before I lean down to brush my lips against hers.

Too soon and reluctantly I pull back.

“I know that you have more plans with the girls tonight, but I was hoping you’d consider my request?”

She wrinkles her brow. And she looks adorable.

  “What request?”

  “Didn’t you see my text?”

“Oh crap, no I have not. Eddie told me to check my phone, but you walked in before I got the chance,” she says sheepishly.

“I was just hoping to meet up later tonight. I might have arranged a little surprise if you’re up for it.”

“A surprise? Sounds like an interesting offer.”

I kiss the tip of her nose. “Does it sound like an offer you can’t refuse?”

  She laughs. “It definitely does.”

“I will send the details to your phone. Let me know when you’re ready.”

I lean in and kiss her briefly before releasing her. She smiles sweetly before she turns and starts making her way back to the girls.

“See you later, handsome,” she calls over her shoulder.

I watch her as she walks away and I cannot stop smiling. I can’t wait to see her face tonight when she sees what I have in store for her.

  Phoenix

After the guys leave, we hit a few more places and have a blast. Although it is only eleven, we decide to head back to the hotel and meet the guys for a nightcap. Spirits are high when we all pile into the waiting limo.

“I can’t believe the guys showed up here,” Hannah says shaking her head.

“You can’t?” Rae replies with a chuckle. “I’m surprised it took them that long.”

“Yup I’m with Raeva on this one. And I’m one hundred percent certain that our brother talked them all into it,” Mikaela adds with a smirk.

“I’m pretty sure none of them had to have their arm twisted,” Mackenzie says as she rolls her eyes.

“Girl time was fun and sorely needed, but I can’t deny a little part of me wasn’t thrilled to see Ben,” Jill gushes.

“I think that if we are all honest here, we are all more than a little happy that they showed up,” I reply.

“I guess we are just as bad as the guys,” Mackenzie says laughing.

The traffic is horrendous, even at this hour, and it takes us a bit to get back to the hotel. We head straight to the bar where all the guys are waiting. It only takes me two seconds to notice that River isn’t with them.

“Where is River?” I ask Mika.

He chuckles. “Well hello to you too, big sis.”

“I’m sorry. Hello little brother. Where is my guy?”

Mika hands me a white envelope with a big smirk. I take it and extract the note inside. All it says is to head to the lobby and meet Eddie.

“Why am I meeting Eddie in the lobby?” I ask, admittedly a little confused.

“Go meet him and find out,” Mika replies teasingly. “Sean will escort you,” he adds as he gestures at his head of security.

“It’ll be my pleasure Ms. Kingsley,” he says with a pleasant smile.

Sean gestures at me to start leading the way and I oblige. My pace increases when Eddie comes into view. He stands by the entrance, stoic and expressionless as ever. I thank Sean and he heads back to the bar.

“So, I guess you’re going to take me to River then?” I ask.

  “Yes, ma’am. Please follow me.”

He turns and starts the walk outside where a sleek black town car is waiting. Eddie opens the door and I slide into the car as gracefully as I can manage in the gown. I want to ask where we are going, but I already know the man is as tight-lipped as a vault. Luckily, the drive is short. We arrive at our destination seventeen silent minutes later. River is standing at the curb and opens the door. He holds out his hand and it feels like there are thousands of butterflies swarming deep inside my belly as I take it.

“Hey there,” he says, flashing those dimples.

“Hey there, yourself,” I manage to croak.

“Have I told you how beautiful you look in that gown?”

I lean in and whisper. “I bet you’ll like what is under here even more.”

“I can’t wait to see if that’s true,” he replies with a wink. “But first, I need you to turn around.”

  “Turn around? Why?”

He holds up a red silk scarf.

“Because, before we head inside, I have to put this on you,” he tells me as he wiggles his eyebrows.

  “You’re going to blindfold me?”

  “I am.”

  “Well, color me intrigued.”

I turn around and allow him to put the scarf over my eyes. My heart rate spikes as he leads me into the building.

“Are you ready?” he whispers into my ear as we come to a halt.

I bite my lip and nod. River tugs at the blindfold to remove it. My eyes flutter open and I gasp as I look at everything he’s done here. We are in a large studio and from the looks of things, River has been busy. The space looks amazing. In the center of the room is a large four-poster bed, and the entire space is filled with so many candles, it looks like a stunning ocean of lights. On both sides of the massive bed are small tables, a large vase filled with long-stemmed white roses on each of them.

