Chapter 1: Growing Pains
Denzel Brown felt the early evening sun beam through the school bus window. It felt warm and comfortable on his face. The gentle rocking of the bus, as it swerved through the country roads, complemented the warmth pretty well.
Denzel’s house was the last stop on the school bus.
The furthest from school.
A good time to nap, Denzel thought.
"Denzel,” A voice called from the seat behind him.
He wasn't going to turn around. He refused.
"Denzel."
Nope.
Nuh-uh.
There was no way she was going to get him this time.
"Denzeeeel!"
She could whisper all she wanted. There was no way, absolutely no way, no way in the whole, entire world that he was going to—
"Deeeeeeeeeeennnnnnzzzzeeee—"
Denzel whipped around in his seat, eyes wide, teeth clenched. "What do you-"
Pari Patel’s finger pressed against the tip of his nose, and he froze, staring at her blankly. Pari's smile stretched across the entirety of her face, light brown skin crinkling near her eyes, and she kept her hand outstretched for a minute before leaning in.
"Got your nose,” She whispered, and she and Aiden Smith, who were sitting together, instantly dissolved into giggles.
The school bus rumbled across another suburban street, the early evening sun heating the plastic-leather material of their seats. Denzel had started sitting in the back of the bus ever since he had turned thirteen, and he couldn't hide his displeasure when Aiden and Pari decided to join him in the back.
Aiden and Pari were still twelve, still in sixth grade, while Denzel had graduated to seventh. Most days Denzel spent his rides home ignoring the other two as they goofed around in the seat behind him.
Now that Denzel was a teenager, he couldn’t be seen hanging out with a bunch of pre-teens.
Denzel slumped against the bus seat again and groaned, glancing around to check if anybody had seen. A couple of the other teenagers were grinning in his direction, and with a jolt of fear he caught one's eye; Brody Baker, a muscled ox of a boy with slick brown hair and tattered blue jeans was smirking at him, elbowing his friends with a mocking nod.
No doubt they were talking about how Denzel still hangs out with kids.
"Den?" Aiden popped over the side of the seat and brushed shaggy hair from his eyes. He looked concerned. "What's the matter?"
"I didn't actually take your nose," Pari added. She joined Aiden in leaning over Denzel, reaching her hand up again. "Here, I'll give it back!"
Denzel swatted her hand away, casting her a vicious glare. He straightened up, ignoring the snickers from the other students, and pulled a schoolbook and a pencil out from the pocket in his backpack.
"Knock it off, guys." He said, opening the textbook to a random page. "I don't wanna play your dumb kid games."
Aiden paused, then returned meekly to his seat. His arms folded tightly across his stomach as he glared at the back of Denzel's head.
"They're not dumb." Aiden mumbled, more to himself than anyone.
He should have been used to Denzel's reactions by now. It had been a few months—Denzel's thirteenth birthday—since Aiden had noticed how he changed.
The three of them had been friends since they were kids. Denzel and Aiden's families had known each other for years, so the two of them grew up together in their small, secluded neighborhood.
Even though Denzel was only a year older, Aiden always looked up to him in a sense; his parents were both successful and let Aiden play around in their multi-story home, and all signs pointed to Denzel following in their footsteps.
Denzel was smart and confident, a real 'take charge' attitude, his parents said. He had train models he built himself in his room and would let Aiden help him glue the tiny wood pieces onto large, intimidating plane sculptures.
In return, Aiden got Denzel into Minecraft, the one thing Aiden thought he was good at. Denzel latched onto the rules and mechanics far faster than Aiden's other friends and seemed nimble with the controls. Together the two of them grew a tight bond that, for a while, they believed nothing could break.
Pari's family moved from India in time for elementary school. Aiden remembered the both of them watching a vibrant little girl run around his neighbor's front yard, climbing the trees, chasing the dog, laughing at her parents as they begged for her to stop.
The first day the three of them spoke they ended up deep in the forest behind their neighborhood, with Pari leading the charge like a war general. They hopped t
When they took Pari home and watched her parents scold her for running off, all she did was grin and ask when the boys were coming over again. She was wild, a petal in the breeze, and became Denzel and Aiden's friend almost by her force of will.
Lately, though, Denzel hadn't had the time for their games anymore. He didn't come over as often as he used to, so Pari and Aiden had gotten used to exploring the woods alone, and when they did see him, he would sneer at their attempts to play and go off to read a book or finish some puzzle.
Pari didn't seem to mind too much; she found it hilarious that Denzel was trying so hard to be one of the older kids. She often told him to start carrying around a cane if he was going to act so old.
Aiden just wished their friend would come back.
"Denzel."
Denzel cringed at the sound of his name and tried to look as casually as possible to the seat beside him. Brody was grinning fiendishly at him, along with his pack of nimrods that followed him around like puppies.
"You gonna go home and play in your crib today or something?" Brody could barely hold back his laughter.
Denzel felt his neck burn in embarrassment, but Pari jumped up, leaning towards Brody with a smile.
"Nah." She said. "We're going into the woods behind my house."
Brody cocked a brow. The pack behind him snickered. "What's a bunch of babies like you doing in the woods?"
"Looking for witches!" She beamed wider, gesturing her hand like she was wielding a wand. "Everyone knows that witches live in the forest. Deep in the trees, where the ground turns to marsh and mushrooms line the pathways to the witches' huts."
