  Chapter 1

As Snowy Redwine smirked and passed Jason the ball, he could scarcely believe they were playing basketball on a court in a base on the gosh darn moon. Being a Chroma Ranger was awesome! Jason caught the ball easily; it had been a solid pass.

Snowy’s dark eyes locked onto his as she brushed sweaty black hair from her face and bared her white teeth. “No way you’re matching that shot, Caulfield!”

Snowy wore a tight black tank top and black gym shorts, which weren’t a regulation Chroma Corps uniform but were suitable for b-ball in the gym. As she spun around, raised her arms, and started twerking in triumph, he couldn't help but be a little distracted by her antics—just as she intended.

Snowy was hoping to distract him with her goofing around before his next shot, but her efforts would be in vain. Jason was far too skilled a basketball player to be swayed by his fellow ranger’s nubile charms.

Now that their game of HORSE was almost over, Jason’s warrior’s heart burned with the spirit of competition. He and Snowy were the last two participants. Each ranger had taken turns shooting baskets and then challenged the others to sink a ball from the same spot.

Anyone who couldn’t match the previous shooter’s shot received one of the letters in HORSE. Players were out once they got all five. As a former varsity basketball player, Jason had easily held his own, but he was pleased with the progress of the others.

All four girls remained eager for any opportunity to engage in wholesome team-building activities. They had all told him privately how much they wanted to play with his balls. Their game today was Jason’s way of fulfilling all their requests at once. Admittedly, this might not have been exactly what they had in mind.

But Jason never missed a chance for a rousing session of b-ball!

Aura had gone out first after missing every shot, followed by Kitty. Beau had lasted until she missed a bank shot due to Snowy shouting “HORSE!” just before Beau lobbed a bomb from downtown. While Snowy’s unexpected outburst was a bit of dirty pool, there were no rules against it.

As Jason walked to the spot Snowy had vacated behind the midcourt line, he focused on the basket and his goal. He tuned out Snowy’s taunting and even Kitty’s cheering. He took a deep breath and lobbed his shot without a care in the world.

As the basketball dropped through the hoop with a satisfying swish, a perfect replay of Snowy’s earlier shot, she stomped her squeaky black sneaker and threw up her hands.

“No way! How are you so amazing all the time?”

From the sideline, Beau chortled and tossed back her short blue hair. “Who’s the horse now, batface?”

“Enjoy your view from the loser line, shark bait! He hasn’t beaten me yet!”

Kitty laughed merrily beside Beau. “Oh, she’s extra spicy today! Goooo Jason!”

As Beau and Kitty whooped from the sidelines, Jason enjoyed the sight of his two curvy teammates cheering him on. Beau had paired tight blue biker shorts with a tiny blue crop top, while Kitty wore a snug white shirt and a pink skirt. As the girls jumped up and down, he appreciated their enthusiasm for competition… and their bouncing.

When Jason’s gaze met Kitty’s bright blue eyes, she bounced from cheer pose to pose. Though she didn’t have any pom-poms, Jason could easily imagine them. Kitty’s lovely white ears perked up as she cheered for him.

“Ja-son, Ja-son, he’s our man! If he can’t have us, no one can!”

Aura stood demurely on the sideline, wearing a fitted green T-shirt and a little pair of green gym shorts. As Jason glanced at her, her cute antenna wiggled. She looked down and blushed bright red.

So far, Jason had taken it easy on the girls so they could all enjoy the game. But now that it was just him and Snowy, it was time to play for real. He walked away from the midcourt line as the girls watched in increasing disbelief. At the far end of the court, he turned around.

“Going to sink it off the backboard from right here. Ready, girls?”

Snowy watched him warily from the other end of the court. “There’s no way you can make that shot.”

Jason started the ball spinning on the tip of one finger. “You sure about that?”

Energized by his confident display, Kitty leaned forward and wolf-whistled. “We believe in you, baby! Sink that ball!”

“That’s right!” Beau shouted eagerly. “Right in the basketball hole!”

Jason breathed deeply. He focused. The whole world faded around him. And just before he lobbed his shot, the moon base’s Monster Invasion alarm blared.

The ball left his hand as his body instinctively reacted to the annoying loud noise. Thanks to the blaring and unexpected distraction, his shot hit the backboard one inch to the left and missed the net.

Snowy, who had been startled like everyone else, pointed at him and grinned. “HORS!”

Jason had just acquired his fourth of five letters, leaving him tied with Snowy, who still had one letter to go. Yet they couldn’t finish their rousing game of HORSE when the cosmos was in danger! Regretfully, Jason looked around at his squad.

“B-ball time’s over, gang. The cosmos needs us. Everyone to Goodbrain’s lab, pronto!”

Jason led by example, dashing toward the door. He already knew the girls would follow him. As the leader of the Chroma Corps, and after all their rousing and sexy adventures, all four of his fellow rangers loved and trusted him.

Just as he loved and trusted his girls.

As he dashed into the hallway of the moon base, Beau growled, “Fiddledicks! The game ended before we could play with Jason.”

