Side Chick Life 2, page 9
“What the fuck is this?” I grumbled.
“That is your life on paper and just so that you know, your secrets out baby boy,” Cookie chuckled taking a peppermint from the candy dish on the end table unwrapping it and popping it in her mouth. “She knows everything and I mean everything baby. I just came here to warn you.”
“Violet knows about my…my wife?”
“Yep and I came here because I know you don’t know who she really is. She’s been putting on this good girl façade for you and everybody in her little high and mighty world, making you think she’s so vanilla but she ain’t. She’s a cold hearted bitch and if you cross her she will get you.”
“I think I can handle some young girl crush, Cookie. Everyone gets mad at things but no one actually does much of the threats they call out. Violet is harmless.” I slammed the photos down on my desk folding my arms in front of me.
“Would someone who was harmless, go through the trouble of having you followed, finding out where you live, figuring out how to see you at work?” Cookie’s eyes were empty. “Yeah, you’re staring at me because you know you’re just trying to pretend like you don’t. Something hasn’t been right with my baby ever since she was a little girl.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean she ain’t been right. That’s what I mean. Let me tell you a little story. Ugh, one day when she was ten I was having a little party right at my house. Everybody was there and it was so crowded and smoky in that bitch you could barely see straight. Well my parents had been dead a long time and I didn’t have no money to be wasting on a baby sitter so I just told Violet to stay in her room and never come out,” she snorted. “Yeah, before you judge me, I went in there to check on her from time to time and feed her and shit. But for the most part I was trying to enjoy my party.”
“Get to the point please.” I waved my hand trying to speed her along.
“Anyway, so I guess I wasn’t watching as well as I should have and one of the guys that was there went in Violet’s room and tried to rape her. He didn’t get in it though. Me and a couple of my friends walked in just as he was biting on her monkey. Ever since that day, she hadn’t been the same. She claims all she wants is to be in love but it’s not love she’s looking for.”
“Then what is she looking for?”
“Control. Men use her like a toilet and have been for a long time. So she figures if she can get one to fall for her and give their all to her then she’s in control of him and the situation. She thinks she can have her way with them and treat them like the toilets by using them until they’re dry. But when that doesn’t go her way she snaps out and loses it. She’s emotionally unstable. Her last victim, she destroyed his career and marriage and now he’s hunting her like a wild dog. He comes by my house every now and then asking about her. The guy before that she stabbed in the shoulder. All she gave him was a small nick and he didn’t even know it. He died four hours later. The guy before that she sent to the crazy house by stalking him for ninety days straight. The police have yet to pin anything on her because they can’t. She’s crazy but she’s also very smart.” Cookie stood headed towards me. “I take the blame for some of this shit. But I tried to get her all the help she needed. None of it worked. Now she’s just out for revenge on anyone that crosses her. I came here to warn you because I’ve seen her work and it ain’t pretty honey. You look like a nice guy but if you’re as smart as you look you need to get out of this shit now.”
“I’ll just call the police if I see her anywhere near me or my family.” I shrugged headed around to the other side of my desk.
“Man, have you been listening to a word that I’ve been saying? The damn police ain’t gonna be able to save you when it’s too late. She’s smart. You can’t underestimate what she will do,” Cookie warned. “You’ve already fucked up by fucking with her.”
“Well, Cookie, I appreciate you coming here and telling me all this. But I think I’ve got this.” Gently placing my hand on her back, I escorted her to my office door. “Thanks for coming by.”
“Hmm. Well since you’re a strong man able to take care of himself, what do you think about taking on all this caramel goodness?” Cookie rubbed both of her hands from her shoulders on past her tits and down to her protruding stomach as she raised her eyebrows at me repeatedly.
“Are you serious right now?” Fuck confused, I was mortified.
“Hell yeah. All I’ve gotta do is hike this up and I can show you what a real pussy can do.” She winked.
I damn near hurled in right on her face trying to refrain from making the gagging motions towards her. “That’s why your daughter’s fucked up because you’re fucked up. Lady, please leave my office. Thank you for the information but no thanks.”
Our attention was quickly jilted to the window. We rushed over to see what all the commotion was that was going on outside. There was a loud boom like something had fallen from the sky and crashed. But at the window all I could see was a large ball of fire roaring up from across the street. It was difficult to make out what was happening exactly. A crowd quickly gathered around the scene as my eyes squinted trying to make out what was on fire from way up in my office. Slowly it became clear what had just taken place.
“My fucking car!” My eyes bulged as I jumped over the leather chairs racing for the door with my mouth agape.
“So it begins, aye doctor,” Cookie laughed in a rather malevolent tone calling after.
Her remark stopped me in my tracks compelling me to think. Our eyes locked as a sinister type of grin filled her face. It was then that I understood that this shit wasn’t a game. There was some truth in what Cookie was saying and I needed to get my shit prepared for when I saw Violet again. I took my phone out trying to call her but it went straight to voicemail each time. Heading down the hall and onto the elevator, my whole world felt like it was being tossed around like pizza dough. And just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse from here, there was another explosion. Thank God for my fucking insurance.
