  Chapter 1

The crisp leaves danced across my coarse fur as I raced through the forest. My muscles pulsed with a pleasurable ache, and I let out a laugh-like bark as I powered my body to move faster and further away from the werecats who were trying their best to catch up with me.

I knew I had to try and get away from them, but given that they were mountain lions, I also knew they could have been hiding in the branches above me. I wished I had eyes in the back of my head, and if only I had Benji or one of my omegas beside me to keep watch over my blind spot.

But I was all by myself, literally a lone wolf, so I needed to find a way out of this mess.

The werecats had taken anosmiacs, so I couldn’t use my heightened sense of smell to locate them, and the only advantage I had was my brilliant eyesight and hearing. As long as the cats didn’t see me first, then I could try and dodge them to put more distance between us.

But then, all of a sudden, a mountain lion appeared in front of me, and I skidded to a stop before I crashed into the hissing beast.

The mountain lion slashed the air with his white paw, and I took a couple steps back before I turned on my pa

ws and rushed through the trees to my left.

My opponent was barely a couple yards behind me, I knew this for certain, so I had to try and find a way to put more distance and time between us. If I could make it to the edge of the forest and onto the country road, then I knew I would be safe. But the road was at least ten minutes away from me, and from the speed the werecat ran at, I wasn’t sure if I was going to make it that far.

Then a terrifying roar shattered the air around me as the mountain lion let out its frustrations and anger. It was quickly followed by a painful sting in my shoulder blades, and within seconds, I found myself on the rough ground with the lion firmly on my back.

I let out my own vicious howl to show I meant business, and then I used all my strength to throw the lion off me, and I jumped onto all fours to get a better view of everything.

The werecat’s cyan eyes were full of rage, and he rolled up his lips as he bared his pointed white teeth. The mountain lion continued to hiss and roar, and he tried his best to act like the king of the jungle, but I was bigger and stronger than the puny cat.

But then a second mountain lion came into the clearing, followed quickly by a third.

I was completely surrounded, and I knew there were more lions in the forest, and all of them would have been heading in my direction.

  I was fucked.

But I had to find a way out of the situation, and there was always a way out, I just needed to find it.

Suddenly, one of the mountain lions plodded closer toward the other two, which left the perfect opening in the trees for me to run through. It was also in the direction of the road, and that was where my car was parked. All I had to do was get to the car, shift, and drive away before they had the chance to stop me.

But I didn’t want to make my moves seem that obvious, so I slowly edged toward the opening and kept my eyes firmly set on the mountain lions as I did so.

My opponents kept flicking their heads back and forth, like they were silently conversing with each other, and I knew that was my chance. If they were too busy talking, then I could try and get away while their heads were turned.

I halted for a second as I waited for the right moment to run, and then as soon as the mountain lions looked away, I used all my strength and energy to power up my muscles as I raced through the trees.

The mountain lions continued to roar behind me, and they must have been irritated that I’d managed to get away. But now that I was alone again, I took the opportunity to shift into my more terrifying hybrid form.

But that was also the only way I could communicate with my island werecats.

My body stretched and pulled as I grew taller. My snout vanished, my hands and feet became elongated and perilously clawed, and I let out a violent shiver as everything fell back into place.

“That was so good!” I yelled into the deep forest as I returned to the clearing, but my gravelly timbre made the words sound ominous.

The three werecats had also shifted into their human forms, and they sat huddled in a group with hands covering their dicks.

They still weren’t overly confident being completely naked in front of me.

“Thank you, Alpha,” one of the mountain lions, Jackson, replied.

“Noah, dude, excellent work back there.” I smiled. “I literally had no idea where you were, and then you suddenly appeared out of nowhere. It was amazing.”

“Oh, th-thank you, Alpha.” Noah ducked his head, and a mop of brown hair covered his eyes. “I remembered what you told us last time, about keeping low and out of sight instead of pouncing at every chance, so I decided to test it out.”

“Well, it worked,” I chuckled. “I don’t know if you saw me skidding, but that rarely happens.”