“How do you mean?” Aura asked plaintively. “We just finished playing with him.”

Beau chortled as Jason ran down the hall. “Oh, wisp. You are adorable sometimes.”

With a playful yowl, Kitty zoomed past him on all fours. Not only did he love seeing Kitty push her Catatonian body to its fullest, but running behind her as her skirt flared gave him glimpses of her fluffy white tail.

Jason loved her tail. Kitty knew that, too, which was why she ran directly in front of him. She was so considerate when it came to offering him a pleasant view! Incidentally, but entirely unrelated, he also loved her butt.

Kitty and Jason were the first two rangers to reach Doctor Goodbrain’s lab, though huffing, puffing, and stomping told him the others were close behind. Jason was relieved to see the massive doors were already open. Goodbrain was expecting them.

As they entered the lab from which they launched all their adventures, Jason took in the familiar sight.

The lab remained the size of a high school auditorium, though it wasn’t filled with bleachers. Big round lights shone from above. Sci-fi consoles with flashing lights lined the sides of the room, and six huge tubes of bubbling water hung from the walls.

When he’d first arrived in this lab months ago, Jason had recognized five of the tube colors: red, pink, blue, black, and green. There had also been a yellow tube and no yellow ranger, which Jason had wondered about until a few days ago.

That was before he and the other rangers retrieved the long-lost Gold Chroma Crystal. While they didn’t yet know who would bond with it, they did now know that the last tube was gold, not yellow. One day, they would add a Gold Ranger to the squad.

Doctor Goodbrain, a massive luminescent brain that floated, bubbled, and glowed in a tank at the center of the room, waited patiently for them to assemble. Jason now understood Goodbrain to be an advanced alien computer that interfaced with the Watchers of All Worlds, assigned missions to the Chroma Corps, and offered fatherly advice when asked.

While Goodbrain wasn’t always the most sensitive of father figures, he was certainly among the smartest. Soon, Jason, Kitty, Beau, Aura, and Snowy were all gathered, breathless, waiting to learn about the next cosmos-spanning threat. Everyone looked to Jason.

He thumped both hands onto his hips, puffed out his chest, and struck his most heroic pose. “We’re here, doc! What’s the emergency?”

Doctor Goodbrain bubbled ominously. “Thank you for assembling so quickly, rangers. I regret pulling you away from your rousing game of ball play, but this matter could not wait.”

Kitty stomped one white sneaker. “Ooh, is it Lord Evilface? Is he back?”

“You defeated Lord Evilface last season, Kitty. He will not be returning in this one. That would be narratively unfulfilling.”

Beau spoke up next. “Why the alarm, then? Was there some natural disaster on a friendly planet, doc? Do we need to warp in and save the day?”

“No disasters, Chroma Blue. Our purpose today is to finalize our account of your recent campaign against Lord Evilface for the archives maintained by the Watchers of All Worlds. Once you verbally acknowledge this accounting of events, we will enter it into posterity.”

All the girls groaned at being called in for a report, but Jason was relieved that no one walked out of the room in disgust. He was eager to learn what Doctor Goodbrain had recorded from their thrilling space adventures. A highlight reel of them kicking Muddle and monster butt would be a great way to encourage people to join the Corps!

Snowy put her hands on her hips and dismissively blew back a puff of dark hair. It also made her look super hot—in a bad girl kind of way.

“Why do we have to listen to what we already know? We were there.”

“This report is not just for you, Chroma Black. It is a summary for the Watchers of All Worlds. Some watchers were busy observing other worlds during your recent adventures, and even those who witnessed your exploits at the time have observed additional events since. By recounting your last set of adventures for all, we can ensure the watchers enjoy your next adventure to the fullest.”

Jason nodded approvingly. “So this report is like a recap, Doc? Like when you tune into a show after a long break and some guy says, ‘Last time, on Morphinizin’ Chroma Corps’?”

“That is the purpose of this highly necessary and important meeting, Chroma Red.”

Jason nodded approvingly. “We sure wouldn’t want any watchers to be confused.”

Doctor Goodbrain bubbled with enthusiasm and began his report. “Several months ago, powerful monsters launched simultaneous attacks on the civilized worlds of the cosmos. In the aftermath of the attacks, the Watchers of All Worlds confirmed that Lord Evilface, an ancient enemy of the cosmos, had created these monsters and decided to be evil again. Given the major threat Evilface and his monsters presented, the watchers decided to reform the Chroma Corps.”

Jason listened eagerly. He knew all this since Kitty had told him, but he still wanted to show he was paying attention. He needed to set a good example for the other rangers and any Watchers of All Worlds.

  Goodbrain continued recounting past events.

“To recruit new rangers, the watchers launched five Chroma Pods—red, pink, blue, black, and green—toward planets where ranger candidates had been detected. The red pod landed in Parktown on Earth, where it was discovered by Tanya Lee, secret henchwoman of Lord Evilface, and Jason Caulfield, the karate champion who was dating her at the time.”

Jason winced as he remembered the night he’d learned that the woman he’d dated for six months was actually a secret sexy spider alien working for an evil mastermind. Sensing his discomfort, Kitty wrapped her arms around him and lovingly stroked his hair.

