“I told you it’d be cold,” Ray teased, while Julia turned left to face him. “You look fantastic, though.”

“Thank you, handsome,” she winked at him. “I thought about getting a blanket, but Monica got furious.”

“Good evening, boys, and girls. Welcome,” Raul began, throwing a few glances around the crowd. “This means a lot to me and my family. It’s the first social occasion after our latest battle. To be honest with you, up ‘til a week ago, I didn’t know if I would live to see another one. You see, we were up against the biggest threat we had ever faced. But, we won this war. The Paxton pack eliminated our foes. However, we wouldn’t have made it to the forest, if it wasn’t for the lady in the front row. Please, put your hands together for Ms. Helena Lockhart,” Every bystander burst into a round of applause at the end of the Alpha’s sentence. The witch’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment. “Thank you,” he continued. “I’m sorry for this long introduction, but I felt like I had to do something for her. Now, I’d like to say a few words about the couple. Most of you know my brother very well. Motorcycle enthusiast, fearless, laid-back, and the family’s party animal. He always finds some reason to celebrate, no matter how small. When Monica told me a few stories about Julia, I realized she was the best fit for him. They have the same zest for life, the same passion for things that may look unimportant to everybody else but them. He had to handle her wackiness, but I don’t think he had to try too hard,” the Alpha teased his brother, smiling down at him. “Like I said, it’s tough to upset him. Now, it’s time for the vows. Ray?”

“Julia…” he uttered, reaching his arms towards her, palms facing downward. “My grandfather had been telling me stories about how treacherous humans can be, since I was five or six years old. He was mad at them; he insisted we never got involved with them. So, when I first met you, I said to myself: ‘Gorgeous, smart, but human. Stay away from her.’ But, when I got closer to you, I discovered that there’s much more to the humans that my late grandpa never told us. You’re all heart. You were bold enough to stay with me, even when things got desperate around here. I told you ‘you’re in danger,’ and you didn’t care. You made my heart melt and sing at the same time. I was never the same after that. You became my world; my very own, wacky world. Everything you did was a piece of magic. And I will gladly pledge my life to the girl who has enchanted me like that.”

“Ray…” she said while sucking in a deep breath, placing her hands onto his palms, tears rising up in her eyes. “Paxton was a huge surprise for me. I found good people here; folks that looked me in the eye, who made me laugh and forget my troubles. I didn’t mind that they were not entirely human. You stood out from day one: handsome; funny; polite. And, when we went out, I realized that you were not just the party animal everybody thinks you are. You were exactly what I hoped you would be; the voice of reason; the kind, trustworthy man of every girl's dreams. You shielded me from harm, even though we barely knew each other. You’ve been a ray of light in my darkness. You didn’t let me go astray. You held my hand in my darkest times. I’d be a fool to let go of that hand, and I’m no fool.”

“Very well,” Raul commented with a nod. “Dean, the symbols,” he continued, tossing a quick glance down at his brother. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a large, dark-green, velveteen box, and handed it over to his Alpha. Raul took it in his palms, sprang it open, and held it down low in front of him. Ray released Julia’s hands, and then fished into the box. He pried out a sparkling, platinum bracelet, with two wolves, facing one another, carved in the middle of it. Staring down into her eyes, he clipped the jewel around her wrist. “We are those two, mess. Honest and true to each other. Our hearts and souls are forever bound.”

“Dear God…” Julia sighed, pulling a silver ring out of the box while he held out his hand, palm facing downward. “I’m an old-fashioned girl. I want my man to have a ring on his finger, so that no one can get any ideas. With this ring, you will always carry my love with you.”

“By the power of the Alpha, I now pronounce you ‘mates.’ You may kiss each other,” Raul said, bringing a big smile to his brother’s face. At that point, a playful scream escaped Julia and she literally jumped onto him. Holding his arms out, he plucked her from the air, while she curved her own arms around his neck. He interlocked his fingers over her lower back, tilting his head down. The crowd burst into an even louder, longer round of applause. Their mouths locked in a passionate kiss, while another gust of wind whipped her hair about. The ends of her curls tickled him; he felt them on either side of his neck. At long last, Ray’s dream had come true. Every second with her in his embrace felt like a blessing to their union before his entire town and flooded his heart in a sea of joy. He belonged to her, and she belonged to him. Julia planted a swift kiss in the gap between his lips and his nose, flexing her arms muscles around him to pull him closer.

“I love you, pretty boy,” she whispered, letting her eyelids fall shut; “with all my heart and soul.”

“I love you, too, my mess,” he breathed, his heart pounding like a drum when a familiar voice was heard from the speakers.

“Boy, this is so beautiful,” said the voice. It was none other than Kate, talking through the microphone of her piano. “Too bad our girl didn’t throw any flowers. We’d learn who’d be next. In case you forgot, she grabbed my azaleas on my mating ceremony,” Roaring laughter rose above the cheers and the clapping and Julia’s face was lit up with a glorious smile. “Anyway, I’d like to play a song, not just for the happy couple, but for all of us who were lucky enough to enter this world. Monica got a lot more than a big, bad brute when she met Raul. I did, too, when I got involved with my Dean. The same thing happened to Julia. We all found more than just ‘men’ in Paxton. We found angels: strong, flamboyant, courageous men who would lay down their lives to protect us. I’d like to dedicate this to all of us. Here’s Robbie Williams ‘Angels.’”

Completing her sentence, the blonde put her fingers over the keys. A cheerful song introduction forced the applause to cease. She leaned over towards her microphone once more. The Siren’s voice sent chills down his spine, while melodious lyrics poured out of her mouth, sweeping Ray off his feet, and into the world of the heartwarming, magnificent ballad…

  “I sit and wait

Does an angel contemplate my fate?

  And do they know

  The places where we go

  When we’re gray and old

  ‘Cause I have been told

That salvation lets their wings unfold

So when I’m lying in my bed

  Thoughts running through my head

And I feel the love is dead

  I’m loving angels instead

And through it all she offers me protection

A lot of love and affection

  Whether I’m right or wrong

  And down the waterfall

  Wherever it may take me

I know that life won’t break me

When I come to call, she won’t forsake me

  I’m loving angels instead

  When I’m feeling weak

And my pain walks down a one-way street

  I look above

And I know I’ll always be blessed with love

  And as the feeling grows

She breathes flesh to my bones

  And when love is dead

  I’m loving angels instead

And through it all she offers me protection

A lot of love and affection

  Whether I’m right or wrong

  And down the waterfall

  Wherever it may take me

I know that life won’t break me

When I come to call, she won’t forsake me

  I’m loving angels instead”

The delicate dance of Kate’s fingers on the keys came to an end. She raised her gaze to meet her friend’s eyes. Ray tightened his grip and spun her, forcing more pretentious screams of her, intoxicated by the fantastic music that was still lingering in the air. Mainly though, he was drunk with emotion, the bliss that had overwhelmed him, ever since his Julia leapt onto him. It was the perfect conclusion to the dream, an ideal epilogue to this wonderful ceremony, which also served as a beginning of their life together. Ray was aching to take her with him, live with her, live for her, hold her, and cherish her for the rest of his days, because Julia was not an ordinary woman. She was the wacky girl who had dared him to go out with her: the human, who had gambled her life, and would have lost it, if Helena hadn’t put the wolf in her; the embodiment of craziness, sweetness, and innocence, in the form of a beautiful redhead; the woman of his dreams. She was his mess; his mate.
