  Chapter One

  Marcus

IT WAS MONTHS INTO THE SCHOOL YEAR, AND MY ROOMMATE Webber had finally started to talk to me more. Actual sentences as opposed to his usual simple greetings. His voice captivated me and drew me to his heart-shaped lips. I was so focused on how luscious his lips looked that I didn’t hear some of what he said. I refocused because he was my roommate, and it was against university policy to have relations with them, so any thoughts of how I suddenly found him sexy had to get banished.

“But I feel I’m so far behind. I’ve never done anything.” Webber swiped a hand over his face. We had begun talking about a night out I recently had and ended up discussing how he hadn’t ever been with anyone.

“You’re not alone,” I said, offering him a smile, trying to make him feel not so bad about being all virginal. I got lucky with him because I never filled out the roommate matching questionnaire the school sent me, so I was roomed with a random person that school year. The only thing I knew about him on move in day was that he wasn’t an omega. They didn’t allow alphas and omegas to room together because some years back, they had a big problem with a bunch of alphas impregnating their roommates. Then a lot of the pregnant omegas dropped out and enrollment went down, and the university loved their money, so they banned alphas and omegas rooming together. Also, probably why it was against policy to sleep with your roommate in case someone wasn’t entirely truthful on their application.

Back in the day, our school was called The Northern Virginia School for the Sub-Gendered. It came about after the virus when people started having children that were different. Ones with subgenders, as they called it, alphas and omegas. If you were a beta, you went to the regular universities for what they called regular folk, but since then, more of us have crept up in society and now make up almost half the population. The school’s name got changed to Northern Virginia University and now allowed betas to enroll, like Webber.

“But like kissing, being intimate. I’m scared if I ever go on a date with anyone, I’ll be a clumsy fool. If I wasn’t so fricking shy. I’m in my sophomore year of college already, and I’ve never been kissed or anything else.”

“If you’re with a good person, they’ll understand, and your shyness is one of the things I like about you,” I said, watching the way Webber’s brow crinkled when he was lost in thought, the way he absentmindedly scrubbed his hand over his short light brown hair.

“Yeah, thanks, but it hasn’t helped me in the dating field. I wish there was like a practice course for this kind of stuff.”

“Real life is the practice course.” I thought about what I could consider my practice. The strings of hookups I had over the past few years. No one to ever truly call my boyfriend—mainly because I never stuck around long enough. You could say I had an issue developing closeness with someone I really cared about. It probably stemmed back to my shitty upbringing and seeing what should’ve been intimate relationships be nothing but a bunch of trouble, hatred, and abuse. My dads, my grandparents, it was a real problem in my family.

“That’s what scares me.” He sighed, and his shoulders drooped.

“You have no reason to be scared. Okay?”

  “I suppose.”

“If you’re really worried, I can be your first kiss,” I said, the words flying out of my mouth.

“Really?” He quirked up an eyebrow.

I sat up and shrugged. “Yeah.”

“Wouldn’t that be weird?” he asked, scrunching up his adorable nose.

  “No, I don’t think so.”

He bit the tip of his thumb and bounced his knee. “You sure? And isn’t it against the school’s roommate code?”

“I’m sure you’re irresistible, but it’s just a kiss, and it’s not like the school will find out. But don’t worry. If it’s weird for you, that’s cool.” I didn’t want to admit that I hoped Webber wouldn’t back out. While the suggestion was spontaneous, I really did want to kiss him. Just once to get it out of my system.

  “So, a practice kiss.”

“Yeah, but you don’t need me.” Yes, I backtracked on what I just said, but as I thought about it, I didn’t want to ruin what could be a wonderful memory for him. “When you kiss someone, it’s like your instincts take over, and you just know what to do.”

Webber’s face fell. “Okay, if you say so.”

“Your first kiss is something you’ll remember your whole life. Do you really want it to be me?” I raised an eyebrow and scratched my jaw.

  He shrugged. “I guess not.”

“Your time will come. Maybe we can go out and see if you meet someone.”

“You know I’m not the party type.” He chewed on his bottom lip. He had some of the sexiest gestures and didn’t even realize it. I imagined how it would be to have that bottom lip in my mouth, sucking on it, kissing his beautiful pink lips. Nope. Nope. I definitely had to go find someone for Webber because all the talk had my mind going to places that it shouldn’t have gone.

“There are other places to meet people besides parties.”

He sighed, looking so despondent. “I just don’t know.”

