  Chapter One

"Mommy!" I screamed from the spot she had hidden me. The room was getting hot, and smoke was filling in the small crawl space behind the hidden door. I coughed and dropped to my belly on the floor, coughing as I tried to scream for her again. The fire had spread further through the rooms, and the house was now fully engulfed in flames. I could hear the fire crackling and beams splitting and falling as it made its way up the walls and ceiling just outside my hiding space. I sank lower to the floor, coughing, tears burning my eyes and nose. She told me not to move until she came back for me. How was she supposed to reach me now? I thought to myself. I remember she had told me to wait, but if something happened to move through the rest of the crawl space and it leads to the tunnels below the house. Coughing on more smoke, I turned on my belly and made my way to the back panel. Feeling along the baseboard as my mommy had shown me, I found the spot and pushed. The hidden door moved and slid open. I crawled through the space that was only big enough for my small form. I wasn't very tall yet, at only six years old, but I knew what I was supposed to do. Mommy and daddy had shown me the crawl space and tunnels many times. We practiced what to do in case of an emergency. I sucked in a full breath as I made my way down into the tunnel. There was no smoke from the burning house as the tunnels were well beneath the foundation, so I wouldn't have to worry if the floor began to cave in. The tunnel was really dark, but it didn't bother me. See, I was not any ordinary girl; I was a werewolf. Yes, I was only six, and I hadn't fully gotten my wolf yet, but I still had a heightened sense of smell, hearing, and sight. After crawling a little way, I finally reached the main part of the tunnel and stood up. Sniffing and rubbing my nose on the back of my sleeve, I tried to be brave. Mommy and daddy said they would come back for me, and if I wasn't in the space, they left me they knew I would be at the exit of the tunnel. I slowly made my way to the end of the tunnel. It was a long walk; the tunnel ran almost the whole length of my pack's territory. I took another deep breath, and I tried to be as quiet as possible. Not many knew the tunnel was here; it was only to be used for emergencies, and this was an emergency. My thoughts drifted back to a few hours ago…

I had been sitting at the kitchen table with my mommy and daddy, having my favorite chocolate chip pancakes. I swung my legs and bounced up and down as mommy placed them in front of me, and I started digging in. "Hey there, pumpkin, slow down," my dad said, laughing. I grinned with a mouth full of pancakes and shook my head. "To Yummy!" I said between bites. He laughed, and so did mommy. "Well, you better be thankful to the Moon Goddess for blessing me with cooking skills," mommy said, sitting next to daddy. He leaned over and planted a kiss on her cheek, and she sighed, looking at him with loving eyes. I smiled at them. Daddy went back to drinking his coffee, and mommy watched me for a minute before asking me, "What do you want to do today?" I looked up at her swallowing another big bite of my pancakes. "You mean you can play with me today?" I asked, beaming. Both daddy and mommy chuckled. My parents were always so busy with the pack stuff. I didn't mind, though; I knew how important their jobs were. My daddy was best friends with the Alpha of our pack and his second; I believe he told me once he was known as the Beta. Mommy helped daddy with a lot of his work and many other things around the pack. They always made time for me, though. Daddy started to say something when he stopped talking and stood to his feet. Making mommy and I jump. His eyes were focused on the other side of the room. He must be hearing a message from someone in the pack. Daddy told me when you get bigger; you can talk to other wolves through something called a mind-link. Only werewolves can do this and only when you get big enough, and your wolf has awakened in you. I look at mommy, and she is looking at daddy with a worried expression. Are they going to have to go to work? Is that why mommy looks so worried and daddy? I won't be upset, they will make it up to me, and they always do. Mommy always said she had the best little wolf because I didn't get upset with them for having so much to do. I wouldn't get upset; they always kept their promises. Daddy blinked a few times and looked right at mommy. "There is an attack on the southern border," he said, and mommy stood to her feet. "How bad is it?" she asked; I could hear how worried she was. I glanced between them both, not sure what was going on. "Get Accalia to the space," he growled. Daddy turned to leave, then turned back and kissed mommy, locking eyes with her for a minute before giving me a kiss on my head and running out of the room. Mommy wasted no time scooping me up and dashing for my bedroom. She put me down and pushed the special place on the wall. After the cubby opened, she rushed me in. I sat down and looked at her with my eyes wide and welling up with tears. Mommy and daddy never looked this worried. She kissed my head and tried her best to smile at me. I could feel her worry, though. "Baby, I need you to stay here just like we practiced," mommy said. I could only agree by nodding my head. She leaned in and kissed my forehead, and rested her head against mine. "Moon Goddess," she said, "Keep my baby safe." She kissed me one more time. "Accalia, remember what we practiced. I will be back for you, or your daddy will. Do not move until we come for you, understand?" I nodded again, and mommy closed the space. I leaned against one of the walls and took a deep breath as a few tears slid down my face. It will be ok, I thought to myself. Mommy and Daddy will be back….

