Chapter one
The annoying beeping sound of my alarm wakes me up, I sit up rubbing my eyes placing my hand on the alarm to shut it up. I go to lay back down but my door knocks, my twin brother Marley knows me too well, I would've just fallen back to sleep. I groan pulling myself out of bed but land on the floor, why can't school start in the afternoon?! I remain on the floor for a few minutes before finally getting up, beginning to get ready.
Once I was dressed I make my way downstairs, my brother Marley, like my annoying alarm clock, was being loud and obnoxious. He was blabbing on about something stupid, bits of toast falling out of his mouth as he spoke. I drop my bag onto the floor, falling into my seat myself. I get a cloth and start to push the bread crumbs back onto his side of the table, does this dude think is he's Hansel and Gretel or something? Once his bread crumb trail was safely on his side of the table, I place my head down resting it on said table.
"I mean the ref didn't have the right to give him a red card," Marley says, continuing to talk about useless things that no one cares about.
"That's lovely dear, Miya breakfast" my mother smiles, I shake my head with my eyes closed, it was way too early to eat "breakfast is the most important meal of the day" she continues, I groan finally lifting my head where she places a plate of eggs in front of me.
I thank her with a smile, while she turns going back to the fridge to grab something. Marley lifts his plate where I dump the eggs on, I never eat breakfast but she always insists on making me some, so she doesn't feel bad I give them to Marley, he never seems to complain as it's more food for him.
"I best get going, see you both after school" she smiles, making her way over to the front door, we both wave as she leaves the house.
"I've got another game today, it's all leading up to the big one at the end of the year," Marley says, I just nod a yawn escaping my lips, it was all gibberish to me especially in the morning. "You know people at school call you a nerd, but nerds like school" he smirks, he knew how much I hated being called a nerd, just because I'm good at a few subjects I'm labelled as a nerd.
"Laugh it up bro, pepper doesn't sit well with you and mum put so much on my eggs, let's hope you don't crap your pants while kicking the ball" I smile, he looks down at the eggs then back at me.
I rise out of my seat picking my bag up, I send him a final smirk before walking out the house, I always win. Taking a look around my little neighbourhood, everyone was busily getting on with their mornings, driving to work, going to school normal everyday things. I sigh beginning to walk down the path, as I reach the end I'm nearly tackled. My friend Lily bear hugging me, I smile hugging back a little it still being way too early.
"Aren't you full of the joys of spring today," she smiles sarcastically, I just roll my eyes starting my journey to school. "Hey lighten up, oh I've just heard from Jack, Charlie Wilson is back from suspension and guess what English class he's in now?" She says, I look at her and sigh once again in annoyance.
"English is annoying as it is, did they really have to put that guy in the mix?" I ask, she just shrugs as I'm once again nearly tackled to the floor, do people think I'm playing rugby or something?!
This time it was my other friend James, we all live on the same street so we just join each other as we walk. He proceeded to tell us what Lily just told me about Charlie, I didn't have the energy to tell him to stop so I just let him continue.
They ended up having a huge conversation about it the whole journey, they'd stop to ask my opinion where I just offer a quick nod of the head. As we walk through the gate I thought my suffering would be over, but the bell ringing interacts my suffering has only just begun.
Chapter Two
After morning form, James and I start our journey to maths, it being the subject I was good at makes people think I enjoy it, just because I'm good at it doesn't mean I like it! I slowly make my way into the classroom sitting at my seat at the back of the class, James sat on one side of me and Tom, one of Charlie Wilson's friends, sat on the other side. Charlie and his friends are said to be one of the meanest people going, but Tom was actually nice well to me, he didn't like James. I pull my books out waiting for the teacher to start talking, just as Tom takes his seat beside me.
"Morning Miya still stuck with him" he smiles, but points over to James who sat beside me. "You know if you want me to get rid of him, I will," he says, I just laugh shaking my head as James spoke up.
"You and what army?" he mumbles, trying to stick up for himself, I don't know how this whole hatred thing started, but it's still going strong!
"You don't wanna know" Tom smirks, I shake my head sitting up so they couldn't see each other, hoping that would stop the arguments maybe just for even 10 minutes.
"Miss Turner, may I see you after class?" The teacher asks, I just nod a little confused I haven't done anything wrong.
"Oh Miya, what have you done?" Tom asks, I just give him a look shaking my head once again. "Did you cheat on a test? Or key his car?" he asks, I laugh once again shaking my head at him.
"How did you go from cheating on a test, to keying his car?" I ask, he just shrugs his shoulders also laughing "do I look like a girl who would do anything like that?" I ask, James went to speak but Tom holds his finger up stopping him.
