Andrew Cuomo also merits particular mention. It was with some regret that I had to rake through the history of his law firm’s conflicts of interest. I broke news stories about those conflicts in 1986 and 1988, and am convinced that those stories were right on the mark—Cuomo was, in my view, influence peddling. He has dramatically changed his life since 1988, leaving the firm and devoting himself fulltime to running a nonprofit organization that builds housing for the homeless. This does not change the facts of what happened in the period I wrote about, but it is clear that he is now making a substantial public contribution, and at far less an annual salary.

I also have some regrets about another character in this drama who comes off badly in the text, Richard Kahan, the UDC president who helped facilitate the Hyatt deal so long ago. I have found Kahan in the years since to be a straightforward and decent man, who has made many contributions to the city. But, unfortunately, this view of him cannot alter the events of the late seventies.

The fourth group indispensable to this book project was the crew at HarperCollins. No one helped this book more than my editor Rick Kot, the most skillful handler of a text I have ever had. He found a hundred ways to get me past my fixation on detail, and he has never met a bureaucratic problem he couldn’t quickly resolve. In addition, a host of others at HarperCollins have been helpful—Bill Shinker, Sheila Gillooly, Jim Fox, and John Mabie. Victor Kovner, my friend and attorney, was also his usual insightful self, as was my agent and wise adviser Frances Goldin.

Lastly, my extended family deserves a special thank-you. My wife, Frances Barrett, was a jewel of patience and support. My son, Mac, willingly sacrificed our time together on the diamond. My in-laws, who live near Atlantic City and kept me fed for months, were wonderful—John, Debbie, and Frances McGettigan. My close friends LynNell Hancock and Charlie and Carole Stern Isaacs savored parts of the manuscript, encouraging me along the way. It is just not possible to know how demanding it is to do a project of these dimensions in such a relatively short time. And it’s not possible to know how much a wife, a son, and good friends can mean in those dog days. I now know.
