“If you’d walked away, Ruth Ann would be dead now. Custer Grady might have continued on out of town, just as he was planning to. John Lee would probably be dead as well. You needed resolution, Abby. There’s nothing wrong in that.”
“Yeah.” She glanced over at the clock, ticking reassuringly in the corner. Even in here, time passed. “I need to visit John Lee.”
“Of course.” He nodded and stood, polite as always. She gathered her purse one-handed—they’d had to reset the bone in her left arm, but the ache was going away now—and was almost to the door before a pink corner of paper sticking out of her purse reminded her of something.
“Oh. Here.” She handed him a printed flyer. He studied it, eyebrows rising.
“A memorial concert for Terry Bollinger?”
“Yeah. I’m going to play the Mozart concerto as soon as my arm heals.”
He smiled and offered her his hand. When she took it, he said “I thought you had a fear of performing,” and she smiled and then laughed out loud.
“I’m not afraid of anything.”
