About The Author
Chapter 1
As I looked to my right, the head of a large two-handed axe head filled my vision.
I shifted my body hard to the left, and barely dodged out the way. Turning to see my attacker, it was another one of the many Orcs wearing a ramshackle set of thick, roughly made plate armor. I finished my heavy downward chop, slicing my machete into the monster’s exposed neck, and let go of it as a spray of blood came out of the wound. The blood disintegrated in soft white light as it came out, the machete would take a bit of time to take effect, time I didn’t have to right now.
The monster didn’t appear to weaken or let up at all, and immediately used the two handed axes momentum to his advantage. He angled the weapon trying to hit me in the head with the handle. I dodged the attack, and the monster stumbled to the ground as a look of fright crossed its face. The humanoid's green skin started to go pale as its form started to shrink. He would be dead soon.
I backed off the monster, and grabbed a bundle of throwing knives right hand, a loud horn echoed nearby. Looking around me, the situation on the top of the Mellows outer gate was serious.
There were numerous heavy metal ladders attached onto the edge of the wall, which gave the horde of monsters below an easy way up. As I turned to look for any Guards that needed help, I saw many were barely able to handle the newly strengthened Orcs. All the defenders could do was to try and hold back as many of the monsters as possible, while trying to get close enough to take out any ladders in the process. They did their best against the relentless horde, but the monsters’ ferocity and numbers seemed endless.
As I was looking over the fight, four Orcs were coming directly at me with cruel looking swords in each of their hands. The monsters roared in glee at the idea of a lone opponent. They must have felt it would be an easy win for them, but that wasn’t going to happen.
My hands threw the blades as fast as they could, hitting the closest two of the Orcs between the makeshift heavy armors joints. Their eyes went wide as the knives started draining them immediately. The monsters grabbed at the knives and pulled fruitlessly, as I turned my attention to the other two attackers. They ignored their wounded brethren and ran at me yelling full of confidence.
“Don’t fight it human, You’re meant to be eaten by us!”
There were none of the Guards nearby, so it would be safe to do it. I gave up on being subtle, and tossed all the remaining knives in my hands. Half of the blades bounced off the thick metal armor that covered most of the monster's body. I hadn’t been able to practice using them much since I had used them last, but at this close of a range it didn’t matter, five of them stabbed into the last two monsters mid swing. Their eyes went wide at the sudden change.
I pulled two more handfuls of five knives each from the pouch on my belt. Only one of the Orcs with two blades in him was willing to continue the attack. The other had three stabbed into their sword arm which forced them to let go of their sword mid swing, sending it careening off the wall to the horde below.
I used one bundle of knives to block the incoming blade. The monster’s other arm was already halfway through an oncoming punch. The monster's speed was about half of mine, so I was able to intercept the attack with all five of the knives in my right hand. The monster's fist was a mess of blood and bone. The monster recoiled as its left arm went limp immediately. It yelled at me in protest.
“You will die like the rest, you filthy human! Lord Zarxen will kill you all!”
What?
There is another Lord of the monsters past the General? I thought that it was just the Dark Lord Mazor now or whatever their name was? The monster had backed away while the other Orc with only three knives in him had gotten up and had grabbed another weapon, it was mid swing when I noticed the attack. I completely gave up on any subtlety when I blocked its attack with my left handful of knives and sent a hard horizontal kick into the monster's armored side.
The Orc had the air knocked out of it, and tried to get some traction on the bloody stone blocks of the wall, but to no avail. The monster tumbled over the edge, back outside the city walls of Geases crying out as it fell to its brethren bellow. Looking around there were many more monsters on the wall, but the ladders were creating the real problem.
This was the only way for the monsters to get into the city right now. The gate had been filled in with rubble and a multitude of spikes. Forcing the monsters to make their way over the wall to make an attempt to attack the city.
I wasted no time and grabbed another bundle of knives in my right hand and rushed over to the nearest ladder. There was another Orc that just finished the ascent up the wall. It saw me as I approached and swung at me with its two heavy swords, it forced me to block with both handfuls of knives. I didn’t have time for this, I shoved the swords back at the Orc. They bounced off the monster's armor and went flat against the plate as half of each bundle stabbed into the monster’s flesh. It roared at me as I let go of the blades, and then pushed the monster off the edge of the wall.
Only a few feet away from the ladder, I turned to see another one almost on the wall. I rushed over and gave the ladder a hard kick. All the monsters on it cried out in various pitches as the ladder fell back onto the horde outside the wall.