“Oh my God, River. This is stunning,” I gush.

He smiles and pulls me further into the room. Since his eyes are glued to mine, he walks backwards as he leads me to the bed. When we reach the bed, I notice rose petals cover the entire bed.

“How did you manage to arrange all this?”

“I have my ways,” he says mysteriously.

“I see you have big plans, Mr. Ray,” I say, as I nod towards the bed.

He pulls me against him and kisses my throat.

“Oh Goddess, you have no idea,” he breathes huskily against my neck. “And you’re a little overdressed for what I have in mind.”

A small cry escapes from my lips as he swiftly turns me around, anchoring me with one hand flat on my belly and using the other to tug at the zipper of my dress. The dress slides down my hips and pools around my feet. River makes a humming sound of approval as he sees the lacy white lingerie that was hiding under the wedding dress. He spins me around again and lets his gaze feast on the sight before him.

“I love this color on you, PK. It looks positively sinful on that amazing body of yours.” He nearly growls.

River lifts me up and gently lays me on the bed. He softly presses a kiss on my lips before he pulls back. He reaches down and removes my boots.

“Do you trust me?” he asks hoarsely.

I answer without hesitation. “Of course, I do. I trust you with my life.”

“Good,” he tells me as he takes my right hand and places it above my head. He pulls the red scarf from earlier out of his pocket and wraps it around my wrist. He looks at me and raises a brow. I bite my lip and nod my head, giving my approval. I trust him; besides, it isn’t the first time he has tied me up. I love when he gets all kinky on me. He ties my arm above my head. He pulls another scarf from his pocket and then moves to the left side to tie the other one too. Then he steps back and admires his handiwork.

“You look fucking stunning like this. And it’s almost perfect.”

He moves to one of the small tables and my gaze follows him. He picks up a purple silk eye mask and dangles it on his index finger as he leisurely strolls towards me. Without prompting, I raise my head, so he can slide the mask over my eyes. I lay back down and wait. I’m not sure if it’s because of the fact that he has taken one of my senses away, but I feel as if, even without sight, I am ultra-aware of his movements. I hear the rustling of clothing being removed and dropping onto the floor. My pulse quickens and heat pools between my thighs. Somewhere in the background, soft music starts to fill the room, making it a little harder to hear him. The aroma of the roses hangs in the air and caresses my nostrils. Every nerve ending in my body is tingling with anticipation. River unclasps my front close bra and releases my breasts from their lacy prison. I gasp as something velvety skims across my neck, every inch of my skin prickling with goosebumps. It’s unfamiliar but feels incredible and my body quivers with desire. I realize he’s using a rose as it slowly trails down my collar bone and sensation has me nearly losing my mind. He moves lower and brushes the soft petals of the rose across my nipples and I can feel them harden. The mattress dips slightly and my hips buck up as he sucks a nipple into his mouth. His hand slides down my side, and he makes short work of removing my panties. River kisses his way down to the center of me and throws my leg over his shoulder. He buries his face between my thighs, and doesn’t take any prisoners as he starts licking, using lengthy, quintessential strokes. My legs are trembling as he continues his sweet, oral assault.

“Oh God, yes,” I gasp as he inserts two digits inside my throbbing pussy.

His clever mouth has found that little bundle of nerves, and he sucks it into his mouth while making beckoning motions with his fingers deep inside my core. It’s not long before I feel the waves of pleasure wash over me, engulfing me like a tsunami. I call out his name, and he sucks at my clit once more before moving up and capturing my eager mouth with his. Way too soon, he pulls back, lifts the mask up and my eyes flutter open.

“I need to feel you,” he says roughly. “And I want you to look at me, as you ride me.”

He tugs at the scarves and releases me. Before I can even blink, he has us flipped around and I am in a prime position to lower myself onto him. I tease us both a little as I slide his head through my soaking folds. But I’m impatient and need to feel his cock inside of me, so I push down and slowly let him fill me to the hilt. I feel impossibly full.

I place my hands flat onto his chest to anchor myself and circle my hips.

“Fuck,” he growls when I start to move in earnest.