“What about the bookstore? That seems like somewhere you’d be comfortable.” I got up and went over to the nightstand next to Webber’s bed, picking up a book from the stack he had next to an empty glass.

“Go to the bookstore to pick up guys?” He stared at me like it was the most preposterous idea ever.

“Yeah, a book could be a great conversation starter.”

“Okay, I guess it wouldn’t hurt to put forth some effort.”

“That’s the spirit.” I slapped the book back onto the stack.

He sat up, crossing his legs. “When should we go?”

“Whenever you want,” I said, taking a seat in his desk chair.

“Are your classes done for the day?”

I smiled and bobbed my head. “They are, and I don’t have any pressing assignments to work on.”

“You sure you want to do this with me?” he asked, cocking his head to the side.

“Of course, you’re my roommate, and we should get to know each other better, hang out and stuff.”

“Thank you, Marcus.” He sat up straighter, grinning.

“Do you have any certain preference when it comes to men?”

  “Like sub-gender?”

“Yeah. I myself usually like omegas, but have been with my fair share of betas, too.”

“I know since I’m a beta, it’s kind of the thing to be with other betas, but I’ve always had a thing for alphas, even if most of them go for omegas.”

“Not all of them, and like I said, I’ve been with betas.”

  “What about women?”

“Just dudes for me, so bus or car service?”

  “Car, but I’ll pay.”

“All right, I’ll let you.” I gave him a smile, and we headed off to the bookstore.

  ***

When we walked into the store, the smell of freshly brewed coffee called to me.

“Let’s stop there first.” I pointed over at the café. Sure, I worked in a coffee shop, but I couldn’t get enough of the stuff. Coffee was my lifeblood.

“Sounds good. I could use a cup of coffee myself.”

We went up to the counter, and the woman behind the counter took our order.

“Looks kind of empty in here,” Webber said, glancing around the store beyond the café.

“A little, but you never know, and if the bookstore isn’t a good pickup joint, we’ll keep trying. You will get kissed, Webber Watson.”

“Maybe when I’m like forty,” he said with a pout.

“It might not be today or tomorrow, but like I said, your time will come.”

“How have you met all of your guys?”

I tapped the side of my jaw with my finger, thinking about it. “Parties, bars, the student center.”

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to make it sound like you have guys everywhere.”

“It’s okay. I’ve had my fair share of hookups and one-night stands.” I once dated a guy for a month, and I started to like him too much, so I cut it off, never spoke to him again.

“Can I say that you’re very alpha?”

I laughed. “Yeah, we do have a reputation for sleeping around.”

“It’s okay. I’m not judging you.”

  “God, you’re adorable.”

He stared at me with wide eyes.

“You are, Webber. I’m just stating a fact.”

  He gulped. “Thank you.”

“You’re a good guy.” I pinched his chin and clapped my hands together. “From this point forward, it’s my mission to help you out with this, and let me know if you ever want to go out or anything and need a wingman.”

  “Okay, thanks.”

We grabbed our coffees and slowly meandered into the store, walking past shelves and tables full of books, an end cap with staff recommendations, and a center aisle display of what the sign claimed to be the book of the year.

  “Now what?” Webber asked.

“Okay, maybe this wasn’t the best plan. I just really wanted to lift your mood.” I nudged him in the side with my elbow.

“Like you can just walk into a bookstore and pick up a guy.” He shook his head and laughed.

“I guess I was wrong. Maybe you can’t pick up a guy anywhere.”

  Chapter Two

  Webber

I HAD A GOOD ROOMMATE, BUT I KNEW OUR TRIP would more than likely end in failure. I only went along with it because I promised myself that this was the year where I would try to push my own boundaries, get past my shyness. Try new things, meet new people besides my roommate. Marcus was the only person I had ever told that I had never been kissed.

“Hey, you peruse the new releases, and I’m gonna hit up the bathroom.” I clapped Marcus on the back.

“Okay, want me to hold your drink for you?” he asked.

“Sure, thanks.” I handed him my cup and wandered back toward the washrooms. On the way there, I noticed a guy checking out books in the mystery aisle, so I slowed down a bit as I walked by. The guy’s eyes flicked up at me for a second. Even though my heart thudded hard, and my hands shook a bit, I threw him a smile. The guy scrunched up his nose and sharply turned around. Well, maybe he wasn’t into men. I huffed and proceeded to the bathroom.

