Fuck it. Fuck protocol. All there is… is Kara.

Alex had Kara’s head pinned to the headboard, and realizing how uncomfortable that might be, disengaged her mouth for a moment, then pulled Kara lower onto the bed so her head was resting on the pillow. Alex immediately pounced on her again.

This kiss was hard and deep and wet. Their tongues mated viciously as if trying to get as much from this one kiss as they could possibly get. Alex’s tongue plumbed the depths of Kara’s mouth and a moan of need and wanting bubbled up from Kara’s throat.

Kara stopped kissing Alex for a moment and opened her eyes.

Alex instinctively pulled back to make sure she wasn’t hurting Kara. She remained hovering over Kara, her hands in fists on either side of her head, holding herself up on her arms.

Kara looked deeply into Alex’s eyes and then rubbed her hands up and down her well-muscled arms. Alex squeezed her hands into tighter fists, trying hard not to get too carried away too quickly.

Kara grabbed Alex by the shirt and pulled her down for another kiss. Right before their lips met, Kara grabbed at Alex by the waist with her legs, and pulled her all the way down into the apex of her thighs. Alex’s body covered Kara completely. Their tongues danced, their bodies writhed against one another.

Oh sweet heaven… I feel like a naughty teenager.

Almost as if they were controlled by outside forces, their bodies, still fully clothed, began to rock together.

Kara sighed and clawed at Alex’s back, “More,” she moaned.

Alex growled in response and pressed her body harder against Kara’s grinding pelvis.

Kara sucked in a breath and grabbed Alex by the lower back.

Alex hissed in desire and cried out in pain.

“Oh my god,” Kara said and let go quickly. “I’m so sorry. I cannot believe I just did that. I’m so, so sorry… I forgot for a split second that you were hurt. Here, let me look.” Kara attempted to push Alex away but Alex stayed where she was.

“I dunno Doc, I’m feeling… very, very good right now,” Alex said through gritted teeth.

“Yeah?” Kara asked with a raised eyebrow.

“Oh yeah, I feel all-nighter-ific…” Alex said and pressed her middle again against the most delicate part of Kara.

Kara’s eyes fluttered, she pushed herself into Alex, let out a soft groan of frustration and then scrambled into a more upright position.

“I think…” She said pressing her ravaged lips together and closing her eyes tight, “I think I should take a look at my patient.”

Alex stared at Kara – her chest was heaving, her hair was mussed, her pupils were dilated in desire, but she had a stubborn set to her mouth. She knew based on Kara’s mouth that any counter argument wasn’t going to go far. She shook her head to get some of the sexual fog to lift and she pulled back from Kara.

“Yeah… Okay… Sure.” She said, and then added, “Just so you know, I have never felt so turned on before, so out of control… so teeth gnashingly–” Alex let out a growl, “You make me feel crazy inside. I think… I think you’re a little bit dangerous.”

Kara sat up on her knees, leaned over Alex and said, “Trust me, Detective, YOU are the dangerous one.” She pulled Alex’s lower lip into her mouth and nibbled on it playfully, “Now let me play Doctor.”

Alex enjoyed letting Kara assess her bruises… sometimes with her fingertips, sometimes with her mouth, other times with her tongue. Eventually, they decided it might be a wise decision to actually sleep since they had a shit day planned out for themselves.

Kara rested her hand gently on Alex’s chest and gently pressed a kiss to her lips, rolled over, and laid on her side waiting for Alex to turn off the light. After Alex switched the light off, Kara’s hand searched for Alex under the covers.

“Hey now, it’s 2AM… what about needing tomorrow to be a fresh start, etc? Your patient needing to heal? Hmmmm?”

“Shush now… I just want to be held,” Kara replied.

And with that, Alex slumped down into the bed and curled herself around Kara.

Alex the big spoon, Kara the little.

This feels delicious…. I dunno how I’m going to fall asleep wrapped around this woman….

