Farpoint Rising (Farpoint Series Book 2), page 41
Everyone seemed to hold their breath, waiting for the seismographs to show any return signals from Sariyn and the rest of their crew.
Kasey paced back and forth as long as he could stand to wait. “Send it again!”
Once more the pattern repeated, and the wait began again.
Kasey shook his head miserably. “Set more charges.”
“Sir, I mean Kasey! We have a two-knock reply!”
“About time! Bring down the diggers and get that tunnel cleared!”
* * *
It took most of the day, but when the dust cleared, a long line of crew slowly filed out followed by a good amount of the mining equipment they had taken with them. Finally, Sariyn and Darnell walked out.
A low rumble filled the air just as they exited, followed by a burst of dust and dirt that boiled fourth from the entrance, covering everyone.
He was proud to see the crew run blindly into the thick debris plume, quickly helping their friends to safety.
Eventually, the excitement and hugging calmed down and the tears started as they learned about the crew members who had been lost in the epic fight against the mothership.
“We’ve had several tremors over the last few days.” Sariyn waved at the dissipating dust. “I guess our luck held out just long enough.”
“You were all very lucky to get out of there when you did.” Kasey tried to hide his concerned. “Sorry we didn’t make it back sooner. By my count, everyone made it?”
“Yea, we are all fine, but it was real close there for a while.” She looked uncomfortable at all the attention she was getting.
Kasey pulled Sariyn and Darnell away from the crowd, waving the crew back as they went.
“So, how the hell are you even here?” Darnell jumped in. “And how in the holy verse did you stop that beast of a mothership?”
AnnaChi shrugged casually. “Well, we went out with the RDF and navy to say hello to the Cassians. Fran decided to join us after a while.”
“And?” he demanded.
“Well, we can save the fine details for later,” Kasey continued, “but we took out the mothership's shields, mostly, and then Fran crashed the Pathfinder into it. When that didn't stop it completely, we docked the Nimbus and fought our way through the ship and killed a few new aliens who had enslaved the entire Cassian race to fight their wars for them. The remaining Cassian on that mothership are no longer slaves and are now working with the navy to share what they know.”
“Wait? Slaves…” Sariyn shuttered. “Holy hell! I need so many more details—and the data! Can I get access to that mothership?”
“Can’t for now, sorry.” He laughed. “We grabbed a few trinkets before we left, but otherwise the navy is taking the mothership for research, and I am not sure if we will ever get it back—although it is officially ours according to Flair. Nimbus is also going to be gone for quite a while for major repairs. A large portion of her lower decks are gone. So, we are stuck here for a while, but if we need to, we can take some people back to the Trias system.”
“Damn! No wait, that’s actually good, I suppose. Less distractions.”
“Distractions? From what?”
When Sariyn didn’t respond, Kasey looked over to Darnell hoping for some clarity, but he just gave him a knowing smile in return.
“Sorry, what am I missing?”
Sariyn finally burst the silence. “You are never going to believe what we found down there! We are going to need a place to talk. Privately.”
