When the state highway patrol trooper rushed to the passenger side of the SUV, he quickly opened the door. “Ma’am, are you okay?”
He uses his flashlight to look inside. When he sees Kannon on the backset bleeding with his eyes closed, he calls for a metic a second time. “We need a medic now! Child injured!”
“Ma’am, don’t try and move; help is coming! Now, please tell me your name.” He looks at Judge Waters. And what is his name?”
“My name is Mia Thorn, and that’s Judge . . . Keenan Waters . . .”
Back at the Waters mansion, Lillian is almost asleep when her cell phone rings. When she answers, she’s ready. “Hello.”
“Hi, is this Lillian Waters?”
“It is.”
“Ma’am, my name is Trooper Nicholas Barnes.”
“Trooper? Is everything okay?! Why are you calling me so late? What is it? Is it one of my children?”
“It’s your husband, Ma’am.”
As he tells Lillian all the details about the crash, she calls, “No!” Then, there’s a “God, no!” when the trooper said Keenan Sr. might not make it. “I can’t believe this! Where is he now?”
“He is being life-flighted to University Hospital; you and your family should come as soon as possible.”
Lillian surprises herself at how broken up she is. She thinks, Good job, now keep it going. “ . . . Okay . . . I’m going to call his children now. Thank you for calling.”
When Lillian hangs up the line, she sits stone-faced for about thirty seconds before she turns the waterworks right back on as Keenan Jr.’s phone rings in her ear. She thinks, Showtime . . .
