When I see the wild steer we’ve drawn, my heart sinks. It’ll be near impossible to get a fast time without a different technique than planned.

“Listen, I have to do a throw we didn’t practice, you do yours the fast way like we did yesterday—ignore what I do, it’ll look strange so trust me.”

I wink at him and back my horse into the box. I open up my loop to very large and reset it on my shoulder while I chat up my horse to get him on the muscle. I see Nash’s eyes go wide. I scowl at him to get him back on task.

I nod for the gate—out flies that crazy steer and cuts off to the right putting too much distance between us.

Bastard! I’m right on his ass standing in my stirrups leaning forward. I let the big loop sail through the air landing on the horns.

Now the trick is to get all that slack pulled out of my rope and dallied tight before I lose the steer. This is where my great horse does better than any other. Dash lays hard to the offside jerking all the slack in for my dally and sets up the heels for Nash. I’m crazy over this unbelievable horse.

We’re done and the timer buzzes. I hold what little breath I have. I wait, but I don’t look at the clock.

When the crowd comes up on their feet screaming, I know we did it.

“Just because of that move we’re still in the game. But when I see you do that kind of thing, I get the worst hard on.” Nash’s face beams.

“I’ll try to do a few more then.” I cut him a side eye grinning to match the new moon.

“Do that.” He laughs, leans over to pat my thigh.

David’s voice rings out from the rail and I tip my hat to him. My brother is flying high.

Now it’s down to two teams, Speed and us. We’ve kept the horses warm for the 20-minute wait.

“What do you feel like for dinner tonight?” I ask Nash. “I think something easy.”

I never think about the upcoming run when I’m down to the wire.

“Maybe we’ll skip dinner and go straight to desert.” Nash says, staring me down, his eyes dark, squinted slightly, a husky sound, really a growl. I think he plans to eat me alive.

  Yes, Please.

“Dinner at midnight?” I offer up.

“You do know how to make me burn woman.”

The announcer calls our numbers. “That’s us. Let’s go cowboy.”

We’ve drawn a steady calf. Thanks be for favors.

“We’ll go for another fast run. We’re good unless it gets totally crazy and I fall off my horse.”

Our time is excellent and we’re good with it. We move up to the arena fence to watch Speed’s run. I know they’ll be faster and smooth, I’ve watched the man for years.

Speed’s loop is over the horns his dally is started. No! That can’t be. The steer cuts back and runs head long into the horse’s front legs and trips them.

Speed and his horse are down on the ground along with the steer, legs wrapped up in the rope.

“I can’t even believe what I just saw, Nash.”

  “What the hell?”

The horse is okay and so is Speed, they’re back on their feet with no injury. A zero time for the run.

The announcer calls Nash and I out as first place winners, Speed third place with the new team at second place.

We meet them as they come out of the arena. Speed is smiles.

“See Flash, you never know your luck in the big city.”

“I have no words, my friend. Never seen anything like that before. I’m truly sorry.”

“Don’t be. It’s all in the game.” He drops his arm on my shoulder gives me a buddy hug.

We gather up with my brother after the awards to celebrate. I think David might have a heart attack.

“So Nash, see what I mean about her?” David’s excited as he talks. “She’s much faster than me and has the luck of the Irish. Can’t thank the two of you enough.” He puts his hand out to shake with his buddy and gives me a loving squeeze.

“I’m glad we won for you but I’m just sick over what happened to Speed. I can’t even believe that.” We sit for a while to visit with friends and rehash the event when RJ strolls up to our table.

“You’re much too skilled. I should have roped with you then I could’ve crawled into that pussy…it would —”

Nash’s hand is tight around RJ’s throat and he’s punching him before I know what happened. The man gurgles, gasping for breath as he goes down to the ground. David tries to pull Nash off. That didn’t stop him.

“Nash! Let go while he can still breath.” He doesn’t let go and I get around to him.

“He’s not worth jail, Nash. I need you here with me.” Slowly he releases his hold on RJ’s throat but grabs him again and yanks him up close to his face.

“If you like your little dick attached where it is, you best stay clear of her. Get my meaning?” RJ’s eyes are wide, full of fear. I think he finally has the message. It’s scary how strong Nash is…it still hasn’t sunk in.

“Come on baby.” I feel his hand on my back as we make our way back to the trailer, load the horses and drive out toward home.

“That man must have a serious death wish, he just can’t let it go.” Nash doesn’t sound upset, only irritated.

“He’s a person who can’t accept the fact he lost.”

“He best stay away from you.”

After we get the horses down and a short visit again with David, we go back to Nash’s ranch. With the rush and pressure of the competition over, I’m excited to have alone time with him. It’s an evening by the pond with wine as we talk, kiss, laugh.

“Baby, I don’t see how I can let you leave for Arizona. I need you with me.”

“Arizona is where I live but I don’t like it being so far.”

“What stage are you at with the horses in training?”

“All are finished except one mare and your colt. I haven’t talked to David about it as yet. And you have to decide on your little guy. I’d take very good care of him at my place.”

