When Love Calls, page 13
Instead of sitting, Mona accepted the hand her sister offered and held onto her while she stepped into one three-inch heel pump that matched the dress perfectly.
“Honey, unless you plan on giving me another grandbaby, I don’t need anything else.”
Mona set the other shoe on the floor and stepped into it, but jerked her head up when Johnette gasped.
“What?”
Mona looked down at the shoes. When they appeared fine, she returned her gaze to her sister who had her hand over her mouth staring at Sumeera. Mona then glanced at her daughter, who wore a silly grin.
“What?” she said again, and then it dawned on her what she’d said. “Are you…am I…are we getting another baby?”
Sumeera nodded vigorously, and Mona and Johnette squealed like schoolgirls.
“Shhh! I wanted you two to know before we told anyone else. In six months, you guys will have another baby to spoil.”
Mona hugged her daughter and fought back tears. She didn’t think she could get any happier, but this news was almost as exciting as marrying the man of her dreams.

Dexter released a loud whistle the moment Mona appeared. Everyone within earshot laughed, but all he could do was stare at the beautiful woman who had agreed to be his wife. He didn't think she could get any prettier, but he was wrong. She looked classy and sexy as she glided in step with the wedding march song flowing through the speakers, an endearing smile brightening her gorgeous face.
“Like I said months ago, she’s way out of your league,” his best man, Sean, whispered next to him.
Dexter laughed. He agreed, but thankfully, she still agreed to be his wife. He couldn’t ask for a more perfect day. The fall weather was cooperating, and the women in the Jenkins family, including his daughter, had done a great job decorating the yard. Before getting into place, he’d only had a few moments to take in the décor, including the large white bouquets sitting on white stands at the end of each row of chairs. Now he stood inside the gazebo, staring out in the crowd where at least a hundred people sat, their gazes on his lovely bride.
Dexter went down the one step of the gazebo and captured Mona’s hand in order to help her up the step.
“Hi,” she said, smiling up at him when they took their place in front of the minister.
“Hi yourself, beautiful.”
Her soft laugh washed over him like a gentle breeze, adding to his excitement about this next step in their lives.
“Dear friends and family. We’re here to celebrate…” the minister started.
Dexter tried focusing on his words, but all he could think about was how his life had exceeded his expectations. After the accident, he thought he would never be able to find joy again, but he’d been wrong. He had just hit the six-year sober mark; he was surrounded by his family; and most important, he was marrying the woman who was giving him a second chance at love.
Staring at her now, as they exchanged vows, he was glad they had agreed to a short ceremony. He couldn’t wait to officially call her his wife and start their new life together.
A short while later, the minister said, “I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss your bride.”
“With pleasure.”
Happiness soared through Dexter’s body when their lips touched. Mona had already made him promise not to get too crazy with the kiss, but he couldn’t help pulling her closer and deepening their connection. He hadn’t seen her all morning, and he intended to get his fill.
“Save some for the honeymoon,” someone called out.
“Yeah, ’cause some of us are ready to eat.”
Dexter chuckled against Mona’s lips. He knew that voice belonged to Martina. She always had something smart to say, especially when it involved food.
“I guess we should let them eat, huh?” Mona whispered when they pulled apart.
“If we must.” Dexter kept his arm around her waist as their family cheered. “I hope you know you’ve made me the happiest man on the planet.”
She touched his cheek, tears lacing her eyelashes. “I love you so much. Thank you for making one of my dreams come true. I never thought…”
Dexter touched his lips to hers again. “I love you too, and I plan on making all of your dreams come true.”
The corner of her lips lifted into a smile. “I’m going to hold you to that.”