Pari's eye caught Aiden knowingly, and he sat up as well, shrugging his shoulders and nodding.
"First we're gonna have to get past the zombies that roam the land. Nobody knows how they got there, but some say that the witches curse those who sneak inside the forest at night, looking for their witch's treasure!" Aiden stated.
And, again, the two of them fell over in laughter.
“Aren’t you a little old to be playing pretend, Denny boy?” Brody cast a glance at Denzel before turning back to his friends, chuckling and pointing at the trio as the bus rode on.
Pari watched Denzel slump further into his seat, and her laughter died, replaced by a thinly pressed mouth. She squinted at him thoughtfully, snapped her fingers, and took her phone out, bending down to whisper in Aiden's ear.
A slow grin spread over Aiden's face and he nodded, taking out his phone as well and starting to load the server to their Minecraft: Pocket Edition world.
"D'you know where we are?"
- Denzel Brown
Chapter 2: Pocket Edition
Minecraft was one of the few games they could all play together. Years back Aiden had invited them onto the world he'd made himself and they spent hours exploring the vast world it gave them—until Pari discovered how to work TNT.
Many, many, many, explosions later, Aiden was forced to start a new world soon after.
They had been working on their new survival multiplayer server for a few weeks and still hadn't gotten very far, mainly because Pari was still learning and Denzel wouldn't help. Pari poked the top of Denzel's head again, logging into the world herself.
"Hey, join the server and help us take over this tower," She said.
There was a Pillager tower not too far from where they had spawned and the pair of them had been trying to take it out for days, to minimal success. Denzel glared at her from over his shoulder.
"Minecraft’s for babies," He replied.
Pari shrugged and tossed a smirk at Aiden as they began to play.
For a while, they sat in silence, the chatter of the other children droning over the vibrations of the tires. Aiden and Pari sat close to one another, laughter every so often escaping their bubble, and eventually, Pari gasped theatrically, nudging Aiden in the arm.
"Hey, you got a diamond pickaxe!"
"Yep!" Aiden grinned. "I use it whenever my sword breaks. It works pretty well as a weapon!"
He trailed his eyes over to Denzel's head. He could see his ear pricking up a little, but he kept quiet and pushed his head deeper into his book.
"Watch out for those crossbow bolts," Pari continued, eyes locked on Denzel as well. "Hey, be careful! You're totally out of food."
"No, I'm not! I've got this zombie flesh I can eat and heal right up."
Denzel turned his head a little at that. Aiden was gleeful to see the look of disbelief on his face as he scoffed at them, half-straining to look at Aiden’s phone.
"What, are you dumb?" He asked. Aiden hardly repressed a laugh. "You can't be serious, Aiden."
"What's wrong, Den?" Pari cocked her head innocently. "We're just playing."
"No, it's just you can’t eat—" Denzel looked bloated as he forced his words down like a frog had leapt into his mouth and got stuck in his throat. "Never mind."
He turned back around, and Pari glanced at Aiden with an encouraging smirk.
"Alright, whatever. Hey, look, Aiden, an Enderman!"
"Oh, cool! Y'know, if you give a flower to one of those, they can fight things for you."
"Really?" Pari gasped again, and the two of them saw Denzel fidgeting frantically in front of them.
"Yeah! And if you click on one when it's holding a block, you can take it for yourself! You can even give it other kinds of blocks to hold, and I'll go around and—"
"Ugh!" The pair looked up with smiles of triumph on their face as Denzel dug his phone out of his backpack. "I can't listen to this. You can't eat zombie flesh to get health back, using a diamond pickaxe as a weapon is a terrible idea, and Endermen don't build or fight for you! You two are useless. Here, fine, let me help."
Though it didn't happen often, when the three of them got together, their teamwork started to shine.
Pari was always at the front, keeping a shield between her and the enemies and charging with a stack of TNT in her inventory.
Aiden preferred to keep to the sides with his double swords, but when he wasn't helping cut down bad guys he was almost always in the mine or cutting down trees for their bases.
Denzel was the archer and organizer. Whenever they started a new world, he would insist on crafting a map and searching the area, then made sure that all of their resources and crafting stations were easy to get to.
They were a good group, and it showed as they all began to besiege the tower.
Denzel caught a shift to his side and saw Brody leaning across the walkway, peering his thick head over Denzel's shoulder to spy at the game.
"Are you playing blocks with your friends, Denny?" He asked with a grin. He reached over, closer than comfortable, and jabbed Denzel's arm holding the phone. "Make sure you get the alphabet blocks. I hear they're teaching how to read today in kindergarten."
"Buzz off, Baker." Pari piped up from behind them. "Go pull a wagon or whatever you do for fun you big cow."
Brody glared at her, still sitting at the edge of his seat to loom over Denzel's shoulder, but stayed quiet. Denzel gave her a relieved smile as the trio continued to play.
With Denzel's help, they took down the Pillagers stationed at the top of the tower and focused their attack on the main entryway.
The grey-skinned pillagers were pouring out of it and riding over the tops of the hills, coming at them at all sides. Aiden started to engage, leading them out into the field, while Pari snuck around and set her dynamite trap.
The base of the tower blasted apart, leaving a nice, easy entryway for the three.
"Aiden, switch out," Pari ran to her friend's side and started to slash at the Pillagers while Aiden pulled back, turning and running toward the tower entrance.
