“Want me to ask if a peds nursery rotation can be added to neurosurgery residency?” Kayla suggested.

“I hope when Angela and Michael have kids, it’s nothing like this. Cheers to escaping the wrath of the hospital and medical school.” Eliza poured them both their fourth glass of wine. “I’d feel bad about celebrating this whole situation without her.”

“It’s Friday night, kids are in bed, and I am not ready to hear about her and Harper in bed. Though Stella would, and I would have to listen. Very closely.” Kayla drank half her cup.

“What a year,” Eliza refilled Kayla’s cup. “Think of what happened.”

“High rise fire. Blizzard. Domestic terrorism. Gunfight. Tornado.” Kayla toasted the insanity.

“Who cares about those? I hooked up with a resident. Stella had a baby after three-daddy-drama. You almost cheated on Steadman and finally broke up. And Angela made me the proudest, by bedding and wedding a cute medical student.”

“You forgot secret Fire Chief wedding."

“I’m gonna take credit for that one too since it happened while she was my patient,” Eliza fake crowed.

Kayla’s phone beeped on the counter. She grimaced and pressed a button.

  “What was that?”

“Steadman. He keeps texting me.” Kayla finished her glass.

  “Block his number.”

“I can’t. What if I have a plastics consult someday?”

“Stupid hospital logic,” Eliza said. “What does he want?”

“The usual. ‘I’m sorry. I was an ass. I crossed the line. Talk to you soon.’”

“Hmm, how presumptuous. He’s gonna corner you at the hospital?” Eliza laughed at the idea of stuffed shirt Steadman begging for anything or anyone. How had he once been one of her husband’s closest friends?

“I guess I’ll call security. He hates scenes. Don’t worry. I’ll stay strong.”

“You stay strong. The hospital sex whammy must be resisted.” Eliza got up because someone rang the doorbell. “Oh my GOD. Alex Casserty! The baby is fine. It’s been five whole…”

Eliza flung the front door open. “Aww crap. You are not welcome here.”

Daniel Steadman leaned unsteadily on the doorframe, his eyes glazed over. He wore a pair of ripped jeans and a ratty T-shirt.

And he smelled like he’d taken a shower in scotch.

“I’m sorry. Lizzzaaa. I got mad. I was a jerk. I said shit about you. Sorryyyyy.”

He helpfully threw up on her floor before inviting himself in and flopping on her couch.

Goddamn, mother fucking, drunk billionaire doctors who can’t stay away.

“Daniel! What happened?” Kayla ran over to him.

“Izzz drunk. Izz sorry. Said we’d talk,” he slurred.

Of course, Kayla was all over him, and Eliza wished she could block this entire scene.

Poor Kayla was falling for this—again—hook, line, and sinker.

It was hilarious and sad that Kayla lived in fear of being like her bio dad. She couldn’t see she was exactly like their mother.

He’s sorry. He’ll do better this time. I can fix him.

Elizabeth found small consolation in the fact that this was the first time they’d officially broken up. It had lasted for a full week, which was a start.

On principle, Eliza didn’t have objections to drunk hospital relationships. Sadly, it was blindingly clear Steadman and Kayla weren’t right for each other.

Eventually, they would realize it. Everyone else would have to endure their continued drunken poor decisions and attempts to fit the circle peg into the square hole.

Some day he would do something Kayla wouldn’t be able to ignore.

Until then, Eliza would have to settle in to wait.

And get a mop for her floor.

Angela’s evening had to be way better than this.

  Chapter 70

Michael had his hands braced against the wall. “Angela, when Stella Magi told you to give me a BJ, she probably didn’t mean every day.”

Angela was on her knees in nothing but a pair of lacy panties, deep throating him. She paused to tell him, “Oh, Stella definitely meant every day. More than once, for sure.”

“I might die of dehydration,” Michael moaned, because she went right back to lavishing attention on his rigid cock and teasing his sack in her two hands.

He allowed his blonde angel to keep going until he was ready to pass out.

Still, he craved more touch. A BJ, enjoyable as it was, didn’t compare to accessing Angela’s entire body. From here, he couldn’t kiss her or drive her crazy. He was quite found of suckling the pink tips of her breasts as he pounded her.

Her mouth had other uses, so he tugged her hair back to stop her.

Every bit his wet dream, she raised her chin, lips parted and dusted with his precum. “Yes, husband?”

“Turn around and bend over.” She winked and presented her round ass to him. His erection jumped, very interested in what was beneath the lace. Fucking paradise.

He pointed at her underwear. “Were these expensive?”