He doesn’t answer right away, looks down at the ground with a twist to his mouth. The kind that says I need to solve a problem.

“When do you plan to leave?”

“Two or three days. If I do, I can make my next rodeo.”

“All those bastards want is to get their hands on you, damn it. Me here, you at a rodeo a thousand miles away, anything could happen to you.” He pulls me in closer to his side lifts my chin up to look at me. “I care too much about you to let you be that far away.”

I’m taken by surprise, really. His emotions do show but I didn’t think he cared so much.

“Rodeo is a large part of how I make my money and it’s my only skill. Please don’ t think I can easily leave you here, I feel stronger for you than you might realize. It’s right on the line of scary.”

He kisses me gently, but it goes to fire soon enough, his heat presses into me upping my need to be closer. It’s enough to make a me nuts.

“Flash, I’m making the trip with you to Arizona and stay for a few days. I can’t be away from you yet.”

“Your company would make the ride a lot more fun. And I’d like having you at my place.”

“Good because I need you close.” He scoops me up in his arms carries me inside. “Too many clothes,” he says as he peels them off. “…have to taste what’s mine.”

When his tongue glides along my sex, my body comes to life like thunder and lightning rolling across the night sky. So good, so very good. His mummers vibrate through me as he licks, slow then fast, sucks me into his warm mouth, then tongues deep inside me till I scream when my arousal floods in a hard orgasm. My entire body jerks, shakes from the pure thrill of his touch. When he moves his arm to hold my hips down and continues to take me, it’s pure torture.

“I love how this pussy taste like wildflower honey.”

  “...what you’re doing, so good.”

And he showed me over and over all night. We make love, we fuck like crazy, we lay close. It’s difficult to have a clear mind when Nash is able to make me explode with such intensity.

I’ve fallen in love with him lock, stock, and barrel. What I don’t know is what to do about it with such distance between us. All I can do for now is take what he offers, give what I can, and enjoy the ride while I see where it’s going.

  Chapter 18

  Nash

Our drive back to Arizona was one of the best trips I’ve made. How could it not be sitting there next to her beautiful body. We took our time, made an overnight stop and I made love to her under the stars.

Her ranch is pristine, as I knew it would be. After I’ve seen her place I know it’ll be hard to get her to leave it. It’s easy to see she treats her people well as they’re excited to have her home. Rosa had a Mexican feast laid out with the best food I’ve tasted, that’s a big statement. The woman can cook.

To see Juan’s protectiveness of Flash makes me feel slightly better about her being away from me but not enough. It’s what I tell myself to make it easier to leave her here… at least till I can get her with me in Texas. I patted him on the shoulder when he told me what would happen if I hurt her.

Her ranch is well protected with security and it’s far from town. Maybe she should keep this place and we can go between the two to keep it up in a good way. That idea might help her make the decision to come with me. I’ll do most anything to get her back to Texas.

“What do you think? This is a good layover place for the short turn around events if we run a season together. Texas is too far.”

“We’d never have time to get back to Odessa unless there was a week in between.”

“You’ve done a superior job on this ranch. Far past nice, and highly efficient. We could get back here often from the tour. I think we can run both operations.”

My time here with her is a man’s dream. We’ve worked horses, taken long rides into the mountains, and spent our nights wrapped up in each other’s arms. She lets me claim her over and over, she wants me to, and I can’t keep my mind, or my hands off her.

I’m so damn crazy over this woman it frightens me in a certain way and pisses me off in another. What if I can’t get her to be mine? That’s not an option, I have to win her.

There’s no way I can imagine a day without her, but I only have one more week here. To leave her will grind me down to powder.

Tonight is the night I’ll ask her to marry me and slip the engagement ring on her hand. Thoughts of her refusal try to get into my head, but I push them off.

I had Rosa make a candlelight dinner to be served at the garbanzo to make it romantic. I’ve come to realize how important romance is to Flash. She’s a complex mix of tough cowgirl and erotic lover and I crave her both ways.

“Let’s take our Margaritas over by the fire. I like the way the flames throw shadows across your pretty face. Here baby, put this wrap around your shoulders, this desert is cooler at night than I expected.”

“I’d say cold even, but you’ll keep me warm.” She glances up at me with those beautiful sexy eyes of hers.

“Yes ma’am, I will.” We settle on the lounger with her between my legs leaned back into me. “This is one of my favorite ways to hold you.”

  “Why this way?”

“I can touch you everywhere, massage your tits, play in your wet pussy, smell your hair, kiss your neck, whisper a secret to you.”

“I’ll take all of the above, please.”

“Are you going to ask the secret?” Tasting the dewy skin of her shoulder has me into a full erection. She can feel it pressed into her backside.

“Of course, tell me all of them.”

“The first and most important secret is I love you so much that I have to take you to be my wife.” She gasps, her body tenses as she turns to look at me. “Baby, let me love you, take care of you. I have to be with you, Flash.”

I slip the ring on her before she answers. She says yes over and over through grins and tears as I squeeze her into me with all the needs I feel.

