“Kiss me already, you idiot,” I manage to say between sobs and laughter. A look of relief washes over Kye’s face and his lips collide with mine. He lifts me up and I wrap my legs around him. His hold on me is so tight I can barely breathe, but I get it… the overwhelming feelings, the desperation, the need to immerse ourselves in these new feelings of love. We almost lost each other and I’m just so happy to be back in his arms. Suddenly, he’s flinging me down onto the bed, spreading my legs with his knees as he joins me.

“Whoa! Wait, wait! Kye, you’re sick! We can’t!” I protest.

“This will make me feel better, I promise,” he rumbles against my neck, bathing me in kisses and nuzzles. My reaction to his pheromones is immediate. I try to squeeze my legs together to keep the orgasm at bay, but Kye grinds the lower half of his body against me, hinting at the pleasure that is to come.

“Kye…” My thoughts cloud and I pinch my eyes shut, trying to concentrate. “I can’t… I don’t want you to get worse…”

“I’ve been getting better already, I wouldn’t lie to you, Alessandra. Never. Never again. I want you. I’m ready.”

I honestly don’t need much encouragement. My reservations slip away as Kye and I work to rip the shirt from my body while still trying to remain in constant contact. My breath hitches when his mouth finds my breast. He grips my mounds with both hands, pressing them together, licking and sucking at my sensitive flesh before skimming his rough jaw over the tight peaks of my nipples. I explode in an orgasm, my needy pussy constricting around nothingness. I grab his ass and pull him closer to me, feeling his hard cock straining against his pants.

“In me! Now!” I scream out and we’re both scrambling at our pants, but as soon as his cock springs free I’m hungry for it. I push him back and he falls against the pillow. He tries to pull me on top of him, but I knock his hands away, straddling his legs and reaching for that big pearly cock of his. We are as frantic this time around as we were the first time. I take a breath, exhaling over the slick head of his penis. He throws his head back into the wall and fists his own hair.

The scales across his body are so fine they are barely noticeable, and that is especially true of his cock. But the fact that they are scales and not skin gives them a different feel altogether. There’s this duality of smoothness and grip that doesn’t come standard on a human male. As I stroke him, I notice the purple hue flushing his length. I let my tongue tease at him, but when I taste the first bead of precum I hungrily take him into my mouth. He shivers when I moan my pleasure around him, and one of his hands goes to my ass, kneading and caressing me as I work him. His fingers find my slit, but at this angle he can only play at the seam. He grabs at my hips in frustration, surprising me. He pulls me up, repositioning my cunt above his mouth so we can pleasure each other together.

The sexiest thing about making love to Kye is how into it he is. He loses himself to the passion of it all. Even now as he licks at my sex he is growling absently, causing vibrations to roll across my most sensitive parts. I feel the spines at his jaw teasing my thighs. Between his cock in my mouth and his face between my legs, I’m on sensory overload. I lift up as he tongues my clit, only to have him pull me back down with a growl. I follow his lead and just let go, grinding my hips in rhythm with his ministrations. It doesn’t take long before I’m seeing stars. My body coils and snaps. One second, I’m riding out an orgasm on his tongue and the next he has me flipped onto my back on the bed.

My eyes fly open when he pushes inside of me, I bite back a moan. Our gazes lock as he pumps into me once, twice… again and again… slowly, powerfully rocking me. He drops his face down to rest his forehead against mine and we breathe in each other’s air.

“You feel so amazing,” he grits out. Then he’s mumbling about how perfect I am just before losing control. His pumping becomes frantic and the bed shakes beneath us. I can’t keep myself quiet any longer—no, I’m screaming with each thrust. The bed bangs into the wall and I grab at his muscled shoulders and silken hair, squirming against him. I already feel another orgasm building and Kye seems to be on the same page. When my third orgasm splits me, he calls out my name and I feel him emptying his seed into me. My pussy milks every last drop until he collapses on top of me. I hug him with my whole body, arms and legs wrapped around him, and his cock still buried deep inside me, and he hugs me right back.

“I love you so much, Alessandra. My wife, my perfect wife.”

“We still aren’t married yet,” I remind him.

He pops up, just enough to look me in the eyes. “Did you say ‘yet’?

I blush at the realization and can’t seem to find any words to respond with. Kye just beams a smile at me and buries his face in my neck.

“How are you feeling?” I finally manage, running my hands over him, I check for worsening color pigments and signs of fever, but still detect no cause for alarm.

  “Wonderful,” comes his muffled voice.

“I didn’t mean—are you feeling sick or anything?” I revise.

“I’ve never felt so good in all my life,” he tells me. “As a matter of fact, I am ready again if you are.” His hands trail up and down my thighs and over my hips before they make their way to my cunt.

“Am I ever going to see the light of day again?” I joke.

“I suppose…” he says, already losing himself in the kisses he is giving to my neck. “I’m sure we’ll run out of food at some point, but we can stay here until then.”

