  Chapter One

My breath huffs out as I push myself to keep up with the lean male ahead of me. My legs burn with fatigue, and my body begs for me to stop. Sweat drips down my back in what feels like waves as I continue ahead, one foot in front of the other. Running is torture.

“Come on, keep it up, Ember. You can’t slack off. You have to be strong. We need to see if we can’t force the change.”

I huff, giving his back the stink eye. “Give me a break, Corey. I think I’m doing alright keeping up with a male shifter who’s already had his first transition into a wolf.”

“You know that isn’t good enough. The Alpha’s already putting pressure on your family because you’re still unchanged. The next Luna needs to be prepared for anything. Your betrothed is concerned.”

“My betrothed can kiss my ass. He knows I don’t want to be with him. We just don’t want to disappoint our parents. Hell, I’m nineteen. I can choose who I want to be with.” I stop, doubling over, attempting to catch my breath. My stomach burns, and my mouth is dry. Why didn’t I bring a bottle of water with me? “I have to stop.”

I hear Corey stop, and the dirt shifts as he whips around. I take in deep breaths, doing my best to fight the cramps in my sides. “You can’t stop, Ember. We’re almost finished. Just another mile or two.”

I stand as straight as possible and place my hands on my hips. I glare menacingly at him. “No, I need a break. You can’t push me like this. It’s not fair. None of this is fair. I didn’t choose this. Adam can find someone else. We don’t even know if we’re meant to be mates.”

He walks to me and puts his hand on my shoulder. “I know it’s not fair, and I hate to push you. Hell, I’m the one keeping secrets from him about you, but you have to try. You don’t have a way out of this, even if he isn’t your mate. Unless he chooses to break the contract your parents made with the Alpha at your birth, you’re stuck. You know the rules. We can’t go against the Alpha.”

I frown and reach up, placing my hand on his cheek. “But where does that leave us? What if you’re my mate? The attraction and the sex are there. That’s all we need to seal the deal, right?”

“No, even if you’re my mate, you know I can’t claim you. That’s not how this pack works. As the next Beta to the future Alpha, I have to do what I’m ordered. Those orders will include not touching the Luna once it’s official.”

“That’s stupid. I know he’s been sleeping with Lacy. What if she’s his mate?”

“I think he’d know if she was. There isn’t a bond between them like that, from what he’s said.”

“Fine, but until we find a way to get me out of this shit, I’m still going to enjoy who I want and whatever I want. That includes you.” I step into him and place my lips against his. What better way to distract him from our training than to put his mind elsewhere?

After a minute, he pulls away. “I know what you’re trying to do. Come on, let’s keep moving. They did put me in charge of your training for a reason, you know. I can’t fail this task.”

  I roll my eyes. “Fine.”

I push off at a slow pace as Corey sprints ahead of me. I let my gaze drop to his ass as he moves. The way those sweatpants hang, showing off the muscles of his core, makes my mouth water. We have known each other since we were kids. He was my best friend for a long time until I took a chance to kiss him. Things quickly escalated from there, but we’ve had to keep our relationship a secret, especially since he and Adam are close. Well, somewhat tight.

Adam is a prick and my pack’s next Alpha. Our parents agreed we should lead the pack one day together and decided to sign a contract stating it. They even had it approved by the council of elders residing over all the paranormal communities—vampires, witches, shifters, and the like. They have done a decent job of keeping our world hidden, but will there ever be a time where we don’t have to hide who we truly are?

I grumble loudly as I continue following Corey. No matter how much training we’ve done, it’s yet to encourage my wolf to surface. She’s in there. I’ve felt her presence a few times, but she refuses to appear. I’ve no idea why. My mother says I’m just a late bloomer, but I haven’t been that in any other areas in life. Why can’t I make the shift happen so she can do all this running?

My legs continue to burn as we make it another mile, and the gentle breeze pushes the smell of smoke in our direction. It has another faint scent that I can’t place, but my steps falter as Corey suddenly stops ahead of me, cursing.

“What’s wrong?” I reorient myself and slow my pace to a walk, stopping at his side.

“You don’t recognize the smell?” He turns to me with a concerned expression. It sends flutters of trepidation through my belly.

  “Smoke? Yeah, why?”

“It’s not just smoke. The smell of death is in it. I need to check it out, then alert the pack. Stay close.” He motions for me to follow behind him, and I roll my eyes. There is no way someone died. Nothing exciting ever happens in this pack, other than an occasional squabble.

