Rodney leaned back. “Just glad for your help to solve them, Bell.”

He looked around, brow raised. “By the way, where’s that crazy cat?”

Just then, an empty mug slid across the counter, nudged by nothing visible, tipped over the edge, and shattered against the tile.

Bell and Star exchanged a long look.

  They both sighed.

  “Back to normal,” Bell murmured.

By nine-thirty, The Magic Muffin was humming.

Coffee poured freely. Muffins disappeared by the dozen. Star smoothed the edges of her Mohawk, Bell wiped cinnamon glaze from the countertop, and Marmalade slept soundly in his cat bed behind the counter.

The regulars filled their booths: the Weaver sisters shared crossword clues over lemon poppyseed; Old Bill recited his third-hand weather prediction; and the church ladies tried not to complain about Star’s boots.

It was the kind of morning made just for Middleberry.

Until the bell over the door rang.

  And he stepped in.

Conversation stopped like someone had flipped a switch.

  A hush fell.

He wore a sloppy gray t-shirt that looked like he hadn’t changed it in twenty years, faded jeans with patches over the knees. His eyes, a piercing green, which had learned something bitter. His dusty brown hair striped with gray, and crows feet about his eyes. A bulbous nose stood out against his tanned face. Dirt clung to his shoes like he’d walked a long way. He stood just inside the doorway and looked around.

From a back booth, a whisper broke the stillness.

“I never thought he’d dare return to Middleberry.”

  Even Marmalade opened one eye.

  Bell set down the coffeepot.

  This was no ordinary morning.

Another mystery had just stepped through the door.
