More Than Friends, page 5
Eva chuckled. “Yeah, I think this one might be a bit much. But hey, at least we got to see how the other half lives! Ooh, but I forgot you are the other half,” she added, lightly pushing Alex on the shoulder. Alex smiled, happy to have found a friend who was more down to earth and not from the rich and famous.
They left the mansion with smiles on their faces, ready to continue their search.
At the end of the day, Eva returned to her hotel room, feeling a mix of exhaustion and satisfaction. Her day at work was productive, with her team making significant progress on the project, and spending time with Alex was great. She made sure to call Luka and Ana at night. Ana was thriving, sharing stories about her day with excitement, but Luka seemed increasingly stressed and distant, struggling to manage everything at home.
The second day brought more adventures. They visited another three houses, each with its own set of surprises. One house had a quirky layout with hidden rooms and secret passages, which made them feel like they were in a mystery novel. They spent a good half-hour exploring and laughing at the unexpected twists and turns.
At another house, they encountered a friendly cat who seemed to have claimed the property as its own. The cat followed them from room to room, meowing for attention and adding a touch of whimsy to their tour.
By the end of the second day, they were tired but happy, having shared more laughs and stories along the way. That evening, Eva’s call home was bittersweet. Ana was doing great, but Luka’s frustration was palpable. He vented about the challenges of balancing work and home life, and Eva did her best to reassure him, though she felt the strain of their separation. She couldn’t understand why Luka was struggling so much when he had plenty of time to himself. She decided to also call Ivana, as it had been quite a long time since they last spoke.
“Hi Ivana, it's been a while. How have you been?”
“Eva! It's so good to hear from you. I've been well, just busy with work. How about you?”
“I'm doing okay. Work is going well, and I've been spending time with Alex. But I wanted to talk to you about something. Luka's been really stressed lately, and I'm worried about him.”
“Oh, Eva, I'm glad you called. I've been meaning to talk to you about Luka. I've seen him at the bar quite a bit lately, hanging out with friends.”
“Really? He didn't mention that to me. He just keeps saying how overwhelmed he is with everything at home.”
“I know, and that's why I'm concerned. It seems like he's not handling things as well as he's letting on. I think you should come home as soon as you can.”
“Thanks for telling me, Ivana. I'll try to wrap things up here quickly and get back home. I appreciate your honesty.”
“Of course, Eva. Take care and let me know if you need anything.”
On the third day, they visited two more houses. The first one was almost perfect. It had a beautiful kitchen, spacious living areas, and a lovely backyard. Alex was tempted, but something didn’t feel quite right.
“I love it, but I don’t think it’s the one,” Alex said, looking around thoughtfully. “It’s missing that special something.”
Eva nodded in understanding. “We’ll know it when we find it.”
That night, Eva’s call with Luka was tense. He was overwhelmed and angry, his frustration spilling over into their conversation.
“This is all too much, Eva,” Luka snapped. “You being away is ruining everything. Our relationship is falling apart because of this.”
Eva felt a pang of guilt and helplessness. “Luka, I’m doing my best. I know it’s hard, but I need you to understand how important this project is.”
“Important? More important than us?” Luka retorted, his voice rising. “You’re not here, and everything is falling apart. Ana needs you, and so do I.”
Eva took a deep breath, trying to stay calm. “I promise I’ll find a way to make things easier, but the distance makes it complicated. Please, just hang in there a little longer.”
Luka’s silence was heavy with resentment. “I don’t know how much longer I can do this, Eva. It feels like you’ve chosen your job over your family.”
Eva’s heart ached at his words, but she knew she had to stay strong. “I haven’t chosen anything over you and Ana. I’m trying to balance everything, but I need your support.”
The call ended with a strained silence, leaving Eva feeling more isolated than ever. She knew she had to find a way to bridge the gap between her professional and personal life, but the path ahead seemed more challenging than ever.
She decided to take a few days before calling Luka again, giving herself the space and time to reflect and sort through her thoughts.
On the fourth day, they visited the final two houses. The first one was nice but didn’t stand out. However, the last house of the day took their breath away.
Nestled in a quiet cul-de-sac, the house had a cozy front porch, a small garden, and large windows that let in plenty of natural light. Alex’s eyes lit up as she took in the sight.
“This is it,” Alex said, her voice filled with excitement. “This is the kind of place I’ve been dreaming of.”
Eva smiled, feeling a sense of joy for her friend. “It’s perfect, Alex. I can see you being very happy here.”
They toured the house, imagining how Alex would decorate each room and the peaceful life she could have there. The living room was spacious yet cozy, with a fireplace that added a touch of warmth. The kitchen was modern and well-equipped, perfect for Alex’s love of cooking. The bedrooms were bright and inviting, and the garden offered a serene space for relaxation.
As they walked through the garden, Alex turned to Eva with a thoughtful expression.
“Eva, I can’t thank you enough for helping me with this,” Alex said. “You’ve made this whole process so much more enjoyable.”
“I’m glad I could be here for you,” Eva replied. “You’ve been a wonderful friend to me too. This has been a great experience.”
They found a bench in the garden and sat down, the tranquility of the surroundings making it easier for Eva to open up.