“It’s probably just a typical house fire. Supernatural beings aren’t the only ones that live around here, after all. It’s probably just an old man that fell asleep and left the stove on.” I shrug as Corey shakes his head.

“I wouldn’t put hope into that idea.”

We walk a few minutes in silence after that, and I cherish the time to catch my breath. The street around us seems fine with tall trees and evenly spaced plots with houses on them. It’s unusually quiet, though, and unease makes its presence known as we continue to follow the trail of smoke.

“See that ahead?” Corey’s voice startles me, and I follow his line of sight to the house half a block away, covered in flames.

“Oh shit! That’s Amber’s house!” I take off at a sprint toward my childhood friend’s home. Fear screams in the back of my mind, and all reason leaves me as I move with unnatural speed. She has to be okay. Maybe they’re all standing in the backyard or calling the fire department from another house.

I reach the house as flames crackle, and something to my right crashes. I run toward the noise and see Mrs. Bane, Amber’s mother, attempting to crawl out from beneath a board. The board is covered in flames, but they’re different. These flames are black.

I move toward her and grasp the board, ignoring the fire, and lift it off of her as she collapses to the ground. She looks up at me from her position and then at my arm as I hold the board. I follow her gaze and gasp as the black flames lick up my arm and disappear. I shriek a second later and fling the board away from me.

A howl fills the air, and I turn my gaze back to Mrs. Bane, whose eyes have turned a creepy black. Her body begins to change and elongate, but it’s different from her usual shift from human to wolf. Slime leaks from her eyes and coats her entire body as talons bust from her hands.

She lunges for me, only to be stopped by a large body barreling into her. Her body flies back into the burning house, and I stare in shock as the house collapses on top of her.

I turn, glaring at the dark red and brown wolf whose fur is bristled. He growls toward the house as if Mrs. Bane is going to come back.

“What the hell, Corey! She needs our help!”

He turns and glares over his shoulder at me. Shrieking noises come from the pile of fiery rubble, pulling his attention back. I follow him and stare at what I thought was Mrs. Bane rising on wings with four talons beneath her. She flies toward us, and I scream as I’m yanked back. Wind surrounds me as arms encircle my waist in a familiar hold.

“Calm down. It’s me. I’m getting you out of here. I beat the rest

of the wolves here. You're one lucky lady,” a voice drawls out in my ear.

“Zeke! Oh my God! We can’t leave Corey! We have to go back!” I start hitting his back with my fists. He just chuckles and repositions me.

A sharp squeal follows us from the burning fire, and I hear growling from multiple wolves. Hopefully they got there before that thing destroys Corey.

“He’s going to be okay, Ember. He’s the next Beta for a reason. He’s strong. You’ll see.” He begins to slow down, and I take in our surroundings. We traveled miles in what seems like only a few seconds. I guess that’s one thing vampires have over us wolves is their intense speed. We may be fast, but they’re always faster.

“What was that thing? Did you see it?” I feel the adrenaline moving through my body, and something in me stirs.

“That was an Imp, a creature from hell. They aren’t the friendliest creatures. They normally don’t reveal themselves. Did it hurt you or anything?” He stops suddenly, jolting me, and sets me on my feet. He looks me over and lifts my arms, then puts them down. “Do you need healing? Do you need some of my blood?”

I slap his shoulder. “No, I don’t need any blood. I’m fine. She didn’t touch me.”

He looks me dead in the eye, as if trying to discern if I’m genuinely hurt or not. “Did anything else happen?”

I go to speak when I hear a door open from somewhere close. I turn and realize we’re standing in the front yard of my parents’ house. It’s not too far from the pack house where the Alpha and his family reside, as well as several enforcers and the Beta’s family.

“Oh, honey, are you okay? Your father just told me what happened through our bond. Are you hurt? Zeke, did you look her over?”

“She’s perfectly fine, Kyra. Not a single hair was touched,” Zeke says, resting a hand on my shoulder.

“Thank the goddess. Come inside. We can have some coffee. Your father will be around after a while,” Mom says and turns, ushering us to follow her.

“Did he mention if Corey was alright?” I ask, and I notice my mother’s shoulders stiffen. She’s always been concerned about how close I am to him, but we’ve never let on that we’re together. Even Zeke has kept it quiet.

“He didn’t say, but he did mention that the pack uncovered the bodies of the entire Bane family. I’m sorry, honey, I know you and Amber were once close.” Her voice seems to move through a fog as memories of playing Barbies with Amber in the backyard surface from the recesses of my brain.