Mika
The warm end of summer breeze graced my skin as I exited the car. Ox was right by my side with the goons hanging back standing around just in case they were needed. We rushed up to the scene. Police and detectives were everywhere but none of that concerned Ox. I was thinking he didn’t need to be around any of this seeing as though his line of business didn’t make him the most favorable businessman in the city. But he seemed unfazed in such a hostile environment. We headed straight for the yellow crime scene tape going under it like it wasn’t even there.
“Hey, I need to speak to someone about the body they found in the water,” I said walking straight up to one of the detectives.
“Aye, ma’m you can’t be over here,” a blue shirted officer intercepted my path putting his hands on my shoulders to push me back.
“Hey man, don’t put your hands on her bro,” Ox growled stepping in putting his arm out in between us.
“I’m trying to maintain the crime scene here and you all can’t be on this side of the tape. Period.” The officer hawked both of us down.
“Okay, that’s cool but don’t put your hands on her cuz,” Ox barked again. “Do you know who the fuck you talking to homie?”
“Aye man, I don’t give a fuck who you are. I’m doing my fucking job.” The officer eyed him as he dismissed me to square off with Ox.
“Oh yeah? Com’ here bro, let me holla at you for a minute,” as the two men stepped to the side, I was halted by other officers who were then told to stand down two minutes later by the officer speaking to Ox.
I didn’t know what the fuck they were over there talking about but whatever it was Ox got me through with no problem. I was, however, halted by the detectives but they didn’t put their hands on me either. Instead, they asked me to step to the side and they would tell me everything if I were indeed involved with the case. Everyone spoke so calmly to me. The whole demeanor in the air changed.
“Ma’am, you say you have reason to believe that the baby in the water is your son? How did you come to that conclusion?” The detective asked me as he wrote some shit down on his notepad.
“Because his father kidnapped him the other day. I have the police report right here.” My fingers worked overtime removing the paper from my pocket handing it over to him.
“Okay, here you take this back. Hold on to it. My name is Detective Sims and I would appreciate it if you would go with me to the precinct to answer a few questions.” He handed me a business card.
“Why do I need to go down to the precinct to answer some questions that I can answer right here?” I asked stuffing the card down in my jeans pocket.
“Ma’am it’s just routine for us to question you at the station and that way we can get away from all this disorder,” he retorted calmly.
“No, I don’t want to go anywhere to answer any questions. I want to know if that was my son you all found in the water. I just want someone with some competence to tell me what the hell is really going on here.” Rage rose in to the back of my throat enthralling me to yell.
“Calm down baby,” Ox approached me rubbing his hand soothingly along my back. “Detective, is there anyway we can view the body to see if it is her son or not?”
“The body isn’t here. It’s already been transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office. You guys can go on over there and request to see the body. Take this card. They will know that it’s okay for you to view the body. Please give me a call if it is your son so that we may speak further please.”
Ox and I rushed over to the car without another word to the detective. The goons weaved in and out of traffic without fear of consequence. All I could do on the ride over was pray that once we got there I would be more relieved than grieving. Deep in my heart, I felt like it wasn’t going to be Keylan in that morgue lying on the cold stainless steel slab. I had one job in this world and that was to protect my son from those who caused him harm and I couldn’t even succeed in doing that. Trying not to continue to mentally beat my ass, I watched as we pulled up in front of the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office making it there in no time.
“You ready?” Ox asked as he held the door open for me.
“Yeah. I’ve gotta know.”
We entered the building headed towards the front desk letting them know the reason for our visit flashing the card the detective had given us. Immediately we were lead down a hallway where we were greeted warmly by a brown skinned Medical Examiner with a short slicked down hair cut and glasses. She shook our hands and escorted us into a room where we would be able to view the body of the child through the large glass window.
I tried to get a peek behind the curtain that covered the other side of the window, but that was a fail. She braced us trying to prepare us for what we would see. When she said the body was badly decomposed due to the water and other organisms eating on the flesh I damn near fainted. She went on to say that gratefully the face was still in perfect enough condition that it could be recognized and that it would still be a weak sight. I thought my heart would stop.
“Are you ready, ma’am?” She asked.
“Yes, please let’s just do this and get it over with. I can’t take the suspense much longer,” I cried before she left the room.
“Now you don’t have to look if you don’t want to. I’ll look for you and let you know if you’d like.” Ox held me so tightly.
“No, I’ve gotta look into his face and see if it’s my baby. I need to see if it’s my son.” I shook my head.
“Once I remove the curtain I will push the body in front of the window,” the medical examiner said over the intercom. “Once again I apologize for our TV screen not working in this room. We usually have them up and running but we’ve gotta get someone on that.”
It was typical of the county not to have something together on their end. I shook my head and closed my eyes as I heard the curtain being pulled to the side. Ox continued to hold me close rubbing my arm and keeping his composure remaining strong for me. I could hear the wheels of the slab being pushed around the other room and once the noise stopped I forced myself to open my eyes. The sheet was still covering the body, annoying me so. Finally, she removed the sheet from the small body’s face resting right under the neck. I moved closer to the glass to get a better look focusing in on all of the baby’s features.