Twenty seconds later, Alex drifted off to sleep inhaling Kara’s unique scent and feeling like she never wanted to sleep alone again.

  Big Spoon, Meet Little Spoon

Alex cracked opened her eyes to see light seeping through the tattered curtains and dappling the room. She eased her head off the pillow and spied the time, 8:00. She was still curled around Kara, arm wrapped over her body protectively, and Kara’s hand was covering her own.

I can’t believe how much I slept…. And how well I slept, considering. How is it that we didn’t move all night?

Alex took a few minutes to appreciate Kara while she could, unobserved. Her dark hair fell like a curtain across the pillow, it was soft like silk and smelled fresh and earthy. Her neck was long and graceful, and her pulse beat visibly under her delicate skin. Alex stared at her face a few minutes more, trying to memorize every freckle, every curve, every kissable inch.

And every inch IS achingly kissable…

Alex laid her head back on the pillow, and thought about waking Kara. They had so many miles to cover today and it was already after 8.

Screw it… I did say I would take the car for a couple of days.

Alex snuggled back into Kara and squeezed her gently. She inhaled deeply and tried to memorize the smell of her hair. Alex started to get warm all over, and that warm eventually turned into hot.

Am I actually getting hot and bothered by smelling her hair?!

Seriously, you’re huffing Kara – quit it!

“You can’t keep doing that Detective, you’re going to get addicted,” Kara joked, jolting Alex out of her olfactory induced daydream.

  “Uhh… I don’t know what you mean… I was… yanno, sleeping too,” Alex countered.

“Uh huh… is that what you call it? That’s your normal breathing pattern for sleeping? It sounded more like you were huffing something, and I think that something… was me.”

Alex squeezed Kara tightly against herself, “Well, it’s not my fault that you smell like you do.”

“Mhmmm…” Kara said, and languidly stretched rubbing Alex in all the right places.

  Jesus.

“Something wrong, Detective? Doesn’t breaking protocol feel good?”

“You’re damn right it does,” Alex said and ran her hand down the length of Kara’s body, “Of course, I’m fairly certain that this,” she said indicating Kara’s body, “isn’t standard issue.”

Kara barked out a laugh and flopped over to be nose to nose with Alex.

“I wonder what we’re going to find today?” she mused.

“I’m certain, whatever it is,” Alex answered and looked deeply into Kara’s eyes and caressed her face, “won’t be found without coffee first.”

Kara laughed and playfully fake punched Alex in the side. “Yeah, but we’re going to have to get out of this bed, and I’m not sure anything could convince me to do it.”

“I see,” Alex said with a raised eyebrow. Kara smiled, snuggled her face into Alex’s shoulder, and weaved her arm under Alex’s in a tight hug.

Damn this is nice. She’s so much fun, and so touchy feely… which goes against all my natural instincts… and yet… I love it.

Kara’s shoulders shuddered. Alex tried to pull back to see what she was laughing about, but realized Kara was crying. Sobbing really.

Fuck! What have I done? What did I say?

Alex tried to pull up and away fully from Kara, only to have her body yanked back into a fierce hug. Realizing that Kara wished to remain in this position, she held her tightly, running her hand up and down her back and whispering assurances into her ear. “Everything is going to be okay. You let it out. It’s okay. You’re safe. I’m going to keep you safe.”

Several minutes ticked by, and Kara eventually stopped crying. She pulled back from Alex’s shoulder and wiped her face with her hands.

“I’m sorry. This is not normal for me. I’ve usually got all my emotions locked down. But, you know, my father’s funeral is next week. Last night, I checked my voicemail… I got one from my mother. It was kind of cold. And it was weird. She wasn’t sure if I was going to come to the funeral, can you believe that?” Kara asked, her face twisted in disgust.

  “Well… I…” Alex started.

“I mean, okay, so we’ve had our problems. Yeah, I was kind of disowned in the family-sense, but for fucking out loud, he’s my father. And until a few months ago, everything was normal-ish.” Kara continued interrupting Alex. She wiped more tears from her face and licked a couple that had fallen into the corners of her lips.