  “Not really—”

He didn’t let her finish and swept her into his arms. Her bed was one toss away, and when she bounded onto the comforter, he asked, “How so?”

“According to Stella’s sexy panties plan, these are expensive and sexy enough to make you tear them off and cheap enough no one feels bad about doing it.”

“She definitely gives good advice.” Michael, already naked himself, finished the job on Angela by shredding the scrap of lace down the seams.

“Hey, I liked those,” she protested.

“So did I, but you’ll like this better.” He lifted her delicious thighs over his shoulders and gave her slit a long lingering swipe of his tongue.

He moaned again; she was drenched. Nothing in life like a woman getting wet giving a blowjob.

Certain things couldn’t be faked. Like the way she mewed while he swirled his tongue around her clit. She made the best babbling sounds.

A few more licks, and he’d bet he could get her to say Latin backward too.

“Fuck. Michael.” She thrust her hips against his face, rubbing her scent into his pores. It encouraged him to increase his attention to her straining pearl.

He was rewarded with more wetness and a front-row seat to her screaming orgasm.

“God. Seriously. God,” Angela lay back, flushed in the afterglow.

Her skin was damp, and he had the temptation to jerk himself to completion, adding his cum too.

No, his cock was greedy, and he hadn’t fucked his sweet angelic wife into incoherence. It was almost cute how she didn’t always realize how many more things he could do to her.

It was a fun game of discovery, and he wasn’t done with her yet. She likely thought she was too content to move.

First, he snuggled next to her, his larger furrier leg over hers.

Or she probably thought it was snuggling.

His right hand traveled across her slick skin, wandering toward the juncture of her thighs.

She blinked when his fingers parted her wet folds, those soft pink petals. Her breath sped up slightly with each movement of his hand. He went deeper, and she figured out his leg was there to hold her still and unable to shift her hips for more friction.

  “Michael…”

“Shhh, you stay right there.” Michael bent forward and flicked her right nipple with his tongue.

His wife tensed, as did the nipple. It only encouraged him to do it again and again. Between his hand and his mouth, he coaxed her arousal back to life. She hissed and tried to move, but he pressed her down onto the bed, now latching onto the left side, suckling in time with his fingering of her wet pussy.

  “You. Michael?”

“Do you like it?” he asked, accompanying the question by circling the nipple he’d just released. “Do you want me to stop?”

“No. Please,” Angela hissed, her pupils dilated, aroused.

“Should I make you come again, or do you want to come around my cock? Tell me, Angela. You want me inside of you?”

“Now.” Reducing her to single syllables ranked close enough to backward Latin.

He shifted hips over, mounting her. She grabbed his shoulders and held on through her next orgasm.

Michael could have gone with her, but he savored the convulsions. Only then did he follow.

Her exhausted, overstimulated body cuddled against him, basking in the afterglow.

Michael wrapped his arms around her, letting her slowly doze off, and relived the day this became forever.

  Chapter 71

The day after getting held at gunpoint

“Dearly beloved,” the Chaplain said, the waves of Edgewood park lapping at his heels. “We… I am here today to join Angela Lydia Perkins and Michael Garrett Harper in holy matrimony.”

Angela and Michael stood barefoot, arm in arm, in the sand. She wore an ankle length white dress, and he was in his Fred Astaire tux.

“Since we have no witnesses, which are not necessary for legality anyway, my question is to the dog. If you have any reason why these two should not be married, speak now or forever hold your peace,” the Chaplain asked the only other being nearby.

Taussig, the Dog of Honor, shredded the bouquet of flowers, formerly tied to her neck.

“I have decided she means ‘no.’ Now, if she starts talking, we’ll have a different discussion and more drinks.”

It had been a busy morning, since they had opted to spend the night at Michael’s unburglarized house after Angela’s suspension/vacation.

They were first in line when the court opened, stopped by the jeweler, florist, and David’s Bridal. Though it was his day off, the Chaplain graciously agreed to meet them at Edgewood Park Beach.

He was particularly thrilled to learn neither of them were dying of cancer or there was a secret baby involved.

“Do we have vows anyone wants to read?”

Michael had written his with a borrowed pen on an old hospital note while sitting outside waiting for Angela to try on dresses from the discount section of David’s Bridal. The store workers insisted the possibility of him seeing the bride before the wedding was bad luck. To their utter shock, Angela bought the dress and veil she was modeling, cut the tags off, and joined Michael and the Dog of Honor in the car.

