Rescue
Hell cracked open, oozing evil into the world. The human population is decimated. Dangerous monsters roam the land. Witches and vampires rule with cruelty and violence and shifters have all but lost their magic. One reticent girl and a band of brothers are the last spark of hope in a world consumed by darkness.
Wolf shifter Kayla Redclaw is the last Alpha female. She might be the strongest Alpha even known, but all she wants is a quiet life, hunting in the forest.
Unfortunately, her father has other plans. He’s called every Alpha male in the region to compete in a tournament. And Kayla is the prize! She is powerless to stop it, believing she has no choice but to dutifully follow her father’s commands.
Quinn, Sid, Felix, Riddick, and Jagger Blackfang arrive for the tournament, disclosing a chilling prophecy: the last Alpha Queen will mate with all five brothers and bring balance back to the world.
Blackfangs vie for Kayla’s attention, but she is unsure if she wants them or their prophecy. Yet, the mystery of her expanding magic cannot be ignored.
Will Kayla find the confidence to accept her power or will she run from her destiny and a love so strong it could change everything?
Chapter 1
Kayla crept along the narrow deer trace, crouching low in the dense underbrush. With her recurve bow slung over her shoulder and her wolf, Bane, by her side, she stalked a three-pronged whitetail buck deeper into the yellow birch forest. A warm breeze swept through the trees, doing little to dry the sweat trickling down her brow.
Her breath caught as she approached the edge of her pack’s territory. The shimmering wall of magic should have represented safety, but for Kayla, it felt more like a prison.
With practiced silence, she padded over the dry yellow leaves littering the forest floor. When the buck stopped to graze on a patch of bluegrass, Kayla’s shifter senses peaked. She sniffed the air, anticipating the buck’s next move. He tore off another mouthful of grass, unaware of her presence.
Drawing her bow over her shoulder, Kayla nocked an arrow and waited for the perfect moment to let it fly. Bane’s muscles coiled in anticipation, poised to strike. Kayla felt the tug of Bane’s animal mind asking if it was time. She sent a soothing sound through their mental link and aimed her arrow at the buck’s heart. If her arrow did not fly true, there would be no meat to bring back to the pack tonight.
The buck looked up, turning its chest just slightly toward Kayla. She released her arrow. The long wooden dart shot through the air, piercing the animal’s flesh. The buck’s high-pitched screech echoed through the forest as it reared on its hind legs and sprinted away.
“Now, Bane,” she barked.
Her red wolf familiar burst into action, charging after the fleeing deer. Kayla sprang to her feet, nocked another arrow, and shot at the back of the buck’s neck. Her arrow hit just between the shoulders as Bane bit into the creature’s back thigh. It wailed again. Blood streamed from its wounds, drenching its fawn-colored coat.
Kayla sprinted after the buck, nocking a third arrow. She released it mid-stride, focusing her alpha magic. Her aim was true, and it hit the buck right under its shoulder.
Losing strength under the ferocity of Bane’s attack and multiple arrow wounds, the buck stumbled to its knees. Kayla drew her knife as she pounced. Grabbing the animal’s horns, she yanked its head back and sliced its neck in one swift motion. It died with a gurgling wail, Bane still tugging at its back leg.
“That’s enough, Bane,” Kayla said, wiping her knife on the grass beside her kill.
She sheathed her hunting knife and unbuckled the rope she kept coiled at the base of her spine. She threw the rope, and it flew overhead and wrapped around a sturdy branch. She grabbed the line and secured it to the tree, fitting it with a ratchet winch.
After tying the buck’s hind hooves, she pulled the rope to hoist the deer into the air. The buck was heavy, but it was an instance where Kayla’s alpha strength came in handy. With her deer hung, she sliced through its gut and began to pull out its innards.
Bane chewed at the coiled entrails while Kayla removed the animal’s gonads and tossed them on the bloody pile.
“Good hunting,” Kayla said to her familiar.
Bane looked up at her with satisfied eyes. Her red coat and white teeth were stained with the deer blood. Bane grumbled hungrily as she chewed. Kayla laughed and began to skin the deer.