  Shit, that’s sexy… She’s even sexy when she’s sad!

Stop it, you’re acting like a horny teen – pay attention.

Kara sniffled a little more and then smiled at Alex, “I’m sorry. Just being held by you makes me think about all that time that I wasted worrying about what my parents were going to think. And then, at the end of it, they find out anyway and now I’m dealing with this funeral thing. I mean, we’re almost like strangers, slightly strangers. Slightly estranged. Definitely strange. Annnnd now I’m talking gibberish.”

Alex smiled widely at that and said with a wink, “Your gibberish makes more sense to me than most logic.”

“Uh huh, how ‘bout we go get you some coffee?” Kara suggested kissing Alex on the tip of the nose.

  “I’d really like that.”

  Over The River

Back in the car, Kara explained, “According to the documents on the USB, the first site is only a few miles from here. Let’s talk to whoever owns the property next to the river and then we can go collect some samples.”

“Sounds like a plan, what are you expecting to find?” Alex asked.

“Oh you know, complete and utter devastation of the river and plant life around it – exactly the opposite of what the Environmental Impact Statement suggests,” Kara replied, her voice filled with sarcasm and disdain.

Alex glanced at Kara, “Perhaps you should let me handle the whole talking to the property owners thing, you seem a bit edgy. And besides, I’m caffein-o-rific and ready to be the smooth talking detective that I am.”

“No offense, Alex, but you shouldn’t be telling anyone that you’re a detective from 200 miles away. I think that’ll only draw attention to the situation.”

Alex chuckled, “Doll face, I wasn’t going to tell them I’m the fuzz, I’m merely going to use my excellent interrogation skills to get some info and get us onto the property.”

The car slowly rolled up to a four-way stop, “You need to take a right here and then we should be able to knock on the next house on the left and talk to the owner.”

After multiple knocks on the door and peeping around the house, Alex determined that the house was abandoned. “Looks like no one has been home for quite some time – in fact, this place is next to condemnable.”

“Lucky for us,” Kara cheered half-heartedly. “Let’s make our way to the river then.”

A football field’s walk later, they were at the river. The vegetation all appeared to be normal, no fish floating belly up.

“Hmm… Looks pretty serene to me,” Alex mused.

“It really does, although I almost can’t believe it. Either way, I’m going to take samples.”

Kara set the testing kit she had brought down at the bank of the river, put on a pair of latex gloves, and then filled a vial with river water. Then she moved 10 feet and took a soil sample in a similar fashion.

Well, I knew it all along – science is boring... but at least I get to stare at a sexy lady being all boring…

“Alright, done!” Kara exclaimed. “Let’s head to the next site, it’s only about 20 minutes North of here.”

  “Excellent.”

Two more stops each like the first. No visible effects on the land. No sludge water.

Soon, Alex and Kara were back in the car working out their next move.

“Exactly how far up the river is this factory? Maybe they took the samples too far from it to properly assess the conditions or something?” Alex suggested.

“No, the plant is only a couple miles up the road here, across the river.”

“Well, we better go check that out then!” Alex put the car in drive and smiled wolfishly at Kara, her mind suddenly flashing back to the night before.

“You better quit smiling at me like that detective, it wouldn’t take much for me to be overcome with the urge to make us pull over,” Kara teasingly threatened as she tantalizingly traced her finger down Alex’s forearm.

Alex stared at Kara’s finger as it gently made its way to her elbow.

Her touch sets me on fire… My arm is burning up. What a tease.

Alex glanced up at Kara and blushed.

  ** BREH-BREH-BREH-BREH-BREH **

The car had veered off the road a bit and they were riding the rumble strip. Alex quickly jerked the car back onto the highway.

“Wow, you probably shouldn’t do that while I’m driving – we might not make it to the plant.”

Jeeeeeez… this lady is gonna be the death of me.

