She settled her on Angel’s stomach, and the baby immediately turned her face toward Angel’s skin.

A hand settled on my shoulder, and I glanced back to see Scath there. His gaze held mine for a long moment before he looked at the scene in the bedroom.

“She seems fine,” Cassie said. “Her lungs sound clear, and her pulse is strong, which is good. We’ll give you both a moment, and then Julie can wash her while we take care of the rest.”

  “There’s more?” Shax asked.

  “The afterbirth,” Cassie said.

Scath tugged me away from the room and down the stairs.

Garrett watched us. “Are they both okay?”

“Yeah,” I said. “They seem fine. I mean, Angel’s going to need some serious recovery time, but they’re good.”

He nodded and sat on the clean cushion. “Might not want to go outside yet,” he said. “You’ll be bombarded with questions. I think Shax wanted to make the announcement.”

Scath picked me up and sat in a chair with me in his lap.

“I understand why females fear having babies,” he said, holding me close. “We don’t need to have any.”

I made a choked sound. “It’s a little late for that, Scath. I’m pregnant. I just took the test this morning.”

“Are you afraid?” he asked softly.

I leaned into his hold, soaking up his warmth. “A little. But I have nine months of pampering to help me forget about it.”

There were footsteps on the stairs, and we looked up at Shax, who was carrying a wrapped bundle.

  “Come look, Garrett,” he said.

Garrett went to his niece and frowned.

“Mya showed me her spots,” I said. “One is the size of a half-dollar now. Eden has a few, too, that are growing. Cassie said they meant immunity. That means the baby should be immune, too, right?”

Shax nodded, not looking away from the baby.

Garrett’s eyes went wide. “Did you see that? When she opened her eyes?”

“Her eyes are a mix of mine and Angel’s,” Shax said. “One blue and one green and yellow.”

Garret and I shared a look. I didn’t know what it meant that a baby who, by all accounts, wasn’t Shax’s biological baby had some of his attributes. So instead, I focused on what I did know.

The baby was healthy and alert, and Angel had survived the birth.

That meant I’d probably survive mine too.

The future was coming, whether I was ready or not. And it no longer sounded as terrifying as I’d thought it had.

I looked up at Scath as Shax and Garrett headed for the door.

“Are you ready to go home?” I asked.

  He kissed my forehead.

“Yes. Let’s go home. There is still a wall you haven’t tried.”

I shook my head. “That’s what got me into this mess.”

“Not a mess,” he said. “No matter what our baby looks like, it will be ours, and we will love it.”

He was right. We would. Unconditionally, just like I knew Shax and Angel, and everyone else in Tolerance, would love hers.

  AUTHOR’S NOTE

Where to start? Let’s see… I was working on Demon Defeat, plotting away, when this little side story started nibbling at my mind. I tried to ignore it. Who has time for a side novella when there’s a pre-order deadline for the series finale? Definitely not me.

Unfortunately, my easily distracted self did not cooperate with the big-picture game plan. I told myself it would be a super short story. It’s not. I told myself it wouldn’t take me long. A week, maybe two tops. It took way longer. And I told myself it was okay to take a short detour because I would have plenty of time to finish Demon Defeat on time.

Demon Defeat was half-written and six days overdue to my editor at this point.

So I told myself it’ll be okay. The fans truly wanted more fey, and if I squeezed in another novella, they wouldn’t be horribly angry if I had to push back Demon Defeat’s release by a few weeks.

I didn’t just push back the release…I woefully underestimated how much story there was to tell and had to split the finale into two parts. Which is why Angel’s childbirth is here. Don’t worry! You’ll see more of the gang in Demon Defeat: Part 2!

Hopefully, you found this side story and the delays it caused worthwhile. I can’t wait to share the conclusion of the Resurrection Chronicles with you.

  Until next time, happy reading!
