As Book 5 opened, the Harlem Armory was under attack. Falcon Drones went into action, killing the attackers at the park across the street. Mayor Fine and Chief Harvey also sent hybrids over to patrol.

Albena was watching the action, and saw that many Islamists were involved in the armory attack. She used municipal video history to follow them backwards to their base, and then looked at the neighborhood, seeing it was controlled by Islamists, then expanded her search, seeing other neighborhoods that had been taken over. She notified Chief Harvey and Jace.

Claude was with Sturm in a hideout. Sturm’s left hand was hit with a hollow point bullet during the attack at the Tunisian Embassy, and his thumb and three of his fingers were gone. Claude knew he had to amputate the hand before gangrene could set in. Sturm was left-handed, so it was better to have a prosthetic than a hand that was non-functional. He called Sanchez and told him of his plan. Sturm reacted violently at first, but agreed to the amputation the next day, so Claude performed it.

The Paine Society and the Sons of Liberty met at the Hanscom base. Art gave hybrids to the Paine Society and trained them. There was also a meeting with Jared, where he welcomed the Paine Society to the team, told them of the Islamist incursions they’d discovered in the Atlantic states, and showed them the new Roach Drone/Target Designators he’d just delivered to Art.

UN Peacekeepers who were stopped from invading Manhattan were waiting on Randall’s Island for pickup by the EU Navy, which was steaming through Long Island Sound. The Peacekeepers were scared, close to mutiny. Three EU Navy ships approached the wharf, American civilians opening fire on the UN Peacekeepers. One of the EU ships opened fire on the Americans with machine guns and artillery. The three ships took off after they’d loaded the Peacekeepers, heading back into the Long Island Sound.

Half of the Blockbusters at the armory were directed to roadblocks with machine gun nests in the nearby Islamist no-go zone, so citizens could storm the area. Fire from the M19s made short work of the roadblocks, the citizens rushing in and taking control of the zone, killing many Islamist fighters. The battle for the armory started, Islamist Fighters coming out of the woodwork on several streets, the hybrids and blockbusters there to take them on, armed citizens showing up in large numbers, the battle raging over several blocks to the north and west of the armory. Then a sizeable group of enemy fighters approached in vehicles from the south, coming up Madison Avenue, several Blockbusters getting into position to attack them. They stopped the column, most of the Blockbusters using up all their grenades, forcing them to retreat and reload. The surviving enemy forces retreated. Everybody realized that the dangerous WMDs had to be removed from the Harlem armory. Chief Harvey contacted the Navy, getting an agreement from them that two Zumwalt Destroyers would come to the Harlem River and pick up the material, so they could dump it at sea.

The three EU ships were attacked as they got to the Atlantic, one with a torpedo from a sub, the other two by missiles from two Zumwalt Destroyers. The crews and UN Peacekeepers on board were killed. After the battle, the Zumwalt Destroyers cruised into Long Island Sound, heading for the Harlem River.

Jay Green, the Sons Of Liberty’s intel source in Boston, told them of a new base, next to the South Boston train station. Henry held a meeting with the combined team in Hanscom to brief them, and they planned to try out the new roach drones there. The Sons of Liberty also agreed to take their new partners to the primary base in Downtown Boston.

At UN Headquarters, the natural gas finally ran out, stopping their generator. Jerry Poole talked Sanchez into a blockade run to get supplies. Sanchez balked when Poole told him they should kill as many NYPD officers as possible during the operation, but Poole told him if he didn’t go along, Daan Mertins would have him removed.

Ross of the Paine Society finally got a bite on the trap he set to find the UN spies in their organization. They were at an ammo dump, which was on the way to Boston. The group decided to swing by, release roach drones, and attack if it looked feasible.

Mayor Fine asked Dannon to check out the area around the Harlem armory for trouble spots before the Zumwalt Destroyers arrived to pick up the sarin. He noticed the subway station on the far side of the park, and called the mayor and police chief, suggesting that his team go down there. He also asked if they could order some Kevlar jump suits for his team. Chief Harvey had some at his headquarters, from a study they did. He agreed to provide them. Dannon, Dempsey, and the team took off for the main bunker, picked up by mole vehicles at a nearby subway station. They arrived at the main bunker and got the suits, which were like the one Dannon had, but with a few less pockets. They stopped by the intel room on the way out, seeing the Mayor and Governor McCain watching the TV screen, showing the Capitol Building in DC ablaze.

Sturm woke up from his amputation, and talked to Claude, who filled him in on the recent defeat at the Harlem armory, the sinking of the EU Navy ships, the Zumwalt Destroyers coming towards the Harlem River, and the blockade run Sanchez and Poole were setting up at UN Headquarters. Sturm realized that Mateo’s plans for the armory and the sarin were good ideas, and said he would attempt to bury the hatchet, at least until they got Manhattan under control.