  Through the Woods

Ten minutes later, Alex and Kara rolled into the factory’s parking lot.

“Hey, what day is it?” Kara asked.

“Uhhh… Monday? Or Tuesday?” Alex guessed. “I dunno, it’s been a really weird week.”

  “Where the hell is everyone?”

“Let’s go see if we can find someone to fill us in.”

Kara and Alex walked around the exterior of the factory. It was completely abandoned. Alex said, “Not to be Captain Obvious here, but this fucker hasn’t been operational in years. Look at the windows, half of them have been knocked out, probably by bored kids with nothing better to do.”

“Yeah, something just isn’t right. I’m going to call my office and double check the address on this place. Just a minute.”

“Wait a minute, you better be careful who you are calling. We don’t know if the phones are tapped or if the Dick Dick has a guy on the inside… we know nothing.”

“Relax. I’m calling someone I trust completely and on their cell.” Kara pulled out her phone and spoke softly and quickly to whoever was on the other end.

A few minutes later, Kara was off the phone.

“Okay, so – the address is wrong – obviously there’s something fishy going on here,” Kara said with a raised eyebrow causing Alex to laugh.

  “Punny…”

“Yeah, so, we’re going to have to backtrack,” Kara studied the map, “We aren’t even on the right river. See, this is approximately where we are,” Kara said pointing to a spot on the map, “And these were the three sites along this river that we’re on; however, this is the approximate location of the plant in question,” Kara said stabbing the map with her finger. “We’re a good half inch from where we are supposed to be, and that’s about 30 miles.”

“Alright. Is there a quick route that we can take?”

“Absolutely, we just take this teeny highway through the woods here and we should be there in forty-five minutes or so.”

“Uh huh. No food along the way though, through the woods and all…”

“No… and I am starving. Luckily I brought some sundries from the last gas station we stopped at.”

“Oh goodie, more gas station food,” Alex bitched.

“Hey, don’t knock the spicy pickle until you try it.”

“They sell pickles at gas stations?”

“Oh yeah, the best kind. In fact, if you like pickles, I can guarantee you’re going to love this.”

  “Well, let’s go then!”

Forty-five minutes later they were outside an obviously active, chemical plant. Black smoke plumed from one of the stacks and brown grimy looking smoke oozed out another. Armed security guarded the entrance to the plant, and a ten foot tall, chain-link fence topped with razor wire surrounded the property with no trespassing signs hanging at 50 foot intervals.

“So this place is nice,” Alex murmured.

“Yeah, wanna see if the property downstream is available for purchase?” Kara shot back sarcastically.

“It’s just so weird to see this all the way out here in the middle of nowheresville. Maybe we go park a half mile down the road and go take a walk through the woods and see what we see.”

  “Yeah, maybe we do that.”

They parked, hopped out of the car, and made their way through the woods towards the river and the grotesquely out of place chemical plant. They finally ran into the factory’s fence about 200 yards from the parking lot and loading docks.

Both Alex and Kara crouched down and hid behind a tree. “So, why would a chemical plant need this fence?”

  “Safety? Privacy?” Kara suggested.

  “Yeah, but the razor wire?”

“Hey, fear-based society and all that.”

“Okay… I’ll give you that. Let’s go find this river, there seems to be a bit of a clearing along that bit of fence, and if I’m not mistaken, I think those docks on that side of the plant.”

They crept along the fence, darting from behind trees and made their way towards the clearing. The sound of water flowing nearby was heard intermittently between the loud engine and back-up warning beeps of the large equipment being used outside the factory.

Alex made it to the river first, stopped dead in her tracks and stood up all the way, “What the fuuuuuu…”

  “Holy shit!” Exclaimed Kara.

On one side of the fence fifty gallon drums were stacked five to eight high and those along the bottom were leaking a nasty, baby-shit green colored sludge. That sludge had made a pool around the stack, and that pool had made a small stream towards and into the river. The air felt thick and smelled of sulfur and ammonia and something else equally hideous.
