Eliza began to feel a little nervous. Mummy wasn’t usually this serious, particularly on birthdays.

  ‘What is it?’ she asked her mother in a timid voice. ‘What does it mean?’

  Mama turned to her and suddenly her face softened into a great, beaming smile.

  ‘Oh, Eliza! It means that you are about to have the most marvellous birthday that you could possibly imagine.’

  ‘Will there be fireworks?’ she gasped.

  ‘Probably.’

  ‘And magic?’

  ‘Definitely.’

  ‘Really Mama? How? Tell me! Why?’

  ‘Because he’s back, my darling. He’s back.’
