An Agent for Danielle (The Pinkerton Matchmaker Book 55), page 8

Much of the history of the Dahomey Kingdom has been passed through oral traditions. Regarding Akaba and Hangbe, they were twins, and each had a claim to throne. Akaba became the king in 1685 but according to tradition, died in 1716 during military combat. It is not known how he died, whether through sickness or via a war wound. Regardless, his sister Hangbe ruled as regent and continued the fight in her brother’s stead. The length of her rule is disputed.
In 1718, she supported the rule of her twin brother’s eldest son Agbo Sassa but her younger brother, Dosu, contested it. Eventually, Dosu, who was also called Agaja (a common name given to a brother born after a set of twins) did indeed become ruler of Dahomey against Hangbe’s wishes. Oral tradition stated that Hangbe’s only son was put to death so he and his descendants would not have claim to the throne. Be that as it may, Hangbe, according to different versions of the story, predicted that the Europeans would conquer Dahomey.
An element I touched on in An Agent for Danielle is the Mino warriors. These women were an all-female guard that protected the king. Think of the movie Black Panther, and the portrayal of T’Challa’s all-female guard.
According to European explorers, they called these women Amazons. These women were often virgins and were highly skilled in the area of combat. After all, they protected the king. In later years, as the wars between Dahomey and France would ensue, these women would be instrumental in holding back the encroaching European powers. However, eventually superior firepower would conquer them, and the kingdom would fall into the hands of the rule of France.