Eva took a deep breath, feeling the weight of her thoughts. “Alex, there’s something I need to share with you,” she began, her voice steady but soft. “I’ve been feeling really distant from Luka lately. It’s like we’re not connecting anymore, and it’s been hard. I dread going home because I don’t feel welcomed or loved there.”
Alex looked at her with concern. “I’m here for you, Eva. Whatever it is, we’ll figure it out together.”
Alex hugged Eva, and her warm embrace felt like it had a healing power. Eva felt a sense of relief wash over her, as if a burden had been lifted.
Eva smiled, grateful for Alex’s unwavering support. “Thank you, Alex. Just being able to talk about it helps a lot. I decided not to call Luka for a few days because I needed time to think and sort through my feelings.”
They continued to sit on the porch, the evening breeze carrying away some of Eva’s worries. The house felt like home, and both women knew they had found something special in their friendship.
Chapter 15
Alex didn’t waste any time. She signed the contract with a sense of excitement and relief, knowing this was the right decision. That very afternoon, she began moving some of her belongings into the house, filling the space with her presence and personal touches. The house, which already felt like home, now started to reflect her personality and dreams, making the new chapter in her life feel even more real and promising.
That evening, after finding the perfect house, Eva and Alex decided to celebrate. They returned to Alex’s new home, the excitement of the day still buzzing between them. The house felt warm and inviting, a blank canvas ready to be filled with memories.
They ordered takeout from a local restaurant and set up a picnic in the living room, surrounded by moving boxes and the promise of new beginnings. As they ate, they talked about their dreams and aspirations.
“Eva, have you ever thought about what you’d do if you weren’t working in software?” Alex asked, her eyes curious.
Eva smiled, taking a sip of her drink. “Sometimes. I love my job, but there are days when I dream about doing something completely different. Maybe opening a little bookstore or a café like this one.”
Alex’s eyes lit up. “That sounds amazing! I can totally see you running a charming bookstore, surrounded by books and happy customers.”
Eva laughed. “It’s a nice dream. What about you, Alex? If you could do anything, what would it be?”
Alex looked thoughtful. “I’ve always loved cooking. If I weren’t in the spotlight, I’d love to open a small restaurant. A place where people can come to enjoy good food and feel at home.”
“That sounds wonderful,” Eva said, feeling a warm connection. “Maybe one day, we can make our dreams a reality.”
As the night grew late, they moved to the porch, enjoying the cool evening breeze. The stars twinkled above, casting a serene glow over the quiet neighborhood.
“Thank you for helping me find this place,” Alex said softly. “It means a lot to me.”
“I’m glad I could be here for you,” Eva replied, her heart full of warmth.
They sat in comfortable silence for a moment, the air between them charged with unspoken feelings. Alex, without saying a word, gently touched Eva’s arm, her fingers lingering for a moment longer than usual. The touch was soft and spontaneous, a simple gesture of affection between friends.
Eva felt a warmth spread through her at the contact, and she instinctively moved a little closer, finding comfort in Alex’s presence. They both smiled, the moment feeling natural and right.
“You know,” Alex began, her voice soft, “I’ve always found it fascinating how a simple touch can convey so much.”
Eva nodded, her eyes meeting Alex’s. “It’s true. Sometimes words aren’t enough.”
Alex’s fingers gently traced a small circle on Eva’s arm, the touch sending a pleasant shiver down Eva’s spine. “I think that’s why I love cooking so much. It’s a way to show care and affection without having to say anything.”
Eva smiled, feeling a deeper connection forming. “I get that. For me, it’s reading. Getting lost in a book feels like a warm hug.”
They both laughed softly, the conversation flowing easily. The touch had bridged a gap, bringing them closer together in a way that words alone couldn’t.
“So, have you seen any good movies lately?” Alex asked, breaking the silence with a light-hearted question.
Eva’s eyes lit up. “Actually, yes! I watched this amazing thriller the other night. It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.”
Alex’s interest was piqued. “Oh, I love a good thriller. What’s it called?”
As they started discussing their favorite movies and TV shows, the tension melted away, replaced by laughter and animated conversation. They shared recommendations, debated plot twists, and bonded over their mutual love for cinema.
The evening continued with more stories and shared interests, their connection growing stronger with each passing moment. The simple touch had bridged a gap, bringing them closer together in a way that words alone couldn’t.
As the evening grew late, Eva glanced at her watch and sighed. “I should probably get going. It’s getting late.”
Alex looked at her with a hint of disappointment. “Do you really have to leave? It’s so late, and I don’t want you driving back tired.”
Eva hesitated. “I guess it is pretty late. But I don’t want to impose.”
Alex smiled warmly. “You’re not imposing at all. I have an inflatable mattress. It might not be the most luxurious, but it will be fun. We can have a little sleepover.”
Eva laughed. “A sleepover, huh? It’s been a while since I’ve had one of those.”
“Come on, stay,” Alex urged. “We can talk more, maybe watch a movie. It’ll be like old times, even though we haven’t known each other that long.”
Eva felt a surge of warmth at Alex’s invitation. “Alright, you convinced me. A sleepover it is.”