And it goes on like that for hours. Laughing, cuddling, and making love. Sometimes slow and intense, sometimes frantic and needy. We eat and I make Kye drink more water. Finally, at some point in the night, we fall into a deep sleep and it isn’t until morning that we rouse again. But it isn’t the sound of the rain that wakes us this time. It is the sound of a violent crash followed by screaming.

  Chapter 50

  Kye

Rennek was right. All it took was an illness and Alessandra opened up to me. Well, not an illness per se, but some clever dye work courtesy of the pink cabbages we grow out in the fields and a little water splashed in my face. Yes, it was a lie, but a justifiable one. Alessandra wouldn’t talk to me. She needed a push to move past what had come before for us. And just look at the outcome! With her lying wrapped tightly in my arms, I can’t help but feel like I made the right decision.

We are both exhausted now, after spending the night drifting in and out of sleep, making passionate love every time we woke. It’s exactly how I would like to spend this day as well. But when a terrible crash rips us from our sleep, somehow, I know that it won’t be in the cards for us. Alessandra jumps up.

“What was that?” she asks, suddenly wide awake. I get up from the bed and pull my trousers on.

“No! Wait, Kye! You’re going to make yourself sick again!” she protests, putting on her clothes. But then the crashing noise devolves into screams and we both jet out the door. I pause only to grab my Tobac Taas.

It is still raining when I run barefoot and shirtless out into the mud. “Dear God…” Alessandra gasps when she sees a great shadow in the distance. “What is that? A bear?”

The gargantuan animal before us takes a heavy swipe at the aviary, and the birds within screech in terror. Another piece of the wood frame gives way and feathers scatter in the mud as the creature paws at the defenseless birds. When it catches one in its mouth the bird screams out. That is, until the scream is abruptly cut short.

I take a step forward, but Alessandra grabs my arm to stop me. “Don’t!” she hisses, pulling me back towards the borough. “They’re just birds, let the thing eat its fill and leave.”

She’s right, but I look one last time, before I take my woman inside to ride out this beast’s carnage. Thank all that is good that I do, because I notice something this time that I hadn’t seen before. In the back of the half-demolished cage, crouched behind the nesting boxes, I spot Tennir. It is only a matter of time before the beast realizes a worthier meal is within its grasp, and based on the state of the cage, I wouldn’t say much time.

“Go get help,” I say before sprinting to Tennir’s aid.

Tennir doesn’t see me, but he must know his time is running short. In a different scenario, the smartest thing to do would be to run, but he is backed into the cage and must pass the beast to make his escape. He reaches for a split piece of wood that has fallen near him and takes his shot. Leaping from atop the nesting box, he swings the board down against the beast’s snout. There is an ear-splitting crack. If only he had waited for me, if only he had known help was on its way. The beast roars and swings its heavy paw at its attacker.

I’m too close now to see Tennir. The beast raises itself on its hind legs and it towers above the caved in roof of the aviary. I do not hesitate to leap onto its back, driving my short sword into its heavy coat and using the leverage to climb higher towards its neck. It feels the pain of my blade and whips around quickly but is unable to reach me. I struggle to hold on. If I fall, his claws will shred me.

The beast is smart, though. It quickly spins and rams its back into the remainder of the cage, pinning me between splintered wood and its fur-covered body. The arm that holds my longsword is free, and though I do not have an angle to deliver a death blow, I bring my blade down hard. The creature falls forward onto all fours in pain, saving me from being flattened. Unfortunately, the motion causes me to lose my grip and roll over the monster’s shoulder, my back slamming into the muddied ground. I do not wait to catch the breath that was knocked from my lungs. Instead I use the forward momentum to roll my body from the beast’s reach.

It is angry now, no longer fighting with calculation but with animalistic rage. Froth shoots from its mouth as it bellows at me, lumbering toward me at a speed barely reconcilable with its massive size. I need to get myself positioned at the rear of the beast—it is the only chance I have. The longer I stay within reach of its claws, the less likely it is I will win this fight. The fact that Tennir has not stepped in to help has not escaped me. He must be injured, perhaps gravely so. Losing is not an option. I must best this creature and protect Tennir.

I dive out of the way just in time to miss the swipe of its claw. I scramble through the mud, rolling and sliding to avoid the beast’s onslaught. Being light on my feet has always been one of my greatest strengths as a fighter, but I am not at my best in this mud. My feet can’t gain the traction I need to get me into the positions I want to be in. Eventually, I find myself between Tennir and the beast. I steal a glimpse at the man. There is a red gash across his torso and the mud around him is stained a darker shade.

I am too close to him. If I pivot I will protect myself, but the beast might then trample Tennir. The only option I have is for attack. I crouch low to give my legs the power to propel me towards the oncoming monster. The ground quakes as it barrels at us. I wait for my moment, sucking in a deep breath. The thought of Alessandra washes over me, steeling my confidence. Time slows and my muscles tighten as I move to leap—but a streak of orange and black flies past my line of sight and the beast is thrown to the side. A second orangey blur joins the first and I see now that they are two giant cats who have united with us against the beast Alessandra called a bear.

