Prophecy, page 4
part #4 of Destine Academy Series
It took her three tries to unlock her room she was in such a hurry, and when she finally got in, she ran over to her backpack hanging on the back of the chair and rummaged through it for her schedule. Pulling it out, she scanned it until she found the Magiques first class for the day. At least she could let Nadine and Aldrick know what was going on. She didn’t know if they could help her, but at least if her friends knew what her aunt was doing, she wouldn’t feel so alone knowing they would at least try.
Dropping the schedule back into her backpack, she grabbed her school jumper and pulled it on over her head as she went to leave the room. Yet when she tried to open the door, it wouldn’t budge.
No…
Caroline tried everything she could think of, but the door was locked. She felt tricked, and she gave the door an angry kick.
No!
She froze as the smell of fresh, hot food wafted over to her. Caroline slowly turned around and found a glass cart between her and the desk. On the top shelf was a large plate with a silver dome over the top, with a smaller one beside it and what looked like orange juice and coffee. On the shelf below sat half a dozen bottles of water, a small bowl of fresh fruit and packets of crackers. Looking beyond it to her desk, Caroline’s mouth fell open as she saw the new shelf that had appeared above the desk, jammed with texts. More books were stacked up on the far end of the desk as well as on the floor. Walking slowly towards them, the seriousness of the situation finally dawned on her. She slumped into her chair, feeling lost but still too stunned to cry.
A burst of inspiration hit Caroline, and she grabbed her bag once more, this time withdrawing the laptop. Placing it on the desk before her, she opened it and opened up the school’s messenger app, quickly typing in Nadine’s name. The search came up with nothing. Frowning, she tried Corbin’s, then Aldrick’s and Tilda’s, but each time she typed in a name, she was given nothing. Confused, she was about to close the app when a buzzing, ringing noise sounded from the laptop, and her aunt’s face filled the screen.
“I might have forgotten to mention that I have full access to your laptop, and I have disabled your chat function except for myself. I’m sure this is a preferable way for me to keep tabs on your work without the disruptive nature of frequent knocks on the door. Do you have any questions?”
Caroline could only stare at her in shock at the lengths her aunt had gone to isolate her.
“No? In that case, I recommend eating your breakfast while it’s hot,” her aunt stated.
Caroline slammed the laptop closed. It felt good to shut her aunt up, and Caroline grinned to herself, allowing herself the brief triumph. Her appetite gone, she looked over the piles of books, unsure where to start. She wondered if she could convince her aunt to release her if she proved she would study hard without distraction. Grabbing the nearest book to her, she opened it to find an array of symbols she didn’t recognize and sighed. Caroline got up and grabbed the cup of coffee off the cart and took a swig as she sat back down. Looking back at the book before her, she smiled as the symbols moved and swirled before settling again. In her anger, she’d forgotten all about her Magiques ability. Placing the mug on the desk beside her, she leaned on her folded arms and let the pages turn one after the other as she scanned the text and symbols. As the first book closed, she glanced at the time and found that despite the thickness of the book, only half an hour had passed. Caroline grinned to herself, despite the stacks of books, and got up to go to the bathroom and give her mind a quick break.
Washing her hands in the sink, Caroline frowned as she felt the sudden sensation that she was being watched. Quickly looking over her shoulder towards the bathroom door and the bedroom beyond, she strained her ears, listening for any movement of someone in her room. There was nothing, but the sensation didn’t pass. Wiping her hands on the towel hanging by the sink, Caroline glanced up at the mirror and froze.
A frost crept inward from the edges of the mirror, and Caroline gasped as cold air filled her lungs, coming out in puffs of fog. Leaning forward, she peered into the mirror, which revealed a room that wasn’t the one she was in. Through the mirror, Caroline could see dark grey stone, rough and uneven, making up the walls. Loose dirt coated the floor, and she thought she might have been looking into a cave.
A flicker of light seemed to dance off the walls to the left, and Caroline leaned closer, trying to see its source. Her hands covered her mouth, and she stepped back as a hooded figure sauntered into the dark cavern, their head bowed so it was entirely hidden by the wide hood of the grey cape they wore. The light came from a small wooden torch they held in their hand, the powerful flame causing shadows to dance across the walls. Caroline lowered her hands, wanting to run out of the bathroom, closing the door behind her, but also needing to see what would happen next.
The figure shuffled forward, and Caroline tried to make out if it was male or female, but the cloak made it impossible to tell.
“Who are you?” Caroline asked aloud.
“My name is…Tempeste…Barrere…”
Caroline yelped and scrambled backward, hitting the wall behind her with force in her panic to get away from the mirror and stop the vision. Yet as she stood there, Tempeste continued her slow walk towards the mirror. Caroline’s heart thundered against her chest, but as she watched the hindered, shuffling way in which Tempeste approached, she wondered if the cult-leader was injured or impaired in some way. Her curiosity got the better off her, and she remained where she was.
“How are you here?”
“I’m not.” Tempeste’s voice was rasping, barely audible, and Caroline had to move closer again to hear her.
“Where are you then?”
“You’ll see for yourself in time,” Tempeste replied.
“How did you find me?”
“Once you unlocked the Voyante key, I was able to locate you on a different plane, no longer bound to the constraints of the physical world…” her voice trailed off into a sing-song murmuring that sent a shiver up Caroline’s spine. She wondered if she called out for help if her aunt would hear her.
“Don’t…” Tempeste instructed. “First, you must see.”
“See what?”
Tempeste raised her free hand, running her fingers under the edge of the hood as she raised her head. The hood fell back onto her shoulders, revealing a mirror image of Caroline.
Caroline screamed.
