He stood to follow her out, but she stopped him.
“You should rest. I can see myself out.”
And she did.
The apartment seemed much emptier than it had before she came. It was quiet. Too quiet. The refrigerator hummed and he could hear faint music coming from one of the other apartments. Otherwise, he was alone and all too aware of it now.
He almost wished she hadn’t come. It made him too aware of what he’d lost.
He heaved himself off the sofa, recorked the wine bottle, returned it to the fridge, and then went to take that shower he’d been planning on taking when Ashley had arrived.
Finally, wearing jeans and a Georgetown sweatshirt, he sat down to take a look at what Ashley had thought he’d want to see.
It was a printout of a news story about a young woman, Caitlin Trahan, who had gone missing. The only sign of her was a backpack found near where she was last seen. With his first glance at the photo of the dark-haired pale-skinned teenager, Morgan thought it was a printout of an old article about Fiona. The details were so similar, and the young woman looked so much like Fiona.
It was clear to him why Ashley would have thought of Fiona when she saw it.
He had to sit down when he looked at the date on the article. It was only two weeks ago. This young woman had disappeared less than a month ago.
He quickly scanned the article and a chill crept up his spine. There were so many parallels. Caitlin had been walking home from an after-school activity, something she did often. One friend had even seen her walking and had stopped to see if she’d wanted a ride. She’d said no.
That was the last time she was seen.
A week after that, her backpack was found flung up in a tree. Her wallet had been in the backpack and still had money in it, so it wasn’t a robbery gone bad.
There’d also been a photo of another young woman who looked a good deal like Caitlin and like Fiona, for that matter. The paper had printed a reproduction of the photo in case someone might recognize the young woman in the hope that she might be able to provide some lead of where to look for Caitlin.
So far, no one had come forward.
Morgan squinted at the photo. There’d been writing on the edge of it, just like the one in Fiona’s backpack. He tried to make out the year. He was pretty sure the date was a year from now.
The cases were nearly identical. The two young women were nearly identical. There was no way that this was a coincidence.
Either whoever had abducted this young woman was a copycat of the person who had abducted Fiona, or it was the same person.
