Breaking Protocol, page 3
“Is there anything else that you think I need to know? Or, anyone else I should visit with?”
Ms. Sissy hesitated, “No.”
“Are you sure Ms. Sissy?” Alex pressed eyebrows up, doing her best Bret impression.
“I don’t know if this matters, but a week ago, when I came into the office… Mr. Yazzie was already here and he was yelling at someone on the phone. I’m not really sure who it was, but I know what day, because he took the rest of it off and let me work from home.”
“Well, thank you Ms. Sissy. We’ll be requesting the phone records anyway. What day was that?”
“Last Monday, the 11th.”
“Alrighty. I’ll make sure to take a good look at the records. Thank you for all your help today Ms. Sissy, it was a pleasure working with you.” Alex held out her hand and Ms. Sissy plopped her overly dry, limp as a noodle hand into Alex’s.
Yeesh… dead fish handshake… bleh!
Outside the lab, Alex called Bret, “Hey Bret, I think we may have gotten a teeny tiny lead. Seems Mr. Yazzie was wigging out on someone about a week ago before anyone in the office had arrived. Gotta love the eavesdropping secretary!”
“That’s good. I’ve been with CSI all day… they’ve found a possible entry wound… of a needle.”
“Seriously? An injection?”
“Yep…looks that way. We are waiting on blood analysis right now.”
“Interesting…”
“I’m going to head back to the station and do some paperwork on this. I’ll see you in a bit.”
“Roger that.”
Intrigued, Alex decided to go take a look at the crime scene one more time, in the calm cool light of day. It was always easier when there weren’t thirty police officers roaming around the scene.
Alex was able to find parking about a block down from the Yazzie residence. On her way up to the front door, she noticed that the crime scene tape seal had been cracked.
Alex looked up and down the street, no one was milling about. She pulled her gun out of her holster.
Shit, I wish Bret was here...
She eased the door open and quietly entered the home. The house was silent and dark. If she hadn’t seen the broken tape, she would’ve assumed she was completely alone. She crouched down and let her eyes adjust to the dim light in the house. She crab-walked down the hall, making sure to keep completely silent, pausing every few seconds to listen for movement.
She made her way to the front sitting room, and had a brief memory of how it felt to be sucked into Kara’s gaze. She shook that feeling off and continued down that hall, past the stairs.
She paused again. Nothing.
She continued down the hall and then heard it. A strange metallic sound… then again. And then, a brief shuffling of...papers?
What the fuck…?
As she silently stalked down to the next room, the noises got a little more audible. Definitely paperwork. She stood, not knowing what she would find on the other side of the doorway. She paused, gun up, safety off, and counted to three to steady herself. Then she whipped around the door frame, “Hold it! Police! Don’t move!” She commanded using the most authoritative voice she could muster.
The person was outlined by the light from the window, so there was no way to identify who Alex had in her sights. The good news was there was only one person in the room and he or she was frozen in place.
“Alex?”
Kara’s voice?
Alex moved around the room, gun still trained on the intruder. After her eyes adjusted, she lowered her gun, clicked the safety on, and holstered her weapon. It was Kara.
“What the HELL are you doing in here?! This is a crime scene. You can’t just break the tape, yanno?” Alex said in an almost booming voice.
“I’m sorry. It couldn’t wait. I needed those papers. I forgot them last night.”
“So you thought you would just waltz right in here?”
“I’m not doing anything wrong!”
“You’re breaking the law!”
“Well, you didn’t have to come in here all Rambo-like!”
“The hell I didn’t! People who enter crime scenes are either police officers or criminals!”
“Well, I’m neither!”
“I’m not so sure about that!”
Suddenly, they both realized that they were standing only inches apart, pulses racing, chests heaving rapidly in anger.
Or… excitement?
Kara was staring up at Alex, anger and fear in her eyes. She continued to stare at Alex and Alex at her for what seemed like a full minute. Then, she gaze moved to Alex’s mouth.