I scuffed my feet a little as I kept walking. I forgot how long this tunnel is. I had only walked it a few times, but it was with mommy and daddy, so it didn't feel like it was that long. After what seemed like forever, I could hear the sound of running water. I picked up my pace; maybe they were already there waiting for me. The end of the tunnel was behind a huge waterfall. Daddy and mommy said it was magic. You couldn't see the entrance to the tunnel because a witch had put a spell on it. This made it so only those who knew it was here could go through. Daddy said it also hid our scent so no one could smell us and find it. As I neared the end of the tunnel, I heard voices through the waterfall. I picked up my pace but suddenly stopped. That didn't sound like Mommy…. Or daddy…. I sniffed a few times, making a face. That smell was awful. I moved a little closer and could hear two men talking. "How long are we supposed to wait out here," one said with a gruff voice. The other man sighed. "Until the pack is overthrown and that sorry excuse for an Alpha and Beta is dead." My eyes widened. My daddy? Why would they want to hurt my daddy? And the Alpha. He is so nice. Why would they want them to die? I shook my head; it didn't matter. My daddy and Alpha are strong. They will see mommy and daddy soon would be here, and they would kick these guys' butts for talking about them like that. I heard a howl in the distance, and one of the guys sounded excited. "That's the signal!" he half-shouted. The other man sounded just as excited. "Holy shit! They actually did it." Did what? I thought, "I know!" said the other man excitedly, "I can't believe it! We actually won!" Did they win? I thought to myself. "Serves that pack right for taking over all the rogues' territory. That Alpha and his whole pack deserved to die," spat one of the men. I wasn't sure who was talking at this point as my eyes were burning from tears, and I was having a hard time not sniffling. I jumped as both men let out a howl. "Let's go hunt the stragglers," one of them said. "Yes, I can't wait to get some of this action."None left alive," he asked as I could hear them start to move away from the tunnel. "None left alive," he said. I shivered. I may have only been a child, but I knew what a rogue was. True I hadn't ever seen one, but daddy had made sure I knew, and they were dangerous. After a few moments, all I could hear was the waterfall and birds chirping. I sat down next to the entrance to the tunnel and sniffled. Those men couldn't be right. Could they? My mommy and daddy couldn't be gone. Were they? Tears rolled down my cheeks, and I curled up on the hard stone floor of the tunnel. Pulling my legs to my chest, I cried. "Mommy…. Daddy…. Where are you...? "I sobbed.

