I open my mouth to retort when the back gate behind me clangs open. We both stand, hands inching toward the holsters on our belts. There’s no wind to make the gate open and close.
“Cason!” Porter calls as he comes around the corner.
“Over here!”
A second later he comes barreling around the corner, a woman in his arms, and she doesn’t look conscious. Blood seeps from her somewhere. I squint, that’s the woman that came up on our hit list that Dad put together. I was the one to pick who got who.
I thought it was strange that she was on the list, she didn’t seem like our normal hit, but Dad doesn’t put innocent people on our lists. I gave her to Porter because I knew he would find whatever diabolical reason she was on the list and take care of her.
I run up to him and glance over my shoulder to make sure the girls are still in the house. I whisper at him. “What the hell? Why are you bringing a hit here? Are you insane? Josie has her friend over and she doesn’t know about any of this!”
I look down at her, she’s hit in the side somewhere. “And why did you do such a shitty job? This isn’t protocol.”
Dimitri comes to stand next to me, hopefully blocking her body from the view of the girls.
Porter growls. “I didn’t do this! I was about to hit her with a dart that would make her sleep when someone else shot her! Isn’t Josie’s friend a doctor or something?”
I blink and look down at the woman. “A nurse in training. I don’t know if she can handle this, and she doesn’t know anything about us. Are you saying she has two hits out on her?”
He nods.
I frown. That’s rare. I stare at her. Who the hell is this woman and why does someone or more than one someone want her dead?