"I don't know, you know when some person does a really bad thing, people always say they never thought they'd do anything like that" he points out, I just sigh shaking my head looking back at the front of the class.
"Don't worry Miya, it's probably nothing" James reassures me, but Tom just shuts him down immediately.
"If it was nothing why would he wanna talk to her? Think before you speak James" Tom tells him, I laugh at the two before getting back to my work.
The lesson drags on, the whole time Tom and James were going back and forth about random stuff. I wave goodbye to James and eventually Tom, once everyone left Mr Jones finally looks up from his desk.
"I'm just gonna get right to it cause I have another class, you are one of my best students which would make you perfect to be a tutor, would you be interested in torturing another one of my pupils? He's in your year" he asks, okay that was a lot of information all at one time.
That's gonna mean more work! I mean I'm good at maths but that doesn't mean I want more work to deal with! But then again this could bring my grade higher, which would benefit me more in the long run and it probably won't be for long, maybe a few hour sessions.
"Okay" I smile, he thanks me telling me I had to come to his room tomorrow at lunch, I wave goodbye and make my way to English, another subject I love, note the sarcasm.
I finally reach my English class, which annoyingly was on the opposite side of the school, whoever made my timetable hates me! Once I walk in the whole class turns to look at me, giving me attention that I didn't want or need. I was about to tell the teacher why I was late, but she spoke before I could.
"Tom already told me about Mr Jones, just take your seat" she smiles, my eyes soon dart to Tom who sends me a wink, but then slowly drift to the person beside him, Charlie Wilson.
He held my gaze for a second also sending me a wink, I look down making my way over to my chair, which was unfortunately directly in front of his. Once I sit down everyone else gets back to what they were doing, but I felt eyes burning holes in my back.
"So Miya, what did Mr Jones want?" Tom's voice asks, I turn around sending him a weird look, I make sure my eyes remained on him and not Charlie.
"It was nothing" is all I say, before I could turn back around again Tom speaks up, I mean I like how he's nice to me but not when he's near his terrifying friend.
"Don't tell me I'm gonna have to tell you what I told James if it was nothing he wouldn't want to talk to you" he smiles, I just roll my eyes which look at Charlie for a second, whose eyes were staring at me so intently.
"Just about some tutoring thing, it's not that exciting" I finally tell him, he just shakes his head as Charlie starts to speak.
"It kept me entertained," he says, my eyes move to his where I send him a little smile and finally get to turn around.
Where the burning holes in my back wouldn't go out, I even heard him ask Tom what our deal was. I for one don't like where this is going.
Chapter Three
The lesson seemed like it was going on forever, Tom would start to make conversation with me the whole time, which wasn't new but it meant I kept having to make eye contact with Charlie. I mean it wasn't a bad sight to see but still not someone I wanted to interact with, we've all heard the stories about what he and his friends do. I mean they're still only young, just imagine what else they can get up to in their lives, I just want to stay away from that at all costs.
The lesson just wrapped up and I was making my way out the room with Lily when my arm is grabbed and I'm held back. Lily continues to walk and t
"I need a quick word with Miya, so go away," Tom tells her, he still had a strong grip on my arm which prevented me from moving.
Lily seems to get nervous looking at me, I send her help with my eyes where she slowly nods. She starts to make our way away from the door and down the hall, leaving me in the doorway with Tom.
"We're buddies right?" He asks, I give him a look slowly nodding, I didn't know at this point if it was a good thing me agreeing with him "well my other good friend has taken a liking to you, come on you probably felt his eyes on you the entire lesson" he says, which confirmed he was talking about Charlie Wilson.
I was about to tell him I didn't want to mingle with his friend but said friend was starting to make his way over causing Tom to smile.
"Charlie, meet my good friend Miya, Miya meet my other good friend Charlie" Tom smiles, pointing between us as Charlie comes to a stop beside me "I'll leave you two to get to know each other" Tom smiles, taking steps backwards leaving Charlie and me alone.
"So Miya, are you new around here? I haven't seen you around" he asks, wow that shows how successful my attempts to avoid him have been.
"Oh no, I've been here since year 7" I smile, I pull my bag tighter around my arm as he looks at me "I tend to stay away from any attention, I like to blend in and cause no drama" I explain, looking down at the ground, talking to him is really causing some drama.
"Well walking in the class like that didn't help your case" he smiles, I just nod starting to walk out of the class where he follows me "well I'm sorry I haven't noticed you so far, I tend to draw attention to myself which makes it hard to blend in" he smiles, I nod laughing a little as we went, wait am I getting along with Charlie Wilson?!