"WAKE UP!" A voice screamed at me. I gasped as I was hit with cold water. Sitting up straight. "Breakfast isn't going to make itself!" grumbled the voice. I recognized it as Mrs. Pratt, the head cook in the kitchen. I groaned, placing my head in my hands. I hadn't had that dream in a long time. It was a long time ago, but it still played over exactly as it had happened. "Accalia!!" Mrs. Pratt screamed. I sighed, getting up from my small bed that was tucked in the backside of the kitchen. I made my way to the sink and scrubbed my face and arms with the cold water. The small area I call my room used to be a small washroom but was turned into a bedroom for me after I was placed here. I think it was the only thing that I had ever done that had made Mrs. Pratt happy. Because I took the small wash/bathroom, she got a newer, nicer washroom added. That probably had hot water. This might not have come directly from me, but it was because of me she got it. "I swear if you don't move, I'm coming back in there," Mrs. Pratt yelled again. I didn't bother to answer her; she was never interested in what I had to say. It either earned me a smack or more screaming, so I hurried out to the main part of the kitchen, grabbing my apron. "Did you wash your hands!?" she sneered at me. My back turned to her, and I rolled my eyes. SMACK! I was hit in the back of the head. It took everything I had not to growl at her. "Yes…" I answered through gritted teeth. "Good, at least its one thing you do right around here. Now get going on the pancakes, sausage, bacon, eggs, and don't forget to put the biscuits in the oven." she rattled off the list. I guess she wanted a verbal response today, so I answered, "Yes, Mrs. Pratt." And got to work moving around the kitchen. My wolf stirred in the back of my mind. I could feel her annoyance and pacing. I hadn't let her out in a while, and she was getting restless. On top of that, she did not handle disrespect well. "Calm down," I thought to her. "We can't flip out like the last time it almost got us tossed out." I was met with a low growl, making me roll my eyes. "Do I need to remind you what happened the last time?" I asked her. I was met with a puff sound. I sighed and continued on with my list for the morning. After a few hours of prep work and main cooking. I was busy cleaning every square inch of the kitchen. Seriously I don't know why they even keep Mrs. Pratt around. I do all the work. But like they would let me run anything in this pack. I wasn't even considered part of it. After everything that happened all those years ago, it had taken me days to move from my spot in the tunnel. I was half-starved and barely alive when I had finally stumbled upon another pack's territory. The Silver River Pack, to be precise. I know now that it was only because of my age that I was spared. I had been in the pack's hospital for a few weeks and questioned a dozen times about where I came from. I refused to answer. I was still terrified at the time that they would kill me. After all, those men in the woods had said no one left alive. The pack's Alpha, his name was Eric, came to the conclusion I was not from any of their alli packs, so I must be a rogue and gotten lost so they would just keep me as one of the omegas. Without any information from me and knowing my heritage, that's all I could be. After all, rogues were outcasts in the werewolf world. They were not deemed as strong or of any use to our kind. If he only knew the truth, I was far from an omega. I was the daughter of a Beta. It didn't take me long to figure out though this pack was far from the one I had known. They were cruel and abusive. Not just mentally but physically. Alpha Eric was all about power, so if he knew I was more, he would use me in whatever way he saw fit. Because of this, I decided to keep my secrets. I had finally finished the floors and stood up, stretching my back as it pooped all up my spine. Mrs. Pratt walked back in and looked around. I knew it was clean, but like I would ask if it was up to her standard. She would find something wrong and make me start all over again. "I'm going for a run." I said to her as I put the bucket and rag back into the closet; I glanced at her. They say a fat chef is a trusted one. Maybe that is why they let her be in charge. Not a true statement though, I cook circles around her. Plus, I'm skinny, almost too skinny. Not that it's my choice, I never get a full meal; pros to being sent to the kitchen, it was far easier to sneak food. Not a lot because it would definitely be noticed if I gained weight but enough. Mrs. Pratt narrowed her eyes at me. She was a short, stocky older woman. She has a rounder face and green eyes. Her blond hair was pulled high in a tight bun. I wasn't really waiting for a response. I learned to never ask for permission; it was always met with a no, so I just bluntly said what I was going to do and stand my ground. However, that is how I got into a lot of trouble. I had been kicked out of every omega position in the whole pack. This really was my last spot, and the Alpha made it clear that he was done giving me chances. "You won't be telling me what you are going to be doing, Missy,'' she said, waving her fat little finger at me. I wanted to rip it off, but I narrowed my eyes instead. She shifted uncomfortably under my gaze. Most of the pack would feel uncomfortable when I gave that look, not fully understanding