Looking over the horde, most of the monsters were Orcs, with the rest of them being some kind of weird abominations. One of them fell off the ladder with a few others of its kind. The creature had the body of a lion, but was covered in scales. Where the monster's head should have been, was a wide circular mouth filled with long thin teeth. Right behind that, instead of hair making up a mane, were dozens of long thin tentacles with a sharp spike on the end of each of them. A frightening creature I had never seen before. The abominations cried out as it fell to the ground.
As I got my bearings again and looked around, the wall had numerous fights going on. The group of Guards to the right of me were fighting some of the Lion abominations. To my left, there was a floating brown ball of spikes diving at the defenders. Which side should I help? I knew that every second wasted would likely mean another dead Guard, so I rushed to the defense of the left side with the airborne abominations. If I missed with my blades it would likely only hit air, not people.
Making my way to the Guard group, there were only twelve left, against what seemed like over two dozen of the flying spiky abominations. Getting close enough to use my knives, they continued to dive at the Guards as I arrived.
“Watch out!!” A brown humanoid Lizard man yelled. It pointed at another dozen flying spiky abominations coming towards the group.
“More Spikys are on the way!” The scaled Guard cried out.
The group of defenders were already battered when I arrived, but now they were completely overwhelmed. The air was full of monsters as my hands kept throwing knives as fast as they could. I had thrown two handfuls of blades when a scream echoed to my left. Glancing over, one of the monster's bodies had opened up what looked like a mouth spanning its whole form and closed on the lizard man biting the reptile from its head down to its shoulders. The abomination started to fly up into the air with his victim in tow struggling to get free.
With no time to waste, I threw a few blades immediately, scoring two direct hits when a loud sizzling came fr
The thought that I should have used my guns ran through my head, but the intense melee would have made it almost impossible to not hit some of the Guards in the gunfire.
With rage pumping through my veins and filing my mind, I threw another eight blades at the beast with only half of them hitting the monster. The monster moved out over the horde of monsters just out of the range of my throwing knives. The abomination tried to float away scot free, but with that many of my blades in it, it was only a matter of time. The monster immediately started dropping quickly to the ground below with its victim in tow. A tiny bit of satisfaction rolled through me, but it was completely overwhelmed by the anger within me from what I just witnessed. Turning back to the diving monsters my hands flung blades completely disregarding accuracy as the air above the Guards was still teeming with the spiky abominations.
The flying monsters started noticing I was a bigger threat than the Guards. They started diving at me, but their much slower speed made their paths very predictable. Dodging to the side, and stabbing a handful of knives into the bodies of another dozen abominations, the beasts didn’t let up. Thankfully, their numbers were thinning at least, with only around eighteen of them left, it wouldn’t be long before they had been dealt with. Most of them had been stabbed by one of my blades already, so time was working both with me and against me right now. I had to keep up the pressure on the monsters, if not for me, for the Guards themselves. I couldn’t show any mercy to the monsters, ever.
There was another cry, turning to look, a young human male Guard was trying to hold back one of the spiky abominations, who was pushing him closer and closer to the edge of the wall. The monster’s mouth snapping at him relentlessly. He was out of my knives range, so I rushed to help him, but I already knew it was too late.
He let out a cry and fell off the wall as the monster bit down on the Guard’s shoulder. It floated out over the horde as the sizzling sound came from inside the monster and leaked out onto the young man's body. He screamed in pain as the liquid poured over him and started disintegrating the Guards body. The man struggled for a few seconds, but the beast pulled him deeper into its mouth as he finally died.
Everything I was burned with rage at the horrors I had seen in front of me. There was no time to waste. Turning back to the thinned number of monsters on the wall. Even one was far too many.
Rushing back to the Guards and filling the air with blades, the few remaining Spikys started dropping to the ground from all the Knives in them. A few landed on the wall, as the group of Guards attacked them with ruthless efficiency. Looking over the group they were bloody, sore and tired, but alive. I gave one a nod, before I turned and moved back to the other group of monsters dreading what had happened in the time that had passed.
As I turned a scream echoed over the wall. “Get it off me you faceless abomination!”
One of the Lions was on top of one of the half squid half humanoid species snapping at its smooth face. The Vulnis was barely holding back the abomination while the monster's spikes were stabbing ruthlessly into its body. The Guards here were outnumbered two to one with none of them able to even protect themselves, let alone anyone else.