“You beautiful Angel, I crave you in ways you can’t dream of.”

“I wasn’t at all sure you cared enough for me.”

“I thought the same thing about you. Then one day while I watched you from a distance I knew for certain we belong together, not because of the great sex, which it is, but I felt the inside of who you are, your heart.”

She holds up her hand to look at the ring, admiring it, and looks at me.

“Oh Nash, it’s so unique, completely different than what I’ve seen. It’s beautiful! I think I’m in shock.”

Her laugh is soft with a sound of disbelief as she takes in the details of her ring, eyes shining and her mouth curled at the corners in a grin of wonder, her eyes still moist with tears. My worry of her not liking it is gone.

“Nash, when did you have time to get this…it’s not out of a store case, that I’m sure of.”

“The jeweler and I started on the design a couple days after you got to Texas.”

  “But we had just met.”

“Correct. But I knew I loved you.” I pull her to me, and my hand finds it way to her wetness. Her breath sucks in with a groan when my fingers slide into her. “I knew at the start I couldn’t let you go.”

I kiss her neck, smell her ripe desire, and pleasure her through a sweet orgasm as my own need builds past containment.

When I stand us up, still behind her, she knows my intentions and she leans forward to brace on the rail of the gazebo, she repeats my name into the night air when I pierce into her tight pussy.

I never had any idea how desire could fill me up this way, after all, it never had before. Only with Flash. I take her beauty into me, fucking her brutally hard and deliciously slow until we’re near collapse and I’m holding her up.

“Time to take you inside.” I scoop her up in my arms and carry her to bed where we made love most of the night.

About daylight I woke spooned into her warm curves with a raging need in my heart and a hard on to match. Can’t help but wonder how she does that to me. Her breath is even, and I think she’s asleep but then she tilts her perfect ass up into me with a little purr. What she can do to me with her voice, it’s an all-out sin. When my fingers reach down a groan leaves me.

  “You wild little pussy.”

She wiggles in answer and I slide my rock-hard cock into the most perfect woman alive.

“Sleepy good morning to you pretty woman.”

“Mornin’ to the man I love.” She holds up her hand looking at her ring.

“I’m glad to hear those sweet words. I love you Flash.”

The Arizona mornings are colorful enough, but the air is already sticky and it’s not even 7 am. Such a contrast from last night’s cool.

“Ready to pull out the colt? I’d like to do him first,” She has a smile that says she’s happy. My phone rings and interprets us.

“Let me catch this call first.”

  “Ellis here.”

“Nash, glad I got hold of you. Are you in a place you can talk freely?” Luther, the deputy sheriff asked.

“I can be in a second,” I walk out of the barn away from the people and give her a signal to wait for one minute.

“What’s up?” I have no idea what would be important enough for him to call me.

“Nash, I don’t know how to go about this so I’ll tell you the facts as I know them but I’d say you need to get back here as fast as you can. This isn’t something you can take care of from a distance.”

  “Okay, you have my attention.”

“We got a call from a lady in Dallas, Iris Brady, who says her daughter, Teri, died a few months ago. Her problem is she had to take her daughters child to care for it. And she can’t do it any longer, she’s quite old and not in good health.”

“The names don’t ring a bell — how am I connected to this?”

“She says you’re the father of her daughter’s child. She’s asking you to take the kid.”

Can’t say how long the silence was but I came back to the present when I heard Luther repeat my name a few times.

“Yes, I’m here. Luther, I’ll call my lawyer when we hang up so he can get all the information from you. I’ll be home tomorrow morning. I’d appreciate it if this stayed under wraps until we see what the deal is.”

I have no idea who these people are. And I haven’t heard a thing about a child, ever. I made sure of that by always using a condom. How can this happen? When I finally meet the one meant for me this pops up.

The call to my lawyer is short and to the point. He’ll get on it right now. All I can think of is I’ll certainly lose Flash over this. This has to be fixable somehow. I cannot lose her.

“Your call must not have been good news.” I catch her up in my arms, kiss her while my mind goes off on a million bad play outs of this.

“Problems at the ranch and I have to get back over there. Not what I’m happy about.”

“How can I help?” She’s such a sweetheart, always trying to help.

“I wish you could but there’s not much you can do. If I get with my lawyer soon enough, I might be able to come back and finish my visit.”

“When do you need to leave?” Her face is sad with a faint thin line she tries to bring to a smile. Looks like she wants to show me she’s okay. But she isn’t.

“If one of the guys can take me to the airport in about 30 minutes.”

“I’ll take you.” She’s crushed, so am I. We hug and I snuggle into her. The knot in my stomach works overtime and I have a sick feeling this could be the last good times for a while, if not permanently.

“You’ll call me and let me know how you’re doing, right?” She slides her arms around my waist as I pull her into me.

“Don’t worry baby. Just the same old things that come with a family, ranch and land. You know how it is.”

It took all the willpower I had to walk across that tarmac and get on the plane…my feet just wouldn’t move forward more than a few steps without a look back at her. I’m positive I saw her try to hide tears…