“No,” the word escaped my lips.
“No?” The Medical Examiner asked over the intercom.
“No?” Ox asked as well.
“No, it’s not him. It’s not my baby. It’s not my baby.” I smiled brightly almost wanting to jump for joy. “That’s not Keylan. That’s not my son, baby.”
“Ma’am, before you go, I’d just like to show you one more thing,” the Medical Examiner said over the intercom leaving the window and returning with a bag. “This was found on his person. Do you recognize this?”
“His? It’s a boy?” I looked her in her eye as she nodded her head to confirm.
Hesitantly, my eyes leered down at the bracelet sitting in the bag. It was a tiny gold link bracelet. She took it out the bag and placed it on the cart in front of the window before turning it over revealing a nameplate.
“Did you say his name was Keylan?” The lady asked.
“Yes but…” I stared down at the nameplate once more, realizing I had bought that bracelet when we were at the mall on one of our visits with David. “That’s…not…”
“It’s okay baby. It’s gonna be okay,” Ox said taking a deep breath.
“No Ox, you don’t understand. It doesn’t look like him. That’s not him. No that’s not my baby,” I protested becoming frantic.
“It’s gonna be okay baby. I’ve got you. We’re gonna handle this.”
“No Ox, no. That’s not my baby. That can’t be him. That’s not my baby. Oh Lord. Oh Lord. No, that’s not him. That’s not my son,” I yelled feeling my knees grow weak but Ox caught me every time. Tears burst from my eyes feeling a huge lump in the back of my throat as I screeched horridly, “Keylan! Keylan!”
“I know baby. I got you.” Ox signaled to the Medical Examiner to confirm and close the curtain.
“I’m very sorry. I’ll give you some time before I come in for you to sign some papers for his belongings and some to give to the place you will be making arrangements,” the lady said before turning the intercom off.
I was distraught. I couldn’t contain myself. No words could be written or spoken for the amount of pain that I was feeling in my heart. No parent should have to bury his or her child. Silently, I begged the Lord to help me through this because I knew I would never make it alone.
I wouldn’t be able to continue to live the rest of my life knowing that the person who was supposed to love and protect him the most, the person who gave him life took that same life without giving one fuck. His young existence was cut short for nothing more than a jealous rage. It was a reality that I wasn’t prepared to accept yet even though it was slapping me in the face.
“Baby, I need you to be strong now. Keylan’s killer is still out there and you have to bring him to justice, Mika. He needs you to be strong,” Ox insisted trying to snap me up out of my crying flailing fit. As he sat me down in the chair near the door and I hyperventilated something out of this world, I showed him that none of that shit he said worked.
“He was my only child, my only son, oh Lord,” I felt light headed, hoping I would pass out and hit my head on the floor to go with my baby. “It was supposed to be me not him. Keylan! Keylan!”

Violet
This motherfucka thought he was slick, gonna fuck me and leave me so quick. That’s cool too. Now he can look over his shoulder with the rest of them clowns. I didn’t give a fuck about his pregnant bitch at home. I didn’t give a fuck about nothing anymore. It was all fucked up now, everything. He had me out here thinking and doing dumb shit. He wouldn’t miss that car anyway.
I’m sure he had another one in the garage waiting to be driven. That’s what nigga’s with money did. They took what they wanted and put it on the shelf only taking it out when they were bored or ready to play with it again. I was not a toy to be fucking played with.
I pulled up in front of his house staring at the mansion like pad thinking it should’ve been mine. That bitch didn’t deserve to have this place. It should have been mine. I pulled back a little behind the black gate so as not to be seen directly. Exiting the car, I headed right up to the door wondering if anyone was inside. Vega was at work I was sure of it but her lazy pregnant ass should’ve been in there lounging around. I rang the doorbell and waited for a maid or anyone to open the door. I rang the doorbell again.
“Alright, it’s a doorbell not a ‘lean on me’ button,” a lady yelled as she came to the door. “Hello, may I help you?”
“Hi.”
“Uh, hello. May I help you?” The lady popped her gum. “Uh, don’t tell me you’re another one of Jay’s baby momma’s coming to look for a hand out. Listen we don’t have anything. Okay? And, even if we did, you need to give us a fucking blood test first before we give up any type of money. You hear me little girl?”
Little girl? That shit pissed me off to my core. She had some nerve judging me before she even knew me. Little girl? I was far from that, bitch. But she had no idea who the fuck she was dealing with. Instead of letting her know, I stood there smiling at her almost laughing even. She was the bitch that was keeping my man from me. The abomination growing in her small protruding womb was the reason why he couldn’t call, text, or come by anymore.
“Hello? You’re just gonna stand there looking like a creep or what?” She snapped her fingers in my face.
“I just needed to see your face. You’re very beautiful.” I continued to smile trying not to become annoyed by her finger snapping.
