  ‘Well?’

Was the voice now not so certain? Were the green eyes clouded with a hint of doubt?

And suddenly Josh didn’t want her doubting or uncertain. Didn’t want to cause her a moment’s pain, though he knew he probably would, some time in the future.

But for now it was enough to gather her into his arms, pulling her onto his knee and holding her close.

‘How does for ever sound to you?’ he whispered, pushing the heavy fall of hair aside so he could nuzzle her ear as he spoke. ‘For ever and ever, in sickness and health, and all that mushy wedding stuff—but you and I, when we say it, we’ll mean it. Or at least I will.’

He eased her back so he could look at her face—so she could look at him as well.

  ‘Will you? For ever?’

Kirsten nodded, and tears welled up in her eyes, and because he couldn’t bear to see his redhead cry, he drew her close again and kissed the tears away.

From her eyelids, then her cheeks, her lips, and right on down her neck. He ran out of excuses after that but kissed other bits of her anyway, in celebration of the great event. A Phillips committing to marriage and meaning it in the true sense of the word—commitment!