Alex noticed the change, first it was a furtive glance at her mouth and then Kara just stared at it. Like she was waiting for something. Both of them had completely stopped breathing. There was literally no noise in the house. And then, simultaneously, a cacophony of noise and movement as Alex dipped her head to meet Kara’s lips, and Kara wrapped her arms around Alex’s neck. Kara let out a moan of pleasure. A noise of giving in. They mashed their bodies together and crashed into the desk as their lips and tongues raged war on one another.
OMG OMG OMG OMG…..
Neither woman wanted to come up for air, but finally Alex pulled her head back and looked into Kara’s eyes. Both of them breathing rapidly, again.
OMG, what have I done?
Kara suddenly looked very unsure and doe-like.
Shit. Did I do all of that? Did I just attack her? No. She kissed me back… and with a vengeance.
“Uhhh...this is … uhh probably not the best place to …. Uhh…” Alex stammered.
Kara pulled back a bit further, and attempted to straighten out her clothes which Alex had mussed. Alex noted that Kara had dressed down in jeans and a t-shirt...still, she looked sexier than anyone Alex had ever met.
Kara pressed her ravaged lips together.
My god, they are so red and swollen…
“I apologize. I hope I didn’t…” Alex started.
“Please. Do not apologize.” Kara had put her hands on her hips and looked up at Alex. Her eyes twinkled in humor. “I’m pretty sure we both just did that.”
Alex grinned at Kara, and noticed that she shivered in excitement. “So, there’s that…”
“You know, you are making me feel like maybe I’m a lamb and you’re a wolf with that smile…”
“This smile?” Alex pointed to her now neutral face… “Nahhh, this is my on the job smile.”
“Oh, too bad.” Kara quipped and turned toward the desk.
Alex touched Kara’s arm, and she turned slightly with an inquisitive look. “I’m sorry if I startled you before… I honestly didn’t know what I would find in this room, but I wasn’t thinking it would be you.”
“Mmm… and now?”
“Now, I’m pretty glad it was you,” Alex said.
Kara turned to Alex, stepped within an inch of Alex’s body, put her hands around her neck and said, “Pretty glad?” She murmured and pressed her lips to Alex’s. Alex’s body stiffened with arousal and she grabbed Kara by the hips pulling her until they were toe to toe, waist to waist, and chest to chest. No daylight could be seen between their bodies. The light kiss Kara offered at first became wet. Tongues danced together, Alex let out a guttural noise that was akin to caveman speak and they both crashed back into the desk.
Alex moved her hands up into Kara’s hair, twisting it gently and using her hair to move Kara’s head for a different kissing angle.
It’s like touching silk…
Kara moved her hands up and down Alex’s powerful back and shoulder muscles and she let out a satisfied sound of pleasure. Their kiss deepened and became more intense.
A few more moments of this… and I’ll die of pleasure…
Alex lowered her hands to Kara’s face, her delicate yet strong features needed to be explored… first with her fingers, then with her mouth. She kissed Kara’s eyelids, her straight nose, her beautiful cheekbones, then nibbled at her jaw, and finally made her way to Kara’s neck. “Mmmmm, oh Alex,” Kara whispered, obviously enjoying this moment as much as Alex was.
Then Alex’s phone buzzed.
What are you DOING?! She’s digging around in a crime scene… she could be a suspect. Do I care?? Shit.
Alex pulled back again. This time, she put a couple of feet between them. Chests heaving, struggling a little for breath. Alex put her hands on her knees and looked up at Kara. “Shit…. I want this. I want you. But…” Alex started.
“Perhaps another time…” Kara said.
Alex looked at Kara – head to toe.
So sexy.
Everything about Kara said “sex NOW” to Alex. Her pupils, her lips, her heaving chest, her visibly taut nipples – she was literally braced against the desk waiting for Alex – but she couldn’t. The investigation. Her father. The needle.
