  ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Thank you to my brilliant agent, Lucy Luck, my wonderful editor Allegra Le Fanu, and my fabulous managing editor, Lauren Whybrow, who have all been so generous with their ideas and enthusiasm for this book.

Thank you to SJ Forder, copy-editor supreme, for seeing both the wood and the trees.

Thank you to Marsha Swan, brave typesetter.

Thank you to Emily Faccini for her glorious maps.

Thank you to David Mann for his gorgeous cover design.

Thank you to Adam Marek for reading, listening, and talking about it all, so many times.

Thank you to Daniel Greenwood and Chris Schüler for sharing knowledge and maps of the wood with me.

Thank you to the Great North Wood, especially the fragments now known as Sydenham Hill and Dulwich Woods, for providing a beloved roost for my imagination.

Many other books informed this one, in different ways. Especially useful were: Norwood and Dulwich: Past and Present by Allan Galer; The Crystal Palace is on Fire! by Alison Edwards and Keith Wyncoll; The Life of Samuel Matthews, the Norwood Hermit; The Life of Miss Ann Catley; Kalendarium Hortense by John Evelyn; Nature is my Hobby by C. V. A. Adams; Canterbury Christmas; Comus libretto by John Dalton. With thanks also to William Blake, John Keats, Thomas Gray, Vaughan Williams and Thomas Hardy.

  A NOTE ON THE AUTHOR

Zoe Gilbert’s debut novel Folk was shortlisted for the Dylan Thomas Prize and named an Observer Book of the Year. Folk was also adapted for BBC Radio 4 and is the basis for a forthcoming song cycle. She is the winner of the Costa Short Story Award 2014, and her work has appeared in anthologies and journals in the UK and internationally. She is a Senior Visiting Fellow at the University of Suffolk English department, and is the co-founder of London Lit Lab, where she teaches and mentors writers. Zoe Gilbert lives on the coast in Kent.

  A NOTE ON THE TYPE

The text of this book is set in Electra, a serif typeface created by American type designer William Addison Dwiggins, and released by Linotype in 1935. Dwiggins designed Electra to be a modern roman-type letter, and he chose the name Electra to suggest electricity and crisp modernity. Electra was digitised in 1994 by Alex Kaczun for Linotype and Adobe.
