Out in Nowhere, page 25
DB, Anna and Nic, secret weapons! Or perhaps not so secret!
I spent a lot of time in hospitals writing this book, while my dad was very ill, and I want to acknowledge the doctors who saved him, the nurses who cared for him and the specialists who continue to work with him—thank you for the extra time. And the insight into the inner workings of a hospital. I’m sure you all will appear in a book further down the track.
To Val for the strawberry jam!
To you, the reader—I love that we have been on this journey for twenty-four books. Dave has been alongside us for most of that time. We make a good team—you, Dave and I. Thank you for continuing to love him as much as I do.

But the trip doesn’t play out that way.

When Sassi Stapleton receives a middle-of-the-night phone call to tell her that her beloved grandmother is unwell, she quickly puts her job on hold, packs her ute and sets off on the long drive home, knowing her grandfather will need her.
Less than an hour away from Sassi’s home town, Barker, she swerves to miss a roo and her car rolls down an embankment. By the time Sassi is found, her grandmother has already passed away.
On the other side of the world, Sassi’s estranged mother, Amber, receives a similar call and shocks the whole family when she flies home from South Africa.
With everyone under the same roof, tensions escalate as Amber’s secrecy and odd behaviour become unsettling. What is she really doing at home with a father she’s barely spoken to since she left years ago? And will Amber and Sassi ever be able to reconnect?

Mia, a newly graduated constable, is assigned to the small country town of Broad River. And as certain as she is about her ability to do the job, on day one she’s already in conflict with colleagues who believe that women shouldn’t be coppers.
It takes the shine off coming home, where her grandmother, Clara, is in the early stages of dementia. Mia is accustomed to their conversations often not quite making sense, but when Clara gives Mia a mysterious key and hints at veiled family secrets, Mia isn’t sure what she should believe.
In the midst of all this, a local child goes missing and Mia is confined to barracks. When Detective Dave Burrows realises she has skills that could be put to use, Mia’s career takes a new turn, and she must decide which road to walk down.