why I made them feel uncomfortable, so they would cry to the Alpha. Of course, they didn't mention that they could feel a power above their own. This would make them less than me, and they refused to be less than an orphaned labeled omega. Mrs. Pratt cleared her throat, not looking at me, "You may go. But you had better be back before lunch prep. I didn't agree to have you here so I could pick up all your slack." she said, still not looking at me. I grind my teeth but just nodded as I hung my apron on the hook and made my way out the back door. I took a deep breath as I made my way towards the northern border. I always walked with my head high. I didn't care that this pack saw me as less than they were. I may be an orphan and the last of my pack, but they would never know the truth. After a short walk, I made it to the tree line. I stepped behind a tree and stripped out of my clothes. Placing them in the tree hollow, I didn't have a lot of clothes, so I didn't like to leave them sitting. The last time I did, they came up missing. The accident, I think not. After a few minutes, I felt the warmth come over my skin. I could feel my wolf brushing up against my skin, and she purred in happiness, making me smile. My whole body vibrated; it was only slightly painful as my bones started to crack and reshape. I had gone too long between my shifts, and that caused it to be painful. It didn't take long, and soon I stood in my wolf form. I shook out my fur. Digging my clawed paws into the soil as I stretched. God, this felt amazing. It really had been too long. I shot forward, enjoying the breeze through my fur as I made my way through the trees. I was really fast. I never ran with anyone in this pack, but I knew they couldn't keep up. I had been chased a few times by some of the pack members, and they never could catch me. I slowed my pace as I neared the edge of the northern border. I circled around a cliff's edge to make my way to my favorite spot. A crystal clear pool of water sat in a small area surrounded by one side of the cliffs before dropping again on the other side. I walked over to it and stared down at my reflection. My wolf was beautiful. She had full midnight black fur, just like my long hair in my human form. Her blue eyes showed even bluer than my regular ones. The tips of my front paws had pure white fur, making my black claws pop out. But the unique thing about her was the crescent moon shape surrounding my left eye. I had never seen another wolf with this mark. However, no one knew fully what my wolf looked like either. I had never run with the pack, and I never shifted in front of them either. If anyone came near, I ran. They had made it clear I didn't belong here, so why would I waste my wolf's time. After a few moments of pacing the water's edge, I stepped back and let my wolf take full control. I laughed as she lunged into the water. It was deep, but it didn't bother her; she liked to swim. We paddled around the pool for a while. Getting in and out chasing frogs. I laughed when she would catch one because it tasted disgusting. I loved spending time with her. She wasn't normally much for conversation, but she didn't like it here. She would stay quiet, or like I had reminded her before, we would get into trouble. This was hard for her, but still, we enjoyed each other's company. Finally, she had gotten bored, so we made our way to the edge of the small cliff and sprawled out on the soft moss. She had stepped back to give me control, and I sighed, laying my head on my paws and looked out over the trees. "Accalia..." my wolf spoke. "Yes, Neoma," I answered. "We can't stay here forever…." She said; I sighed; we had, had this conversation many times. "What would you have me do? Become a rogue just like those that killed my parents." Neoma whined in the back of my mind. Ok, maybe that was a bit harsh; I knew how bad she wanted to leave. She couldn't stand the way we were treated, and if I am honest, I couldn't either. "You know that we are basically rogue here anyways…." Neoma said, trailing off as I let out a growl. "I AM NOT A ROGUE!" I yelled at her. "We do not pack either," she said. I knew she was right. We didn't speak for a long time, and I was starting to think she might go back to giving me the silent treatment when she spoke, "Here they see us as omega, outcast, a rogue…. Accalia, we are better than what they say we are. We are not rogue if we leave. We are lone wolves. The last of our true pack. The last of the Moon Light Pack." I could feel pride swell in our chest. "What truly keeps us here?" she asked. I couldn't answer. "If you want to go back and continue to waste the life the Moon Goddess has given us, I will not fight you. But don't lie to yourself. We have the choice of Accalia. Your mother and father wanted more for you. You have a choice." She said before going silent. Had I been in my human form, tears would be rolling down my face? Neoma never brought up my parents; she knew the pain it caused me. I stood tall and closed my eyes, breathing in the fresh air. "Moon Goddess… guide us." I said before stepping back and giving full control back to Neoma. She let out a prideful howl before we made our way off the cliff edge down a small path to the bottom. "You won't regret this, Accalia." She said as she ran full speed to the edge of the border and not looking back as we broke through the territory line. I hope not….