I don’t waste a second of this precious time. I turn and grab Tennir, throwing him over my shoulder, and I set course for the village. The cries of the beasts behind me are the things of nightmares. I run on. Ahead of me I see the welcome sight of Rennek, followed by the other Vendari, bounding toward me on all fours. Alessandra sprints at their heels, unable to keep their pace.

I collapse to my knees as we meet one another, and the men help me carefully get Tennir off my back. Rennek and Bossan take over the substantial weight.

“Come! To my ship! Mire and Gile have med training! Bring him!” Gorrard shouts, and the three Vendari hurry to get Tennir to the medical attention he so desperately needs. Kellen is the only one who remains. Alessandra catches up now, dropping to her knees beside me. I hear the shouts and cries of other humans approaching.

“Kye, look at me. Are you okay?” Alessandra asks, her voice laced with fear.

“I am fine,” I tell her, letting her pull me to my feet.

“Are you sure? Have you checked?” she asks, running her hands over me, searching for hidden wounds.

“I am fine. Just tired,” I assure her again.

“Is everyone okay?” Kate calls out as she meets us.

“What happened?” April manages between gasps of air.

“Tennir was attacked by an animal,” Kellan tells her. April gasps in horror. “He was taken to Gorrard’s ship to be treated.”

“Oh my god, come on,” she says, tugging at Clark. They turn and run in the opposite direction.

“You’re sure you’re okay?” Kate asks again, but before I can answer, Alessandra stops me.

“Kye? What’s this?” I look down at her hands. Her palms are covered in pink dye from checking me for injuries. I look at myself. The mud and the rain have smeared my false coloring and it is streaking down my body.

“Looks like cabbage juice—” Kate answers, but her voice cuts short as she reads our expressions and she sidles up next to Kellen.

“Why do you have cabbage juice…” Alessandra begins, but she stops herself before bothering to finish the question. She already knows the answer.

  “Alessandra—” I start.

She raises her hand to stop me. “I just don’t understand… I mean, I see what you did… but why?”

“I love you, Alessandra. I gave up everything in my life to come here and be with you. I had to make you see—”

“Gave up? You were fired, Kye.”

“I quit. The day you left me, I quit,” I admit finally.

She scoffs and shakes her head. “All you do is lie to me.”

“They weren’t lies, I just wanted to encourage you to see—” I try.

“No. You’re a liar, Kye, and a manipulator.”

“Please, Alessandra, hear me. Everything I’ve ever said about my feelings for you is true. It’s just, I’m at a loss when it comes to you. I don’t know how to make you see what we have… and everything it could be,” I plead my case.

“Make me see? That’s not something you can force, Kye, and besides, I think you’re the one who can’t see it clearly.”

“Please, Alessandra, I’ll ask you one last time. If you say no, I’ll never bother you again. Please just teach me how you want to be loved. I will learn. I will get better at it.”

“You’re in no position to be making requests of me,” she says coolly.

“Then tell me what you want. I’ll do anything, anything you ask, just tell me.”

Her reply is quick. She doesn’t even need to think about it. “Leave. Go away and leave me alone. Please, let me get on with my life,” she says, backing away from me.

I take a step towards her, but Kate is already by her side, pulling her away. Kellen protectively blocks the women. When I meet his gaze, the disdain in his eyes is palpable.

  “I’ll go,” I tell him. “Don’t worry, I’ll go.”

  Chapter 51

  Alessandra

Kye left that day. That very minute, as a matter of fact. He didn’t even go back to his room to clean up or get his things. He just left.

The Vendari were furious that he lied to me. Had Rad not just done the same thing to Reagan? But since Kye had helped fight alongside Kellen and likely saved Tennir’s life, they were kind and let him borrow a pod stocked with supplies for his journey.

We didn’t even say goodbye. It shouldn’t matter to me, but it does. I also didn’t get to tell him how stupid he was for fucking everything up, because whether he knew it or not, I loved him, too.

I guess that’s what kept me in bed for the past week, crying. It’s funny, because I didn’t even really cry over my stupid abduction. Yet here I am crying over the guy who seemed cosmically predisposed to breaking my heart.

“You’re going to have to get up eventually,” Reagan tells me on one of her regular visits. “Shit, I had to, so you do, too.”

“I don’t want to. I’m not ready,” I tell her, tucking the blankets around my face. The rain has hung around, making the world seem in tune with my heartache.

  “What’s holding you back?”

“I don’t know… the idea of going on… living life with this void in it. Pretending that there isn’t this gaping hole in my heart that his stupid ass was supposed to fill.”

  “He was stupid, huh?”

  “Supremely.”

“Love does that to a person. Especially real love. It makes you stupid. Makes you crazy. Makes you do things that are out of character. Especially if you feel like it’s about to slip through your fingers.”

“Of all people, how can you defend him?”

“I’m just pointing out some obvious differences. I mean, look at Rad. He lied to me, he lied to me so he could get in my pants. Straight up, he was using me. But why did Kye lie to you? Because he loved you and was scared of the idea of not having you. Gasp! That fiend!”
