Bound By Dragons: A Standalone Fantasy Romance, page 14
Regardless of the strange way the king denied his need and past use of Fae gold, he certainly had a good reason for hating the Fae king, the Ruler of the Realm of Lights. His own daughter had been slain by our new neighbors. Not that the Seelie Fae were actually new to the world; they had been behind the Veil and had recently thinned it enough to engage in trade.
“I will have revenge.” Lifting his fist, the king squeezed his fingers until his knuckles were white. “We all will.” He whirled on me, his grief giving way to rage. “You will kill him in the most painful way possible.”
The image of a four-pronged leaf flashed through my mind. “With cherubium root.” It was the worst way to die. Painful. Slow. And the victim couldn’t cry out for help or thrash about. No antidotes either. It didn’t matter though. I was not going. Not a chance. I would escape Master’s network and get away from him for good. Maybe Raulian would come with me.
But only if we could cut out our curse runes.
Everyone who had tried that—two that I knew of personally—had died from self-inflicted wounds or by Master’s stick. But I wasn’t just anyone… A memory of Oolard’s broken legs and his corpse left to rot in the wasteland blinked across my mind’s eye.
Sick glee poured across the king’s features and more tears glistened in his gaze. “Cherubium root. Yes.” He turned to Master. “She is the best choice. I can tell by the look of her.”
He had no idea I was plotting escape rather than his impossible task.