Fuuuuuuuck.
Kara whirled around and started shuffling paperwork. “What are you doing here, really?” Alex asked.
“I’m really trying to find some files that my father said were in his desk… but I cannot for the life of me figure out where the hell he put them.”
“Why are they important? What’s in them?”
Kara shot a look Alex, “Cop mode?” She waited a beat and then answered the question, “They are environmental impact statements for a couple of our projects. I’m supposed to meet with Senator Johnson next week and the impact statements are crucial to the meeting.”
“Senator Johnson, the anti-environment donkey?”
“Yep, that’s the one.”
“Good luck with that. I’d rather shove my fist in his face than papers.”
“Well, good luck with that. He’s talking about running for President, and he wants to show how his cost cutting initiatives haven’t impacted the environment. He’s got a lot of secret service looking guys around him all the time now.”
“Uh huh. Any idea if the papers you were looking for were good or bad for him?”
“No. In fact, my father was the only one other than the independent contractors we hired that have the results.” She sounded frustrated. She held the papers up and slapped them back on the desk. “Well, great. Now I get to figure out which companies we contracted and see if I can get copies. Worst. Week. Ever.”
“Yeah… Look I’m sorry. I know that you want to look for stuff in here, but you really can’t just barge in here without an escort,” Alex said, going full cop.
“Yeah, you said… but then, can’t you be my escort, Officer Connolly?” Kara said playfully, batting her eyelashes at Alex.
“Ha… that’s Detective Connolly,” Alex replied in a deep voice pointing a finger gun at her with a wink.
“Oh… that’s right... my bad,” she said with a wink. “Well, damnit. I don’t see them. I guess I don’t need anything from in here. Will you escort me out?”
“Yeah. I can do that,” Alex said.
After she walked Kara to her car, and fought every natural urge to pin her to the driver’s side door with her body, she made her way back to her own and headed to the station. She struggled the entire ride there with whether or not she should say something to Bret about finding Kara in the Yazzie house. She decided she’d keep it to herself for the time being, but made notes in her log regarding the encounter and the discussion about Senator Johnson. She did leave out the smoldering passion and smooch-fest, however. No need to give anyone those details. Those she would save for a lonely night.
So, pretty much every night? So sad… so true…
Sometimes You’re the Hydrant
Once back at the station, Alex and Bret went over a few of the hanging case details. The tox screen still wasn’t back.
“Cherry said to give it 24 hours. She practically kicked me out of her office around noon,” Bret complained
“Has CSI found anything?”
“Not a thing yet. Based on the contents of the Yazzie’s dog’s stomach, the dog appears to have been killed by poisoning… probably in some sort of meatball.”
Alex gave Bret a sideways glance, “Lovely.”
“Yeah. Lovely. Have you eaten?”
“No, I just finished up at Symbio, thought I’d kill some time going over the crime scene again…” she started.
“Let’s go get some grub,” Bret suggested and grabbed the keys. When they got in the car he continued, “See anything different in the clear light of day?”
Yeah, I saw quite a few different things… touched some too… and the kissing….
While Alex reminisced about her encounter with Kara, Bret had started the car, backed out and started making his way towards some sort of lunch.
She was so soft. Her lips so full and pliant. She fit her body into mine like a glove…
“Yo, Alex?!” Alex snapped to attention…
“Wha…?” She started again, “Oh! Yeah. No. I didn’t find anything useful… Sorry man, I have the stares. What are we going to eat?”
“I figured we’ve both had a crazy day, let’s have an Italian late lunch.”
“Giacomo’s?”
“It’s like we’re one person sometimes….” Bret said grinning.
After a hearty meal of pasta, salad, and a large slab of meat, both Alex and Bret were regretting their large Italian lunch. Alex drove while Bret made exaggerated groans of agony about the state of his full belly.
“Damn that place is good. I think I need a new pant size, but oooooooooo-eeee!” Bret cooed.