I know that he’s getting close when his hands fly to my hips and slow my movement.

“Touch yourself,” he orders as he pushes upwards.

Hmmm, I love it when dominant River comes out to play. I obey, no questions asked. My hand slides between my legs and I rub my clit as he continues to pump into me. It is intense and perfect as our eyes fill with primal lust lock. It isn’t long before I’m gasping his name as another earth-shattering orgasm overtakes me. River follows me moments later with a guttural growl and I swear that it’s the sexiest sound I’ve ever heard. I collapse on top of him and try to catch my breath while River gently strokes my hair. We just lay there for a moment, basking in the afterglow of glorious sex.

“I can’t believe you crashed my sister’s bachelorette party to come and seduce me,” I say jokingly.

He chuckles and kisses the top of my head.

“I missed you, I have been missing you. I don’t want to be away from you,” he says.

  “I feel the same way.”

“I think that we should combine our bachelorette and bachelor party when our time comes,” he says casually.

My heart skips a beat and I swallow hard.

“Aren’t you jumping the gun here? You’ve not even proposed.”

River clasps my chin between his index finger and his thumb and searches my eyes.

“Not yet, Goddess,” he mutters before silencing me with a soft kiss.

  LINE 39

  Verlene Landon

A happy ending that is just the beginning.

(LINE 39 is a sweet introduction to Rue & Lena that’ll leave you craving more.)

  1

  Lena

Lena hated herself a little more each time she left the flower shop with a bouquet of lies. Today, they took the form of blood red roses.

Just like regular lies, they grew bigger and bigger as time went on. This particular line of untruths started as a chance meeting and a small spray of daisies. It had now blossomed to red roses and love.

Yep, just like regular lies, only these smell better.

The soft tinkle of the bell was like a condemnation. You lie. You lie. You lie. How could a bell sound so taunting?

“Bye, Lena. See you next week,” Cindy called from the counter. Lena barely waved goodbye. Which was sad, considering Cindy was the closest thing Lena had to a friend.

As she stepped into the sun she wondered, not for the first time since moving here, what Cindy must think of her. Did Cindy know the flowers weren’t just for décor, but to convince her dad she was fine? Looking forward and living instead of holed up in her cabin away from the world?

  Lies.

Lena hoped she never got caught slipping the card into her palm after insisting she didn’t need one since the flowers were just to brighten a room. Thank God they were free or she would’ve been shoplifting every week.

  More lies.

In truth, she only left the house when she absolutely had to. She didn’t drive or go out to meet people, nothing. Weekly trips to the floral shop were her only real social interaction. Cindy always chatted her up as she gathered her flowers.

As much as Lena hated social interaction ever since her accident, she didn’t seem to mind Cindy so much. Maybe because Cindy never once asked about the eye patch and scars or stared at her with pity or even curiosity.

Cindy was the only person in over a year and a half who didn’t do that. She treated her like everyone else . . . she treated her like she wasn’t hideous. For that alone, Cindy deserved more than a half-hearted wave, but Lena was in a less than half-hearted mood. Her lies were running her down. They would catch up with her in a few days’ time.

She’d never meant for any of this to happen, but her dad was heartsick and she couldn’t stand the pain in his voice every time he called and begged her to move back home. The fact that she would lose him soon tore at her very soul.

Her father didn’t understand—would never understand—she couldn’t stay there anymore. Not looking like she did. Everywhere Lena went in her hometown, someone who knew the beauty queen turned five o’clock weather girl was there. Pitying looks followed by some well-intentioned statement of how hard it must be for her considering . . .

They never finished their sentiment; they didn’t need to. Lena knew they meant to go from being the beauty to being the beast. It was hard, harder than anyone could imagine. But harder than that is knowing I’m unlovable.

Even here, people knew, but since she wasn’t their weather girl, the looks didn’t seem as pitying. Of course, everyone here still knows, my accident made statewide news.

Lena lost everything as a result of that day—her career, her sight for the most part, her shallow boyfriend, and her freedom.

Now she had to rely on ride shares and cabs to go places. She was a virtual prisoner in her own body. But Lena would be damned if her dad would be locked up right along with her. Lena would prove to him her life wasn’t ruined and she was happy. It wasn’t the truth, but the truth didn’t seem to matter in the grand scheme of things.