I turn to look at him standing by the doorway, he stood with his hands in his pockets smiling. We all have to wear a uniform but he wasn't, I think the teachers just want him in school so they probably don't want to kick up a fuzz about what he wears. He wore black jeans, with a loose white top and a black jacket coat thing over the top, he actually looked quite hot.
Before we could talk anymore, I hear a familiar voice start to shout down the corridor. Marley was marching towards us, his friends and Lily close behind.
"Know him?" Charlie asks me, I turn to look at him then whip my head back around to Marley.
"He's my twin brother," I tell him, just as Marley makes it fully over to us where he pulls me behind him, it sucked a little cause I was kind of enjoying that conversation.
"Stay away from my sister" is all he says before he takes ahold of my arm and drags me away.
Before we turn the corner I turn around to look at Charlie, who makes eye contact with me, I send him a little smile before the wall blocks my view of him. Marley doesn't release me from his grip until we get outside, where he turns with his arms crossed.
"Why in the hell were you talking to that guy?!" He asks annoyed, his friends stand near him while Lily was beside me.
"It's not like I asked to speak to him, he was the one that stopped me in the hall and started the conversation, which was actually okay so you had no reason to come in and drag me away," I say, also crossing my arms to match the way he was standing.
He looks at me like I'm crazy running his hand through his hair, yeah I also couldn't believe that I was okay having a conversation with Charlie Wilson, but when we were talking he seemed like a nice guy.
"You've heard all the stories about what he and his mates do, so you're okay with talking with the biggest gangster there is!" He begins to shout, I look around to see people were starting to look our way.
"You know I don't have to answer to you" is all I say, I begin to walk away Lily behind me when someone else joins our conversation.
"That's it Miya, stand up for yourself" I hear Charlie say, I turn back around to see him and his group of friends stood by the door.
"Didn't you hear what I told you back there? Stay away from my sister, before I have to show you how to do that" Marley growls, Charlie just laughs his hands still in his pockets.
"Alright whatever your name is, I don't listen to wannabe hard men, if I wanna talk to your sister I will, was and am" Charlie smirks, I just look to Marley who smiles shaking his head.
"Listen to this," he says, before anyone could move he swings a punch to Charlie's face.
"Finally, talking in my language" Charlie mutters, before he too throws a punch at Marley's face which sends him flying to the ground.
They begin to have a full fight on the ground, Charlie had the upper hand mostly with Marley getting a few hits in. I look to Marley's friends who were just watching the whole thing unfold, I send them a look but they just shake their heads, I thought football players in school were meant to be tough.
I walk over to stop them but I'm grabbed by one of Charlie's friends, I didn't have a clue who it was so I begin to fight back.
"Hold still," he says, I look around to see a glass plate sat one of the tables beside us, without thinking I pick it up and smash it over the guys head, immediately he lets me go and it even stops the two fightings on the floor.
"Now, we're all gonna stop or a few more plates are gonna be smashed off a few more heads" I shout, Charlie was the first to listen to me rising to his feet.
Marley slowly picks himself up, his face was pretty bad with blood everywhere. I walk over taking his hand pulling him away, once we were out of sight I wrap my arms around him.
"Don't you ever do something like that again" I say, he holds me tightly without speaking, but it didn't matter I just needed to know he was okay.
Chapter Four
It was the next morning after all the drama yesterday, we both went home before school ended, where Marley had to try and explain what happened to our confused mother, let's just say she wasn't happy. I finish getting ready for school when I get a knock at the door, I pick my school bag up walking over, I open it to reveal Marley stood there with a plate of toast in his hand.
"Call this a peace offering" he awkwardly smiles, I send him a little smile back taking the toast "does this mean you forgive me?" He asks, but I shake my head walking past him "what I gave you toast!" He says surprised, following me.
"You can give me all the toast you want, but you still went along and tried to start beef with the toughest guy in school!" I exclaim, turning around to look at him "we've all heard the stories of the horrible things they've done, so you go along and try to fight him!" I shout while turning back around walking down the stairs.
"Oh come on I can handle myself, why are you getting so hung up about this?" He asks, when I don't stop he takes my arm, stopping me himself.
"Because maybe I don't want my brother being taken from me like dad!" I shout, he looks at me for a second then sighs, he goes to take my hand but I move "no, just leave me alone for a while, I'm going to school" I say, walking to the door leaving the house.
I start making my way down the road heading for school, I didn't know him fighting would cause me this much emotion. When we were little, our dad was killed in a robbery, he was just minding his own business one night when a group of thugs went over and attacked him. He was the best person and dad anyone could ask for, but he was taken from us by people like Charlie and his friends, I don't wanna lose my brother the same way.