They set up the inflatable mattress in the living room, laughing as they tried to get it just right. Once it was ready, they grabbed some blankets and pillows, making it as cozy as possible.
“This is actually pretty comfortable,” Eva said, settling in.
“See? I told you it would be fun,” Alex replied, lying down next to her.
They spent the next few hours talking about everything and anything—movies, books, their dreams, and their fears. The conversation flowed easily, and they found themselves sharing more than they had with anyone else in a long time.
As the night wore on, their voices grew softer, and the pauses between their words longer. Eventually, they both drifted off to sleep, feeling a sense of peace and contentment.
The next morning, Eva woke up feeling surprisingly refreshed. She realized she was nestled in Alex’s embrace, the warmth and comfort of the moment making her smile. The sun was just beginning to peek through the windows, casting a warm glow over the room. She looked over at Alex, who was still sleeping soundly, and felt a deep sense of connection.
For the first time in a long while, Eva felt truly at ease. She looked at Alex, taking in her dark hair spread across the pillow and her peaceful expression as she slept. Eva gently touched Alex, removing a strand of hair from her face and feeling the softness of her skin. She was surprised at how attractive Alex was, noticing details she hadn't before.
Chapter 16
Alex woke up to the smell of something delicious wafting through the house. She stretched and smiled, realizing Eva was already up and making breakfast. The sight of Eva bustling around the kitchen brought a sense of warmth and comfort. Alex could definitely get used to this.
“Good morning,” Alex said, her voice still a bit groggy as she walked into the kitchen.
“Morning!” Eva replied cheerfully. “I hope you don’t mind, but I thought I’d make us some breakfast. I found some eggs and bread, so I whipped up some scrambled eggs and toast.”
Alex’s eyes lit up. “That sounds perfect. Thank you, Eva. You didn’t have to do this.”
Eva shrugged with a smile. “I wanted to. Besides, it’s the least I can do after you let me crash here last night.”
Alex poured herself a cup of coffee and took a seat at the kitchen table. “Well, I appreciate it. This is a nice way to start the day.”
They chatted lightly as they ate, discussing their plans for the day and reminiscing about the fun they had house hunting. The conversation flowed easily, filled with laughter and shared stories.
Just as they were finishing up breakfast, Eva’s phone buzzed with a call. She glanced at the screen and saw it was from Emily, her assistant.
“Looks like Emily needs something,” Eva said, answering the call.
“Morning, Eva! I’m so sorry to intrude on your day off, but we have a meeting with the client at 10 AM to discuss the latest updates. Can you join the call from where you are?” Emily asked apologetically.
Eva sighed softly. “Looks like work is calling. I have a meeting with the client at 10 AM. I should probably get ready for that.”
Alex nodded understandingly. “Of course. Duty calls. But thank you for the lovely breakfast. It was a great way to start the day.”
Eva smiled. “I’m glad you enjoyed it. We’ll catch up more later, okay?”
“Definitely,” Alex replied, giving Eva a warm smile as she started to clear the table.
Eva headed to her room to prepare for the meeting. As she was getting ready, she glanced at her phone and realized she had left it on mute. There were several missed calls and messages from her mother.
Her heart raced as she opened the most recent message: “Eva, it’s urgent. Call me as soon as you get this.”
Eva’s hands trembled slightly as she dialed her mother’s number. She picked up almost immediately.
“Mama, what’s going on? Is everything okay?” Eva asked, her voice filled with concern.
“It’s Luka,” her mother said, her voice strained. “He had a car accident. He’s in the hospital, in intensive care.”
Eva’s heart sank. “Oh my God, how is he? What happened?”
“He has a few broken ribs and a concussion,” her mother replied. “The doctors are taking care of him, but he’s in a lot of pain. Ana is alright; she’s with me. We’re both worried, but we’re managing.”
Eva felt a wave of guilt and helplessness. “I’m so sorry, Mama. I wish I could be there with you all. How is Ana handling it?”
“She’s scared but being very brave,” her mother said. “She misses you and keeps asking when you’ll be home.”
Eva took a deep breath, trying to steady her emotions. “Thank you for telling me. I’ll try to wrap things up here as quickly as I can and come home.”
“Just keep us updated, okay?” her mother said, her tone softening slightly. “Luka needs to hear from you.”
“I will,” Eva promised. “Give Ana a hug from me and tell her I love her.”
“I will,” her mother said. “Take care, Eva.”
As the call ended, Eva took a deep breath, trying to steady her emotions. She knew she had to focus on the meeting ahead, but her thoughts were with Luka. She quickly sent a message to Emily, explaining the situation and asking if they could reschedule the meeting.
Emily responded promptly: “Of course, Eva. Family comes first. Take care of what you need to, and we’ll handle things here.”
Eva felt a surge of gratitude for Emily’s understanding. She quickly packed her things, ready to head back to the hotel and make arrangements to return home as soon as possible.
Eva called her mother, but there was no answer. Panic started to set in as her mind raced through the worst-case scenarios. She felt a deep sense of guilt for not being at home, especially after having such a wonderful time with Alex. The contrast between her current happiness and the crisis back home was almost too much to bear.
