I was born in the primordial fires of creation. I Fell from Heaven. I killed God. I was offered the throne of Hell and I turned it down. Now I was overworked and underpaid, working out of a falling-down building in a bad part of town. I was one slip away from spending some quality time in a jail cell. If the monsters didn’t get me first.
I smiled to myself. In all my millennia of existence, I couldn’t remember a time I’d been more satisfied.
I pulled in outside my office. Father Keller’s car was parked behind me. I looked over my shoulder and gave him a friendly wave.
I was about to climb out of the car when my phone rang. I pulled it out and held it to my ear.
“Is this Nic Ward?” a hesitant voice asked. “Someone gave me your card. I… I heard you help people. People who need justice no one can give them. People who have problems that are… more than human.”
“That’s me.” I leaned back in my seat and stretched out my legs as I settled in to listen. “What seems to be the problem?”