When I finished, I went back up to the front of the store to find Marcus. He stood near the new release section, talking to somebody. As I got closer, I could tell that it was a tall guy with short dark hair and snugly fitting jeans—the guy I smiled at just minutes ago. My heart deflated. It seemed the guy did like men, but it was just me this guy didn’t want.

“Hey, there you are,” Marcus said, holding my drink out to me.

“Thanks.” I took the cup and steadied my eyes on the floor.

The guy looked from Marcus to me. “I gotta jet but give me a call sometime.”

When the guy walked away, Marcus gave me a smile. “Let’s go wandering.”

  I shook my head.

  “Not up for it anymore?”

“I saw this one guy and smiled at him, but … well … nothing.”

“It’s not nothing. Tell me more.”

“When I came out of the washroom, there he was talking to you.” I frowned.

“Oh, Webber, I’m sorry. He just came up and started talking to me. I wasn’t trying to pick him up or anything.”

“Even if you were, it’s okay,” I whispered.

“Let’s go back to our room and binge watch something.”

  “All right.”

He threw his arm around my shoulders, and we went outside to wait for our ride. I took in a breath of the crisp fall air as we stood on the sidewalk, waiting. Fall had always been my favorite time of the year. I wished it lasted all year long.

“It was only one guy,” Marcus said sweetly.

  I nodded. “I know.”

“You just look so sad.” He made a pouty face at me.

He looked adorable doing that, but it still didn’t quite lift my spirits. “It’s just a bad start.”

“To trying to pick up people?”

“That, everything. I wanted to try to open myself up some this school year. You know? I hadn’t yet, so I figured this could be the beginning.”

  “The start of something great.”

“I’m not so sure about that,” I said, stepping to the side to let a couple pass on the sidewalk.

He raised an eyebrow and fixed his eyes on me. “So, why didn’t you tell me about this plan of yours?”

“I don’t know. Because you have no problem when it comes to that stuff.”

“Dude, you don’t want to be like me. Hookup after hookup.” He ran a hand through his hair and shook his head.

“You make it sound like it’s a bad thing. So why do you do it?” I asked, studying my handsome roommate. Like most alphas, he was tall—more than half a foot taller than me. He had thick dark brown hair I wanted to run my fingers through, the most perfect square jawline known to man, and stunning hazel eyes. Plus, he was nice to everyone. The package deal was the best way to describe him.

“One, I like sex. Two, I’m messed up.”

“You seem pretty perfect to me.”

“You, Webber, are the perfect one.”

My face grew warm. Sure, he was just being nice, but it felt good hearing him say that.

  Chapter Three

  Marcus

I MEANT WHAT I SAID. WEBBER WAS PRETTY DAMN PERFECT. After we climbed into the car, I reached over and squeezed his knee. I wanted to let him know I was there for him. Sure, he had just started opening up to me, but even before we talked much, I always had this feeling like I had to care for him, and I was going to do that. I should’ve made more effort in the beginning of the year to get to know him better. You can’t change the past, but you can try your best to right your wrongs, and I was going to be an awesome roommate and friend going forward.

He smiled at me and placed his hand on top of mine. I loved that shy smile of his. He was such a sweet guy in general, a diehard romantic at heart, always crying at the happy endings of movies, watching elaborate marriage proposals online, smiling when a happy couple walked by. And I wanted Webber to be happy, too, so I decided I’d help take the edge and anxiety off of having no experience, so when he did find someone he wanted to be with, he’d feel confident about it, able to jump in with both feet. I pushed my earlier worries aside and decided I would be his first kiss.

  ***

“Come here,” I said. It was the day after our bookstore trip, and Webber still seemed bummed about it, so it was time to start helping him out. It went against school policy, and I couldn’t afford to get kicked out because there was no way I’d move back home, but I vowed to help him. Besides, it’d be our little secret.

He got up off his bed, and I got off of mine, and we stood facing each other in the center of our dorm room. I stepped in close and put my hand behind his neck, leaning in, lightly brushing my lips over his. He didn’t pull away, so I raked my hand through his hair and cupped the back of his head. He did the same to me, and tingles ran down my spine from my roommate’s hesitant touch. With my tongue, I parted his lips, and our kiss started off slow and gentle, but a moan escaped from him, igniting something in me. I pressed my mouth harder to his, sweeping my tongue in his mouth, our bodies drawing each other closer. The kiss was so warm and deep. His chest heaved against mine, and my breathing quickened. I ran my hand down his back, landing in the small of his back. As I rocked my hips to his, and I could feel he was already hard. With our cocks grinding together, I sucked on his bottom lip, and he pulled away.
