Kate paused, blinking stinging tears onto her hot cheeks. She knew that Cradleworth was in some way responsible for Philip’s death, as she knew what he planned to do with Jerrico. ‘To have Philip back with me is all I want—all I desire—but not like this.’ She turned and flung open the door, rushing for a couple of yards before coming face to face with a wall of bodies in the night; all standing deathly still, shoulder to shoulder, blocking her path. Kate recognised some faces, even in the darkness. She had seen their names in the sweet shop marking the jars of blue mist. In a co-ordinated motion, reminiscent of a Roman battle formation, each figure took one stride forward. The faces of the front line caught the lights from the barber’s poles, and Kate backtracked to the door of the shop. Their eyes were gone, replaced by gaping, black, vacuous pits. A few had patches of blood caked to their mouths, staining their clothes and dripping from their fingertips. She slowly turned to face Cradleworth’s optical cavities of nothingness, and the eternity beyond.
‘Don’t you see? They enjoyed my sweets so much, they are already back for more,’ he said. ‘I’ve decided to revise my offer. I’m going to deliver your beloved to you before I have Mr Flynn. Think of it as a down payment, or a test of faith. A test of the faith I have in you. Would you like to see him right now?’
Kate screamed like she never had before.
