“They didn't suffer nearly as much as me,” Loni said, staring blankly at Susan while her finger edged toward the trigger.

Susan quickly glanced down at Henry lying on the floor. The patches of blood trickling down his shirt. She could not remember how many bullets Calvin put in the gun, but knew there were more than three.

  “It's empty,” Susan lied.

It was all she could think of to say. When Loni hesitated, Susan grabbed the gun. By then the kitchen door had opened.

“We're back here,” Susan yelled as she pulled the bedspread up around Loni and then she stumbled over to help Calvin.

  * * *

Henry never made it to the hospital. He took with him the secrets of his tormented life. Through careful searching of his home and property, it was discovered there were more women he lured into his web of torture and hate.

It took some searching, but they finally found Peter's body at the bottom of the shaft that Jenny was discovered in. Jacob and Margaret laid him to rest in the plot next to Jenny, where they could be together for eternity.

Loni had a long road to recover from the emotional scars inflicted on her during her ordeal. But with the help of family and friends, she would some day deal with that pain.

Calvin was unconscious for two days. In that time, he only hung onto life by a thread. Susan barely left his side. She waited patiently for his eyes to open, thankful that he made it back in time to put a stop to Henry's reign of terror.

Susan had plenty of time to reflect on all that had happened. She spent most of her days at the hospital with Calvin. Rather than go up to the lake she stayed with Jacob and Margaret at the farm.

It was the third day after the confrontation at Peter's. Susan was sitting at Calvin's hospital bed watching the beeps on the heart monitor and praying for a miracle. She held onto Calvin's hand as she had done for days now. But unlike all the other days, she felt the reflex action of his hand. Susan glanced down at Calvin.

  “Calvin,” Susan whispered softly.

Slowly the lids opened. Calvin stared up at her as she leaned forward while holding his hand tightly.

  “You still here?” he whispered.

  “Where else would I be?”

  “I thought you were leaving?”

“I couldn't leave you like this,” Susan whispered.

  “Then you've changed your mind?”

“Put it this way, I'm reconsidering.”

Calvin smiled. He was still weak and ached from the massive cut he endured, but only one thought was on his mind.

“Where are you having the furniture delivered?”

“I don't know, what's your lake address?” Susan whispered while bending down and kissing Calvin gently on the lips.

She was not going to run any longer. This was going to be home for her, for as long as Calvin would have her.
