“If Mike is already going to be doing a performance, isn’t that enough dancing?” I asked, trying to find any loophole to get out of this flash mob dance. “You know he’s going to go all out.”
“The drag show is completely separate,” Nicole clarified, referencing a good friend of mine who is a straight male firefighter and also happens to be a drag performer on the weekends. That was a whole story for another time, but Mike was already slated to be my best man. “The flash mob dance will be our entrance into the reception and the drag show will be after the cake cutting.”
“Remember that time so, so long ago when you didn’t want to spend all my money?” I teased with a sarcastic grain of truth.
Nicole shot me a glare. “Remember that time so, so long ago when you were single?”
I immediately zipped my lip.
“Okaaaaaay,” Yasmeen butted in as she dragged out her words. “Before the wedding is called off entirely, have we at least agreed on the cake flavor yet? The baker said they need the final call by tomorrow morning to get their orders in.”
“Cookies and cream,” I said.
“Lemon,” Nicole said at the exact same time.
Yasmeen grimaced, lifting her eyebrows. “You know what? It’s too soon to decide on cake. Plus, I think we should consider a different bakery because my best friend Mila used this one for her baby shower cake and it was a lot. What about the general colors for the wedding?”
“Coral and navy blue,” Nicole replied.
“We need colors?” I asked at the same time.
Nicole shot me another look and then began ushering both of us out of their home office. “Okay, that’s enough wedding planning for today. Out, out, out. Let’s get some food.”
Yasmeen left first, and I lingered for a moment in the doorway.
“Hey, you know I’m kidding, right?” I asked Nicole, shoving my hands into the front pockets of my jeans. “Lemon cake, flash mob dance…I’m in for whatever as long as I get to say I do.”
Nicole grinned and pushed up on the balls of their feet to reach my lips with theirs. They gave me a soft peck. “Wait ‘til you hear what I have planned for your tuxedo.”
“Shit.” I grinned and kissed them back before following them out of the office in search of something to eat. “You know I must really love you to be willing to go through all that.”
“You secretly love all of it.” Nicole squeezed my hand.
And they were not-so-secretly right. Embracing the side of me that wasn’t as strait-laced as I once pretended to be had opened up an entirely new world to me—one where people accepted each other for every queer and quirky part of themselves.
I was proud to call these people my family, and even more proud to soon be calling Nicole my spouse.