He had a million things to say. They’d bent the truth, they’d broken up, they’d hurt each other, and in the end found forgiveness. He could have talked about redemption, loss, pain, and sacrifice.

But he wasn’t going to. In this moment, it wasn’t about the past. It was only about their love, and he didn’t want to mar one second.

“Angela, I thought I had to face this world alone. Then I found you, everything I ever dreamed of, everything I ever wanted. The woman who held my heart, who was my equal, who wasn’t afraid of a challenge of a very late in life future doctor. I’m not a perfect man. I can only offer you a good man who promises to love and cherish you every day. I love you, Angel, and can’t wait to spend my life with you.”

“Does the bride have vows as well?”

“I do.” She hadn’t written anything down. He assumed she’d composed them in her head at some point. “Michael. I didn’t know what it meant to be in love, to be vulnerable, to stop being steel every minute, until you. You gave this to me, and I hope giving you all my love forever gives you the same feeling I get when I’m with you.”

His heart was singing, and he wanted to dance off with her in his arms forever. Though he’d be happy to stare into her eyes for forever, too.

“Ahem. I’m continuing the ceremony now. Soulful gazing after the ceremony, please,” the Chaplain reminded them.

Michael’s lovely bride gave him her best conspirator smile, reminding him of the other married things they’d be doing very soon.

The Chaplain plowed forward, “Do you, Angela, take Michael to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, to love and to cherish, in sickness and in health as long as you both shall live? If so, answer ‘I do.’”

  “I do.”

“Do you, Michael, take Angela to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, to love and to cherish, in sickness and in health as long as you both shall live? If so, answer ‘I do.’”

  “I do.”

“You may exchange rings. Him first,” the Chaplain instructed.

Michael took out a diamond solitaire set with four diamonds on each side and took Angela’s much smaller left hand.

“With this act of union, let no man tear asunder what God has joined. Repeat after me. ‘With this ring, I thee wed.’”

“With this ring, I thee wed.” He slipped it on her ring finger. They’d bought the standard six and a half ring and would get it sized down later. He was going to get her a plainer band later to wear to work.

“Now the bride. ‘With this ring, I thee wed.’”

“With this ring, I thee wed.” Angela untied the blue ribbon from her neck that held his new ring. She got the gold band on his finger, despite Taussig abandoning the wedding to chase a seagull.

“By the power invested in me by God, and the state of Ohio, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”

Michael leaned forward to kiss her, promising, “Let no man tear asunder what God has joined.”

“Or hospital,” Angela agreed, kissing him back, no regrets no matter what the future held.

“We’ll need you to vet and get background checks on each of these people.” Maura handed Francis the list.

Francis asked, “Background checks? I write copy for press releases.”

“I’m sure you’ll figure it out. Police Chief Reyes should be willing to help,” Maura said. Hopefully, they could get a solid half of their list to agree. The Harpers were almost certainly in, and the Firehouse 15 people would stay out of loyalty to the bride. It would be a coup to get Steadman, but it was a gamble to ask his ex-wife and her new husband.

“Getting the bridal party and the venues lined up is the first goal. Other details can be worked out later,” Fitzpatrick told her secretary.

“It’s a lot of work to pull together by Valentine’s Day. How many people, and what is the budget?”

The Mayor had given her carte blanche to pull off the city PR event of the century, so Maura said, “Three thousand wedding guests.”

Francis dropped her pen. “We don’t even have two thousand people at the annual Firefighter Ball. And it took everyone in PR and half the HR staff to pull it off.”

“Don’t worry,” Fitzpatrick said breezily, showing her teeth. “Your budget is five million dollars.”

The blonde almost collapsed. She squeaked, “Five million? Really? The Mayor said we could?”

Maura nodded. “This will put us on the map. Consider it an investment in the future.”

Fitzpatrick laughed, and Maura couldn’t help joining in. Money and good PR could buy anything. A hospital. A city. A soul.

Power was the currency, and, done right, they could ride this to the top…

  A few months later…

  Raj,

Cousin, I can’t take it anymore. Mom is driving me nuts. These endless women she keeps throwing at me are killing me. What did she do—put out an add in the Times of India to attract every Gujarati woman in six provenances?

It’s smart of you to skip the trip to the old country this summer. This may sound crazy, but as soon as I get back, I’m quitting my job and moving to Cleveland. Breaking up with my fiancee last year was the worst decision ever. I’m a dumbass for not realizing how awesome she was. I miss her like crazy, and it’s time I set things right.”

I was wrong. So wrong. And I hope Angela is willing forgive me.

Is it cool if I crash at your place when I arrive?