**** Calling all cars. Calling all cars. We have a 211 in progress. Shots have been fired. Roll Code 2 as we may have a 132 situation. It’s the pawn shop on Bromsfield by Tremont Street****
“Shit. We gotta take this. That’s Mac’s place. He was hit last month…”
“Well, we’re only about 3 minutes from there… Hit the gas Connolly.”
Bret spun around in his seat, grabbed two vests from under his seat and pulled one on.
Alex brought the car to a halt in the back alley, and pulled on her vest.
“Let’s roll.” Alex said after securing the last strap.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa. What’s the plan?”
“I say we head to the back door of the building and see what we can see. Then we can give everyone an idea of what it looks like. Last time the guy came flying out the front. The back door is through the cage making it the more difficult and less likely departure.”
“I can live with that,” Bret said.
They both popped out of the car and pulled out their pistols. Stealthily they made their towards the back door – it was difficult to see through, the cross-hatchings of metal to protect from intruders didn’t make it any easier.
**** He’s coming out the front. Over. ****
“See, what did I tell you?” Alex said smiling. Both cops holstered their weapons and started making their way back to the car.
A loud crash rang out. A young man, average height and build, emerged from the back end of the store. He had blood on his shirt and carried a silver revolver with a long barrel. In obvious distress, he ripped off the black stocking that was covering his hair exposing a completely shaved dome.
Alex and Bret raised their weapons and took cover behind of the doors of the car. The young gunslinger didn’t seem to notice the two police officers squatting near the car. He rubbed the gun on his temple, and sweat flicked off onto the ground.
“Hold it. Right there. Put the weapon down and your hands in the air,” Bret called out.
The man swung his shaved and tatted head in their direction, lifted his gun carrying hand and pulled the trigger twice in Bret’s direction. The bullets thunked into the passenger side door and Bret crouched below the window to keep his head out of harm’s way.
At this point, the skinhead hadn’t noticed that Alex was there.
Shit – this asshole can’t be more than seventeen… Too young to be shooting at cops in a back alley, and certainly too young to die today.
She took aim at his right shoulder, and squeezed her trigger finger.
* POP *
The kid fell to the ground and started yelling in pain. “You okay, Bret?” Alex yelled over the screaming man.
“Yep… Good shooting. Call it in, I’ll go wrestle this idiot into some cuffs.”
Alex grabbed the mic, called in their location, and requested an ambulance for the punk.
When she looked up, it was like a scene straight out of her worst nightmares. The skinhead had Bret pinned to his body, gun pointed at his head. Blood trickled from his forehead where the perp had bashed him with his gun.
Alex started sweating profusely.
No no no no no… shit shit shit shit….
She trained her gun on the kid, and tried to assess the situation.
What do I do? What is the right thing?
She took a closer look at what him. His eyes were wild. He was bleeding from his right shoulder. He breathed heavily, drooling and spitting on every breath.
Bret had a quiet and stern look on his now sweaty and bloody face. His hands were limply held at his sides. He must have noticed Alex assessing him, because he made a pistol with his fingers and shifted his eyes to the kid.
He wants me to take a fucking shot. While this asshole has a gun to his head.
Fuck. Fuck…. Shit shit shit.
“Put the gun down.”
“SHUT UP… FUCK YOU, YOU FUCKING PIG!!!”
“Listen, you’re hurt, there’s nowhere to go, more police are coming in about two seconds.” No response. “Come on. Let’s get you some medical attention.”
“SHUT UP!”
Alex took a half step around the driver’s side door, put her left hand up, and pointed her gun up in the air. “Look, I’m going to put my gun down. You do the same, and we’ll get you to the hospital, you’re losing a lot of blood.” Alex pointed to the blood still flowing from his shoulder.
The kid glanced down at his shoulder and lowered his gun to Bret’s abdomen.
Bret’s eyes widened, his right hand, previously in a pistol shape started a countdown.
Five… Jesus, don’t do this…