Breaking into a run, I was able to span the distance in a few seconds. I recalled the machete on the way as the Guards screams kept cutting deeper into my already enraged soul. Yelling as I stabbed the heavy blade deep into the creature, then slamming my shoulder into it. The beast went flying off the wall, towards the thinning horde outside the city. Having passed the bleeding Vulnis it looked up in a daze as it struggled to move. But the wounds it had taken were not that deep, I couldn’t stay to help, there were others that needed my help as well.
I reached the group of faceless abominations. The monsters had kept up their attack on the Guards, and were completely unaware of my presence. There were only a few dozen on the wall, thankfully. Checking the overall situation, most of the ladders had been pushed off the wall. I glanced over the edge, and most of the horde were engaged in a bloody melee over the fallen monster's corpses. This thankfully left the few remaining ladders mostly unused.
With both my hands full of blades, I made my way towards the faceless lion abominations, and noticed they were slower than me, but much faster than the defenders. I saw my advantage, and I took it.
Rushing to the nearest Guard, I ran by a pair of the faceless monsters and stabbed a handful of blades into each of them, sending them hissing and skittering across the stone wall from my strike. They were already weakening quickly, the blade's absorption properties would finish them off in short order, if not the significantly weakened monsters would be easy work for the Guards. With no time to lose I kept moving onto the next ones.
After one more successful running stabbing there was another terrified scream. As I turned to look, it was an elf Guard covered in blood. Armed with only a triangular shield that covered most of her body, the woman didn’t have a weapon. She was surrounded by the dead bodies of her comrades, all killed by dozens of spike wounds. She was barely able to fend off the tentacle spikes of two Lion abominations, when one of them lunged at her. The elf tried to keep her unshielded arm protected, but one of the monsters moved around the shield and bit into it. She let out a cry.
“By Dranona, someone please help!”
Already halfway to her, I filled my hands with knives and rushed to help. One of the abominations noticed my approach and turned to face me. It roared and rushed at me with all of its spiked tentacles extended at me.
As I got close, and not taking any chances, I threw one knife at the creature, which sailed straight into its open mouth. The monster bit at it with the abomination seemingly unaffected by the radical increase in iron in its diet. The thought of taking the beast head on seemed like a terrible idea, so I shifted my momentum to pass by it, and attempted to get around all of its spikes. The monster then compensated for this and tried to bite me with its blood encrusted teeth as its spiked tentacles tried to stab me as well.
As I passed by the monster, it snapped at me, just barely missing my left hand. Right behind that was dozens of oncoming spikes that I tried to slice off with the blades in my other hand, but was only able to cut a few of them when they hit my brown padded jacket. Not feeling or caring if they did any damage. I swung at the tentacles with the blades in my left hand slicing through most of them as the monster cried out.
Nearly alongside the abomination, it tried to follow me with its mouth and attempted to stab me with its spiked tentacles on the way. I Barely dodged its attack on my legs, and rushed past it, pivoting, and stabbing a bundle of knives into the haunches of the beast. The force from my hit knocked the creature away and onto its side, which gave me a clear path to the elf and the other monster.
I rushed to the elves' aid. Some of the monster’s spikes had surrounded the shield, while the rest had embedded themselves into the outer sections of the shield itself. The abomination was trying to bite through the center of the defensive metal itself, but failing thankfully.
“It’s going to be ok!” I yelled as the monster had given up on the center of the defensive plate, and ripped off one edge of the shield with its mouth.
The woman retreated back towards her fallen comrades, but immediately slipped on the blood soaked stones and landed on a half eaten corpse. The abomination tossed the crumpled metal in its mouth off the side of the wall and moved to lunge at the woman again. Another scream pierced the din of battle past the elf woman.
One at a time! The voice cried out and pleaded for help. One at a time!
The elf desperately tried to hold back the abomination with her shield, but it had taken so much damage that the metal was giving out from the onslaught. The monster didn’t let up as the woman backed up over the corpse. Finally, I reached the Elf, and with a heart full of rage, I stabbed a handful of blades deep into the side of the creature, sending it tumbling away. The monster hissed at me as it struggled to get up, but wasn't able to do anything but lay on the ground as its strength was visibly drained, the ends of its spikes started to disappear into soft white light. I looked at the elf, and her brown eyes were full of fear as she held on tightly to what remained of her metal shield.
