“So…can we do that again?” I whisper to him, my body rubbing against his, and he groans in my ear.

“Always, Ruby. I’m yours always, and whatever you want, that’s what you’ll get.”

I smile to myself. I’m certain he means it.

  ELEVEN

  Ransom

  Five Years Later…

“I can’t believe that we’re doing this all over again,” my wife cries as I wheel her into the hospital.

“I know, love, but you’re doing so good. You’re amazing, incredible,” I reassure her, and she glares up at me, fire in her green eyes.

“That’s easy for you to say! You’re not about to push a big baby out of your vagina!”

“You’re right, love,” I try to soothe her, and she just glares at me.

I decide to keep my mouth shut for a while.

“Who is going to pick up Rollins?” Ruby asks me as I get her checked in.

“I texted Cameron and Ford. One of them will pick him up when they grab Alma.”

She nods, panting as another contraction hits her. I give her my hand, and she squeezes it so hard that I’m sure I feel a few bones break.

“Ow,” she cries, and I start to remember how much I hate this part too.

To be fair, I hate anything that has my wife in pain or upsets her.

Ruby and I got married five years ago and had our son, Rollins, exactly nine months later. I know that moving fast kind of scared Ruby, but I’ve worked hard to make sure that she never regretted that decision. I’ve done everything I can to put her fears to rest while showing her that I’m the right person for her.

“Right this way, Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell,” one of the nurses says as she leads us down to our room.

Ruby groans as another contraction hits, and I hurry to get her into the room and settled.

“I want the drugs,” she tells the nurse, and the woman smiles.

“I’ll get the doctor for you. We’ll get you settled and as comfortable as we can soon,” she promises.

I help Ruby stand and get her into the hospital bed.

“I hate these things. The mattress is too thin,” she says as she shifts on the bed.

“We’ll be home and in our bed soon enough, love. What can I do to make it better? You want a foot rub? Some ice chips?”

“Just get this baby out of me.”

“I wish I could do this instead of you.”

“I know,” she sighs, and her eyes squeeze shut as another contraction hits.

I grab her hand, and she grips mine tight, crying out as the pain really hits.

“Breathe, love. In, in, out, out,” I say, doing the breathing exercises with her.

“I hear that we’re ready to have a baby today,” Doctor Moreno says as she breezes into the room.

“Yep,” I say, brushing Ruby’s hair back from her face.

“Let’s take a look here,” the doctor says, and I smile at Ruby as the doctor and nurses do their thing.

Ruby and I still live in our house, next door to Ford and Cameron. The girls love being close, and they get to have play dates pretty much every day. I’m just happy as long as my Ruby is happy.

Ruby still helps out at Nosh when it’s needed. She likes making her own extra cash, not that either of us needs it. She hasn’t helped out in a while. She didn’t want to be on her feet for hours, especially when she was so far along in her pregnancy.

“Alright, you’re dilated to eight already.”

“How long were you having contractions for before you called me?” I ask my wife, and she gives me a guilty look.

  “A little bit,” she admits.

“Why didn’t you call me earlier?”

“You never go out with your friends. I didn’t want to interrupt your fun.”

“Ruby,” I groan, and she squeezes my hand as another contraction hits her.

  “We’re here now.”

“Okay, well, it’s almost time to push,” Dr. Moreno tells us.

“No drugs?” Ruby whines, and the doctor shakes her head.

“No, I’m afraid that it’s too late. You’d have the baby before they were able to fully enter your system. You’re progressing well, though. It shouldn’t be long now.”

“I can’t do this,” Ruby blurts out, looking up at me with wide, scared eyes.

“Yes, you can. You’re so strong, Rubes. You can do it. I’ll be right here for you. Just tell me what you need.”

“We’re never having sex again,” she tells me, and I nod dutifully.

  “Never.”

“I mean it!” She shouts, and I grab her hand.

“Me too. Whatever you want, Rubes.”

The nurses start to bustle about, and the doctor starts to prepare for labor. My heart is racing, and I’m just as nervous as I was when we had Rollins.

“It’s going to be okay, love,” I whisper, and she nods, busy doing her breathing exercises.

I stay by her side, holding her hand and blotting her forehead for the next two hours. I let her scream at me, swear, try to break my hand, anything that she needs to get through this.

Finally, we hear the sounds of our newborn son’s cries filling the room and Ruby grabs my hand as we both look to the doctor.

  “He’s perfect, Rubes. Thank you.”

She smiles tiredly up at me, and I grin down at her.

“I love you,” I whisper as I lean down to kiss her.

  “I love you too.”

The doctor finishes cleaning him up and doing everything else that she needs to do, and then she smiles as she carries our baby over to us. She lays him on Ruby’s chest and we smile down at our new son.

“Do you have a name picked out?” Dr. Moreno asks us, and I smile at Ruby.

“Ryker,” she says, and I nod.

“Ryker Allen Mitchell,” I tell her, saying his full name.

“We’ll let you bond. Let me know if you need anything,” Dr. Moreno says before she leaves the room, and then it’s just Ruby, Ryker, and me.

“You did great,” I tell her, and she smiles.

“Sorry for yelling at you. Did I hurt your hand?”

“No,” I lie, flexing my bruised fingers.

She gives me a knowing look, and I laugh.

“Maybe a little, but I’m not complaining.”

She sighs and we both stare down at our son.

“I think that maybe I could do this again,” she admits, and I laugh.

“Whatever you want, Rubes. Whatever you want.”

She smiles as I sit on the bed next to her and wrap my arms around the two of them. I relax as we enjoy our new little family member.

I know that getting together Ruby was a fight, but it was worth it. She and the kids are my whole world, and I can’t imagine going through life with anyone else. Luckily for me, I don’t have to.
