The Deadland Chronicles (Book 3): The Endless Dead, page 31
part #3 of The Deadland Chronicles Series
The female leaned in closer to the male, and when her mouth opened, a deep raspy voice came out and said, “Grayson should have never gone ahead.”
The male replied with, “Yes.” His voice, like hers, sounded husky and almost mechanical as if speaking actually pained him.
“What should we do?” She asked.
“We will try to find him and take corrective action,” the male said. “We are stronger when we stand as four.”
“How do we know where he’s gone?” She asked.
There was a long pause in the conversation as the zombies milled around them, almost threatening to swallow the couple. This couple that was the same as the rest of the horde in so many ways, but quite different.
“We just look for the carnage,” the male said. “Anything or anyone who stood in his way will be dead.”
She nodded her head and looked to the east. After a long moment, “Should we keep moving?”
“Yes,” he replied. “Go tell Lance we will continue east.”
Once again, she nodded her head and shoved through the zombies toward the male zombie’s right. For a few moments, it was as if she were pushing through a pounding surf, but after she dispatched two more zombies with pulverizing blows from her fist, she made a path through the horde.
Ten minutes later, she crossed over the front edge of the zombie horde back to her place on the southern edge of the throng. Just a minute after that and without a word, the whole mass of zombies, nearly fifty-thousand strong, pushed forward, heading east.