  That helped.

As Jason relaxed and enjoyed Kitty’s wholesome affections, Goodbrain continued his not-at-all-repetitive and entirely necessary recounting of past events.

“Despite overwhelming odds and Tanya Lee’s transformation into the sensual Tyrantulady, henchwoman of Lord Evilface, Jason seized the red Chroma Crystal. He morphed for the first time and defeated Tyrantulady and her Muddles, though he wouldn’t learn the true nature of the crystal that night.”

Jason nodded. “That sure was a weird night, Doc. I had no idea what was going on!”

“The next ranger called into action was Kitty Miao Miao, a Catatonian karate expert and junior yarn ball champion. I tasked her with traveling to planet Earth to recruit Jason, whom I’d judged to be the best candidate to lead the reformed Chroma Corps. Kitty located Jason at a karate tournament and, using her sultry Catatonian wiles, convinced him to come to the moon base.

Still stroking Jason’s hair, Kitty started rubbing his back. “That’s right, Doc! You didn’t waste any time putting me to work!” She leaned close and grinned as she pressed her warm lips to Jason’s ear. “And you didn’t either, baby.”

Jason eased her away and stared at her. “If the night Tanya betrayed me was the worst, the day I met you all was the best. Without you, I’d never have learned about good aliens, Chroma Crystals, or the power of love and friendship. I’m so glad you found me.”

Kitty’s ears flattened as she blushed bright red at his praise. “Aww! You know just what to say to make a kitty blush.” She leaned in and pressed her hot pink lips against his ear. “You are getting so many Chroma kissies tonight.”

Before Jason could ask for more details, Snowy, who had been watching Kitty with increasingly visible jealousy, decided to spoil the lovely mood.

“Yarn ball’s a game for babies.”

With a little yowl, Kitty grabbed Jason’s hair hard enough to hurt and hissed at Snowy. “Yarn ball’s not just for babies. There are adult leagues!”

“Yeah, but you only played in the baby bracket. Am I wrong?”

“I won all my trophies in the Kitten League! Kittens aren’t babies.”

Before Jason could intervene in their impending argument, Beau grabbed Snowy from behind and gave the dark-haired Battarangian woman a playful noogie. This caused Snowy to flail and squawk in indignation. As Beau trapped Snowy in a vice of her muscular arms, the shark girl bared her sharp teeth.

“Keep that bitchy energy in check, bat brain, or we might have Jason spank you again.”

As Snowy’s stocking-clad thighs rubbed together and her pale face turned crimson, everyone, including Jason, knew Beau’s threat had actually aroused her. Jason would deal with his squad’s carnal needs later; they had a report to finish!

Jason focused on Goodbrain. “What does the report say happened next, doc?”

“After Jason and Kitty bonded over zoomies, Kitty traveled to planet Aqualung to recruit Beau Magnifique, the blue ranger, while Jason went to planet Goolodon to recruit Aura Esper, the green ranger. Meanwhile, OmegaBot retrieved Snowy Redwine, the black ranger.”

Snowy scoffed. “Have I never mentioned how racist that is?”

Goodbrain’s lights flickered. “I do not understand.”

“Just because I have black hair, wear all black, and live on a world that’s black and most everything on my planet is black doesn’t mean you should make me the black ranger. By that logic, you might as well have made Kitty the piss ranger since Catatonia is piss-colored.”

Kitty would have leapt across the room to tear out Snowy’s hair if Jason hadn’t snatched her hand. “It’s champagne-colored, you webbed-up tampon!”

As Aura’s antenna perked up, she eeped. “Language!” She glanced worriedly at Jason. “You know how uncomfortable it makes him whenever we mention feminine products.”

Jason was a bit uncomfortable, but he hadn’t wanted to speak up. He was grateful Aura had done it for him. Living with four girls was the most awesome life he could imagine, but maintaining a bit of mystery about their personal hygiene was good for mental health.

  Especially Jason’s.

Kitty guiltily settled back into Jason’s lap. “Oh, I’m sorry, baby! I forgot. Next time Snowy’s being bitchy, I’ll just call her a dried-up Battarangian cunt.”

Snowy stealthily tossed a shadow dart, but Kitty dodged it with her catlike reflexes. The dart clanged into the wall behind Kitty and rolled across the ground. Before things could escalate, Goodbrain blared his alarm like a truck horn to calm the girls.

“To continue, Kitty and OmegaBot recruited their candidates with minimal complications. Jason’s journey to recruit Aura was a bit more challenging. However, he managed to keep the Muddles from getting the green crystal and convinced Aura to come to the moon base.”

Aura smiled shyly at Jason. “I’m so glad you convinced me to give this all a chance, Jason. I know it took me a while to come around, but I don’t think I’ve ever been happier than I am now with you. All of you. I just... I feel like I have a family now.”

As everyone stared at Aura in shock, Kitty sniffled. Snowy wiped something wet from one eye and then scowled. Beau released Snowy and rushed over to sweep Aura up in a big hug.
