“With the death of my sister, Headmistress Marguerite Destine, of Destine Academy, I know many of you are worried about the future of the school. I’m here today to confirm you have nothing to worry about. The school was left to the family—myself, and my daughter, Caroline. It’s been left up to me to decide how to move forward.”

“I plan to go on sabbatical.” He held his hands up as a cry of protest rose around the auditorium. “While it’s only been less than a year since my daughter first came to this school, it’s been a part of our family for much longer. It’s become my home, like it has for so many of you. There is no way I would ever let anyone take Destine Academy away from us. In order for the school to remain open, there must be a headmistress. In saying that, I know the perfect candidate for the role. This person has sacrificed a great deal for Destine Academy, and for my daughter, and I know she would never put the school or any of its students at risk. Which is why I’d like to ask this person to come to the stage—Miss Eloise Aubert.”

Applause and cheers erupted around the auditorium, and Caroline grinned at the school’s response. Eloise ascended the stairs to the stage, her eyes filled with tears and her hand over her mouth. Caroline hugged her.

“I don’t even know what to say,” Eloise whispered.

“Say you’ll do it,” Caroline replied.

Eloise pulled back, wiping her eyes. “Of course, I’ll do it. It would be an honor.”

“Wonderful.” Caroline gave Eloise’s hands a quick squeeze and released her as Gaspar invited Eloise to address the school for the first time as headmistress. Caroline wrapped her arm around her father’s waist, and he placed his arm across her shoulders as they watched Eloise confidently speak.

“I’m so proud of you.” Her father said quietly.

  “Thanks, Dad.”

“Do you think things will be okay while I’m away?” he asked.

Caroline looked up at her father and smiled. “Yeah, Dad. I think everything’s going to be fine.”

Enjoy This Book? I would love to hear from you…

Thank you very much for downloading my eBook. I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I did writing it!

Reviews of my books are an incredibly valuable tool in my arsenal for getting attention. Unfortunately, as an independent author I do not have the deep pockets of the Big City publishing firms. This means you will not see my book cover on the Subway or in TV ads.

  (Maybe one day!)

But I do have something much more powerful and effective than that, and it’s something that those publishers would kill to get their hands on:

A WONDERFUL bunch of readers who are committed and loyal.

Honest reviews of my books help get the attention of other readers.

If you enjoyed this book, could you help me write even better books in the future? I will be eternally grateful if you could spend just two minutes leaving a review (it can be as short as you like):

Writing a book is a labor of love, and when you put so much of yourself into something, you have to have the right tunes to get you in the perfect mood to create and craft. Here was the playlist I made to listen to while I wrote Betrayal. I hope you enjoy the songs, and maybe you’ll pick up a new favorite artist or two!