With the deer’s hide spread across the leaf-covered ground, she sliced out the venison meant to fill the hungry mouths of her pack. They would need even more provisions than usual for their guests.
Kayla grimaced at the thought. A great tournament was being held in her honor. It would be a gruesome test of strength, with her as the grand prize.
She gripped the deer’s liver with blood-soaked hands and tried to clear her mind. She was a hunter, more at home in the forest than in the alpha’s lodge. But as far as her father was concerned, her fate was sealed.
Kayla looked at the glimmering magical barrier at the edge of her pack’s territory, longing to escape to the other side. She had been across the barrier more than a few times on her hunts. But leaving pack-protected territory was strictly forbidden, especially for the alpha’s daughter.
Especially for the last alpha female in all the world.
Kayla threw the liver onto the pile of good meat and shook her head. Everyone claimed she was the last, but given their limited communication, there was no way of knowing that for sure.
She glanced at the barrier again, her heart yearning for freedom. She was not so naïve that she believed there was something better beyond the wall. She knew exactly what dangers lurked on the other side, but what awaited her back at the village was even more daunting.
She cut the last piece of meat from the deer’s carcass and threw it on the pile. With that accomplished, she removed a bit of bone and antler before releasing the winch. She used her rope to tie up the hide and slung it over her back.
With a low whistle to Bane, she hurried through the forest toward the closest water source. Sliding down a steep rocky slope, she braced herself as she reached the bottom. The river lay just beyond a stand of young willow.
Creeping through the dense narrow trunks, she came out onto a rocky riverbed and crouched over the water. Dipping her hands into the cool stream, she scrubbed the blood from her skin, and splashed it over her damp face.
Bane lapped at the water, taking a long, much needed drink. The wolf lifted her head, narrowing her eyes at the rustling rhododendrons across the water. Bane growled low in her throat, baring her teeth.
“What is it?” Kayla stood, grabbing her scope from her belt. She surveyed the opposite shore.
An image of males filled Kayla’s mind through her mental link with her familiar. Scanning the bushes, she focused on the movement. A face appeared between the green leaves and quickly disappeared again. Kayla grabbed her bow and nocked an arrow, pointing it at the intruders.
“Show yourselves!”
Five young men emerged from the blooming purple rhododendrons. They stepped out on the rocky shore across the shallow river. Four of them showed their palms in a sign of surrender. One of them had his sword drawn.
“Who are you? What are you doing in Smoke Mountain territory?”
“We’re here for you, Princess,” said the one brandishing his sword.
His ice-blue eyes sized her up as a humid gust of wind rustled through his shaggy brown hair and beard. He would have been handsome if not for the grimace on his lips and the condescending tone of his voice. The five had the look of siblings. Some had lighter hair or darker eyes, but the family resemblance was obvious.
“You must be here for the tournament.” She lowered her arrow and slipped it back into her quiver. “I don’t want you here, but I suppose it is my duty to show you the way.”
Chapter 2
“We are the Blackfang brothers from the Mist Valley pack,” said one of the males. He smiled at her jovially, showing a set of straight white teeth framed by a trimmed goatee. His green eyes twinkled, and his pin-straight black hair hung to his shoulders. “I’m Riddick.” He offered Kayla his hand.
She looked up at him questioningly. “What do you want?”
“Smoke Mountain Pack doesn’t do handshakes, I guess,” Riddick said.
“The handshake is a human custom,” one of them explained. “It was a traditional human greeting in most western cultures before the cataclysm. In the East, humans would bow in greeting. But this being what was once the United States of America, the handshake was standard practice.”
“Thanks for the rundown of the history of the handshake, Felix, but nobody cares,” the grimacing one said.
“That was far from a comprehensive history,” Felix said. “The practice has fallen out of favor. I’ve concluded my brother Riddick uses it as a means of distraction from his pickpocketing.”
Felix was short and soft compared to the others, with unkempt russet-colored hair and multicolored hazel eyes. Freckles spangled the bridge of his nose, and a red patch of sunburn stained his pale cheeks. He twitched slightly when he spoke, making Kayla assume he was uncomfortable with conversation. But when he continued to explain the human custom of shaking hands, Kayla changed her mind.
“Just shut up, Felix,” the rude one with the sword said.
