An’ the fate o’ ’is mighty fleet;
An’ they mentions the fleece o’ Ulysses from Greece
In words wot I can’t repeat.
“Oh, they was wise in dissecting flies,
An’ they knew strong verbs from weak,
But no one jumps fer the bloomin’ pumps,
Or dreams o’ fixin’ the leak.
“To meself I cries: ‘Git up! arise!
You’re only a untaught boy,
The Latin you know wouldn’t make much show,
An’ you ain’t met Helen o’ Troy,
“You kin sail away in the boat, or stay
An’ perish with learnin’ ’ere,
But if you’d be a mariner free
Your course it is written clear.’
“So I glides away in the mornin’ gray
While the brig was sinkin’ fast,
An’ the wise crew’s specs gleamed from the decks —
They was talkin’ shop to the last.
“Oe’r the foamin’ waves, a-lackin’ shaves
An’ other necessities,
I sailed an’ sailed, ‘till at last I hailed
A bark wot me tired eyes sees.
“So ends me tale — but I often wail
When a new built school I see,
Fer I’m sure that crew was through an’ through,
A excellent faculty.”
In a voice both low and husky,
On a wharf both mean and dusky,
Spake the ancient mariner —
Spake the salt-soaked mariner:
“So in all me deep-sea trips,
I steers clear o’ Scholar Ships.”

THE Anniversary Advocate
I studied faithfully;
And then the way we were rebuked
Suggested this to me:
A little verse that touches life
Brings back a long-lost smile —
Though it may lack an epic’s pomp,
Is better worth our while.
The simple curbstone melody
That soothes the vulgar pain,
Is nearer than a symphony
To rousing hearts again.
And we who write great things and say
“These small rhymes are not good.”
Might ask if e’en by God our “poems.”
As well are understood.
Our verse soars off to sun and moon,
No lofty flight it shirks,
Their rhyme is not so out of tune
As our imposing Works!
These are the thoughts that bothered me,
The thoughts that would not drown,
So I took up my pen, you see,
And idly wrote them down.
