“What about this one?” Cathy asked Samantha, as she pulled a short, sparkly pink gown from the rack.

“Oh, wow. Look, Sam. It’s beautiful,” I added.

Samantha walked over and took the metal hanger with the dress on it from Cathy. She placed it against her body and turned to face a nearby mirror.

Shaking her head, she said, “Nuh uh. This would look better on you.”

She pulled the gown away from her, placed it up against me, and dragged me in front of her to view my reflection in the mirror.

“Look how gorgeous it looks with your pretty skin tone, Hales. You’d be nominated Prom Queen within seconds of arriving to the prom,” Samantha continued.

“Dude, you’d be like the very real-life version of Cinderella,” Cathy added, walking over to the opposite side of Samantha.

Now the both of them were standing on either side of me.

It was true, though; the gown looked absolutely stunning against my complexion.

“Hailey, you’ve got to try it on,” Cathy said.

I stood there for a moment before replying, “I can’t.”

Quickly turning around, I headed to another rack and continued searching for gowns for my two best friends. It would be their time to shine. They deserved the best and more.

Cathy and Samantha slowly walked toward me, placing the pink gown back on the rack. I could tell they were watching my every move.

“How about this one, Sam. The blue would bring out your eyes,” I said, picking an aquamarine shaded veil gown.

“Yeah, it’s pretty. But tell me, why can’t you?” Samantha asked.

  “Hmm?” I responded.

“Why can’t you come to prom, like a normal teenager, and enjoy a night out with your friends?” Samantha tried again.

“It could also be a good way to get your mind off Luke for a bit, and maybe not worry so much,” Cathy suggested.

I shook my head fiercely, refusing to let them talk me into such absurdities.

How could they possibly think I could ever get my mind off Luke, even for a little bit? Did they not understand that I had no idea how my love was? How could I possibly enjoy myself, even for just one night?

“No way. There’s no way I’d ever be able to not think about Luke. It’s just not possible. He’s my very first thought when I wake up in the morning, and the very last thing I think about before I close my eyes at night. It’s just not feasible. Not for me, anyway,” I said.

After the girls had found the perfect gowns, we made our way over to the cash registers. Samantha decided to go with the blue gown I had selected for her. When she tried it on, it looked as if it had been made for her; it fit just like a glove.

Cathy went with a long, black evening gown that complemented her figure. She was a bit on the curvier side, so the dark shade hid her flaws while emphasizing her curves.

As we stood in line—we were next—Samantha and Cathy tried to get me to cheer up. They had noticed my mood had done a one-eighty, and they could tell I had been spacing out.

Suddenly, as if on cue, an alert came over on the cashier’s radio, announcing that we had officially gone to war.

It was at that very moment the world went black. I felt my head hit the counter, as I crumbled to the floor.