The Paine Society and Sons of Liberty found UN Peacekeepers at the ammo dump and attacked with the missiles, driven by the roach drone target designators, blowing up both buildings they were in. Then they discovered armored vehicles in the woods behind one of the buildings, which attempted to nail them, tagging Jax’s hybrid, taking it out of action. The team destroyed the armored vehicles with their missiles, blowing up Jax’s broken hybrid on the way out.

At UN Headquarters, the Peacekeepers opened fire on the NYPD, killing many before Chief Harvey ordered his men to fire back. The UN blew the barricades with explosives just as the NYPD started returning fire, and three semi-trucks with natural gas tanks hidden inside drove through the gate under a hail of bullets, as the UN’s Browning .50 cal laid down cover fire. Then two Blockbusters arrived, one of them firing, hitting the cab of one of the semi-trucks. The Browning machinegun hit one Blockbuster, killing Clifford, the other men getting out, as the second Blockbuster attacked, destroying the Browning, then blowing up all three semis full of natural gas, causing a sea of flame. They also fired at the main UN building, hitting the room Jerry Poole was in, killing him.

President Simpson and his cabinet were on Airforce 1, headed for an un-disclosed location after the attack on the US Capitol building. Simpson told his team that emails had been hacked, showing they were involved in the beginning of the war, and the nuclear attacks. After bickering over it, the cabinet agreed that staying alive would have to be their priority.

Daan called Mateo, telling him he couldn’t raise Sanchez or Jerry Poole. Mateo had their private numbers, and got Sanchez on the phone. Daan put Mateo back in charge of the Atlantic Forces of the UN, and left Sanchez in charge of UN Headquarters. He instructed Mateo to take the gloves off, and become a terror to the resistance.

Dannon, Dempsey, and their team arrived at the subway station by the Harlem armory, and found several UN Peacekeepers and crates of LAW rockets and grenades there. They killed the Peacekeepers and took the weapons, distributing grenades between them. Then they left the subway station for the park, to witness the sarin transfer and help if needed.

John Clancy finished his first chapter for the Sons of Liberty and sent it off. Linda told him she’d have to cut contact with Pat, after a nasty phone call with her. Then Salvatore arrived, telling them they needed to rescue Craig and other patriots, due to changes of leadership at the prison. The operation was to happen later that evening, and it was risky.

>
The two Zumwalt Destroyers arrived on the Harlem River, so the patriot teams converged on the area, ready to cover the hand-off. The armory team loaded the sarin package into one of the armored vehicles, and got behind two of the others, the fourth following them down the road. They were attacked in the intersection in front of the bridge, tires hit with machinegun fire, but Kemp’s vehicle kept going with one flat tire, as the hybrids, Blockbusters, and Falcon Drones got into the fight. Kemp’s vehicle got next to the crane on the Zumwalt, ready to make the transfer. Gunfire raged around them, so Kemp called Dannon, who said he was on his way, him and Dempsey leading their team into the area, firing their M4s on the run, pushing the Islamists with their LAW rockets back, as more Falcon Drones dived at them. Kemp’s team got the package into the net, the crane officer lifting it, and then machinegun fire erupted from the fifth floor of a building across the street, the men struggling to return fire, the enemy commandos moving from one window to another, killing Officer Rogers. Dannon couldn’t get there fast enough, and told Kemp to ask the ship captain to open fire. Kemp called him, and the captain fired both his Bushmasters, killing the enemy commandos and doing a lot of damage to the building, parts of it falling, killing Officer Nelson. The package made it on the deck, and the Zumwalt left the area quickly.

Two of Salvatore’s men rescued Craig, shooting their way out of the prison yard, picked up by a chopper.

The Paine Society and Sons of Liberty went to the building next to the South Station and released roach drones, then left the area without being seen. The video feeds showed Islamists and UN Peacekeepers inside the buildings, plus rows and rows of white vans and stockpiles of weapons. It looked like an attack was imminent.

A UN Peacekeeper pounded on Pat Smetana’s door in the middle of the night. It was Oscar, who’d been trying to turn her. He told her that Craig escaped from prison that night, and she was being put under house arrest, saying he would move in at once and stay with her.

Dannon, Dempsey, and their team went to a subway station, following up on the tip from earlier, finding the station and the subway tunnel full of Islamists, more than they could take on. The mole vehicles arrived, Eve opening fire, killing many enemy fighters in the tunnels, most escaping back onto the platform, Dempsey, Dannon, and the others opening fire and tossing grenades, but not able to stop all of them, many getting to the street exit, where two Blockbusters were waiting, firing grenades into the entrance. Hickey got hit in the head during the battle. The rest barely got out of the station with their lives. The enemy had messed with the video cameras in the subway tunnel, because Albena couldn’t see anybody there, even while the battle was going on.