Her long blond curls would bounce around her when we laughed as kids. She had an early transition and began training to be a Sentinel on the pack borders shortly after. It made finding time to hang out difficult.

I feel a gentle nudge as Zeke’s hand pushes me forward. He then proceeds to pull me into his side. I look over at him and offer him a small smile of thanks, and we follow my mom the rest of the way into the house.

Zeke has been around since I turned fourteen. He and my mother met back when she was young, and he deemed himself a guardian for the family at that time. I’m not sure why and none of the specifics have ever been shared, but he went away for a time to do who knows what. Mom claimed he was like a different man when he returned.

Zeke’s always seems to appear when I need him the most or right when I am about to do something stupid that I probably would regret later on. Like the time I got dared to jump off the roof of another family’s home into their pool in the dead of night, and he stopped me from completing it.

I knew it wasn’t a good idea, but I had to show that stupid Lacy up. I know I don’t want to be with Adam, but it pisses me off that she gloats about it in front of other shifters that she and he are an item. It doesn’t look good for me when she does it. If Zeke hadn’t stopped me, I probably would have broken something, and considering I haven’t fully transitioned into my wolf yet, my healing is barely above that of a human. It would have taken me weeks, or possibly months, to recover from that.

He also kissed me that night and told me that he would always be here waiting, no matter how things end up. I wasn’t sure how to take that at the time, but things haven’t been awkward, and he hasn’t kissed me since. I don’t know if he still feels that way or what, but it doesn’t matter because I’m with Corey and tied to Adam.

I’m brought out of my thoughts when I feel something cold hit the back of my legs. I blink and look down to find the couch behind me and plop down on it. I look up and see Zeke’s concerned expression, but he remains silent as my mom busies herself in the kitchen. I watch his eyes, which are the most gorgeous brown I have ever seen. They are like molten chocolate in one of those chocolate desserts that ooze chocolate out when you cut into it with a fork. His curly black hair hangs loosely around his face, and his dark skin seems to glisten with power. Wait, when have I ever been able to see his power?

My eyes widen, and I look him up and down as if taking him in for the first time. There is definitely a sheen of magic that seems to hover over his skin, and a colorful aura surrounds him. It varies in colors, and his brows droop low as he frowns.

“What?” His voice seems to calm me, and I meet his gaze. My cheeks heat, and I know I’m blushing. His brows shoot up. “What in the world? Why are you blushing?”

“I can see your magic. I’ve never been able to see it before. Why can I now? Are you doing something to make it visible?” My breath rushes out with my words as I word vomit. What is going on with me?

“Are you sure nothing else happened back there at the fire? I’m not doing anything different from what I usually do around you,” he quietly whispers and glances in the direction of the kitchen.

My mom is still shuffling around in there. I thought she was just getting coffee, but now it sounds like she’s making food. I don’t feel like eating, so maybe that means we have company coming. Great.

“Well, yeah, something weird happened. Mrs. Bane, I mean the Imp thing, was under a board that was lit up with black flames and regular flames. I picked it up to let her out, and the flames ran up my arm and disappeared. I didn’t have any burns or anything, but I threw it away from me. The thing’s eyes changed from those of Mrs. Bane to black, and then Corey appeared. It all happened so fast.”

“Wait, did you absorb the flames?” Zeke’s expression is serious, which causes me to squirm.

I look down at my right arm and stare at it as if the answer would appear on it. Nothing happens, of course, so I meet Zeke’s gaze again as I say, “I guess I did.”

He stands quickly as he curses and begins pacing the room. My mother, I guess, having heard his cussing fit, comes running and stares at us both for a second.

“Did something happen?” she asks, looking between Zeke and me.

“She touched hellfire, Kyra. She absorbed it,” Zeke says, coming to a stop and staring at my mother, whose face has paled.

“What is hellfire? Is it bad?” I ask in confusion, staring at the two of them.

“You want to tell her what hellfire is, Kyra? Why the hell did you never tell me what she was? I knew there was a reason I was drawn to her.” Zeke’s voice grows, and I sit shocked at the edge of the sofa, having never heard him raise his voice at me or Mom.

“I couldn’t tell you, Zeke! Her father knows, but no one else,” my mother retorts and runs a hand through her hair. It’s her usual sign of stress.

“What’s going on? Is there something you’re keeping from me?” I ask my mom, who stares at me for a whole two seconds before she begins to pace.

A bell chimes from the kitchen, and the scent of coffee and cookies fills the air.

“Is the Alpha coming back with Dad?” I ask, praying she says no.