This was only my second proper training session with these island werecats, and so far, I was pretty impressed. The stealth group I had created to seek out the werefoxes were amazing, and I constantly used them for patrolling and security, but I had three islands full of betas, and I wanted to put them all to good use.

Hence why I started these training sessions in the first place.

Spencer, Wren, Daniel, Coral, Cameron, and Finn were the best at sneaking around and spying on my enemies. But I knew if I could train these betas and make them as effective as they could possibly be, then I could keep the stealth group for a more silent approach, like they had with the foxes.

“However…” I smirked. “Marley, c’mon, that was such an easy escape.”

“I know, I’m sorry,” Marley huffed. “I knew the second I walked away that you were going to run through those trees. I should have stayed where I was.”

“But, hey, at least you know for next time.” I shrugged. “But one thing I’d add is try to be careful when you’re talking to each other. It’s fine that I got away, because this is just a training session, but imagine if I was an actual opponent?”

“Yeah, I get what you mean.” Jackson nodded. “We took our eyes off you too many times, and that’s what gave you the advantage.”

“Exactly,” I replied. “Communication is key, I’m sure you know that, but that doesn’t mean you have to keep looking at each other. What about when you were training with Aiden? What did he tell you to do?”

“Aiden had more… interesting techniques,” Noah chuckled. “He was more into relentlessly attacking and killing, instead of hiding and pouncing at the opportune moment.”

“Yeah, he focused on the best ways to kill our opponents, instead of hiding out of sight as we tracked them,” Jackson added.

“Quick, brutal kills that scared the ever-loving hell out of our enemies,” Marley said with a nod. “The more blood, the better.

“Okay, well, we can work with that.” I shrugged. “I’m fine with that approach, too, but stealth has proven to be too useful in the past for us to ignore that kind of training. I need well-rounded fighters for any situation. You already seem to be picking things up pretty quickly, so you just need to remember what I taught you today.”

Four other werecats then wandered into the clearing, and they curled up behind Noah, Jackson, and Marley as they looked at me with their deep, cyan eyes.

“I was just telling them how great you all were,” I said to the mountain lions. “But where were you guys? I never saw you as I was running. Which is a great thing, don’t get me wrong, but you need to make sure you can see me, too.”

One of the lions shifted, and she brushed out her long ginger hair as she covered her chest with one arm.

“I’m sorry, Jesse, we completely lost you.” Abigail dropped her gaze slightly. “We even followed your scent, but you were too far away for us to follow you properly.”

“That’s okay.” I smiled at the nervous beta. “This is why I wanted you guys to take anosmiacs before we started. If this was a real fight, you would have taken the pills beforehand, so the opponents wouldn’t have been able to follow your scent. But they don’t work as well on me, so I need to train you more in tracking a certain scent. You need to learn how to follow it, and let the aromas guide you to where you need to be. Does that all make sense?”

My audience nodded their heads, and some of them smiled.

“We won’t cover that today, because we need to work on staying out of sight before you pounce,” I continued. “But next time we could make a game out of it. I could hide somewhere, and you need to follow my scent alone to try and find me.”

  “That sounds good,” Marley replied.

“And what about the other betas?” Jackson asked. “Are you going to do the same with them, too?”

“Oh, yeah.” I nodded. “My plan is to have everyone on the same level. However, due to how many of you live on the islands, I won’t be able to do everything by myself, so I’ll get my captains to assist me in that.”

“Brenden sure seemed to know what he was doing last time,” Abigail mumbled.

“Yeah, and Spencer and Daniel have always been more like leaders anyway,” Noah said. “I’m sure those three will be able to teach us just as well as you do, Jesse.”

“Thanks,” I replied. “I choose my captains for a reason.”

After we had finished attacking the werefoxes a few weeks ago, I started to think more about my beta captains, especially after my talk with Mordaine about all the money I had to my name.

Spencer and Daniel had really impressed me with their work in the stealth missions, and they had always been at the top of my list for potential captains. Brenden from Gray’s old pack was an obvious choice, and I thought about including Marco and Kristina, too, but I didn’t want to rush into anything. I needed to make the right choices, especially when it came down to the safety of my entire pack, so I’d make those changes once I knew for certain.