Ross and Jaak were watching roach drone video as the hybrid teams made it back to the downtown Boston base. They got a drone into the enemy’s conference room and listened to a meeting, where a large-scale operation to happen the next morning was discussed. They planned to hit the enemy base with their missiles later that evening.

Janey and her family were on the way to Hector Quay after three days with Chaz and Ruth at Green’s Point. Chaz called, saying the UN was there looking for them. As Janey listened, the UN Peacekeepers shot Ruth and Chaz, a Peacekeeper getting on the phone, saying they’d see them in Hector Quay.

Sturm was fitted with his prosthetic hand, and was impressed with the way it worked. He would be able to shoot guns and do other things with it, but there were many hours of practice ahead of him.

Daan held a conference call with President Simpson, Saladin, Charles, and the others on the executive team, where they discussed the leaked emails, and what to do next. Most of the leadership had moved into hiding, Saladin demanding to know where they were, but none of them willing to say. Daan told them he had the Speaker of the House killed, and President Simpson said that was a massive mistake, because she was holding back the emails from the public, over the objections of the Intel Committee. They discussed who would take over as President, but their options weren’t good, as almost everybody in the administration was exposed by the emails.

The Sons of Liberty and the Paine Society started their attack on the building next to the South Station in Boston, hitting them with 30 laser guided missiles, then using more to hit the areas that survived, plus some semi-trucks that were trying to escape, and the rows of white vans in the back parking lot. Most of the team were in standard cars, but there were several hybrids there as well, and three of them took off after three semis that escaped. They stopped the semis, but there were too many Islamists flooding out, so they used roach drones to designate the area, missiles coming in from Ashley’s launcher. Citizens arrived a moment later, the hybrid team choosing to flee after that, so they wouldn’t hit innocents.

Pat went to bed, her guard Oscar sleeping on the couch in the living room of her house. After she settled in, Oscar came into the bedroom and raped her, Pat pretending to enjoy it, letting him drift off to sleep afterwards. She went to the kitchen and grabbed a butcher knife, using it to slit Oscar’s throat. Then she loaded the truck with her canoe, camping equipment, and weapons, heading for the Schuylkill River, seeing armed citizens in the back of a pickup truck kill UN Peacekeepers at a checkpoint on the way. She encountered two other UN Peacekeepers further down the highway and killed both, then went to the river, launching her canoe, paddling away. She posted a message to Jacob and Sunshine’s web page, saying who she was and what she did, encouraging others to kill as many of the invaders as possible.

Albena, Penko, Mayor Fine, Cary, and others worked the subway camera problem, using Albena’s control over the tunnel flood lights to check each camera, finding many replaced by the enemy, including the cameras under New City Hall and NYPD Headquarters.

Dannon, Dempsey, and the rest of the team made it back to their hideout, having to tell Shell and Dr. Saperstein that Hickey was killed. As they were grieving, Dannon got a text from Mayor Fine. There was a plan to use the mole vehicles to place Falcon Drones with their charging stands in the subway, instead of just replacing the cameras the enemy had compromised. The Mayor asked if his team could help. The team agreed, and got ready to leave…

  Tunnel Drones

D annon walked to his trunks in the back room, opening the ammo trunk. “Hey guys, let’s reload before we go.”

Freeze, Jones, and Moth rushed in, taking weapons out of the pockets in their Kevlar jumpsuits.

“Dempsey will be here in a minute,” Jones said, “he’s helping Shell with her suit.”

“I’d like to help her with that,” Moth cracked, Jones shaking his head.

“I’ll get some weapons out for her,” Dannon said, opening the trunk next to the ammo trunk. “She knows how to shoot, right?”

“She’s good,” Freeze said. “I wouldn’t want to piss the bitch off.”

“What was that?” Shell asked, standing at the door.

“Come here, let’s get some guns for you,” Dannon said to her. She went over to the trunk, Dempsey coming in and reloading his weapons next to the others.

“What kind of experience do you have?” Dannon asked.

“I’m good with pistols,” she said, picking up a Glock19. “I’ve fired these before. Had one, but the cops got it.”

“Good choice,” Dannon said. “You say you’re good. How good?”

Dempsey laughed. “Standing still she’s better than I am. I’ve got her while running, though.”

Dannon nodded. “You’re better than anybody I’ve ever seen while running, to be honest, and I know a lot of folks who do this kind of work.”

“I’ll get better at that,” Shell said. “How about carbines?”

“I don’t think you should bother with that on this operation,” Dannon said. “Next time. We need some more stock, for one thing. All we got left are a couple AKs we grabbed from the Tunisian Embassy job. Jones and Dempsey both have carbines, and me. That’s enough.”
