1 Louis Aragon, 1897–1972, Surrealist poet, novelist and Communist. Gustave Eiffel, 1832–1923, engineer noted for building railway bridges and the Eiffel Tower. Guy Môquet, 1924–1941, a Communist activist executed by the Nazis when he was only seventeen.
2 Jean Ferrat, 1930–2010, French singer best known for his settings of Louis Aragon. This song is about Robert Desnos, 1900–1945, Surrealist poet, who died in Theresienstadt concentration camp.

About the Author
Laurent Petitmangin was born in 1965 in the east of France into a family of railway workers. What You Need From The Night is his first novel. It has won several prizes, including the Prix Femina des lycéens, the Prix Stanislas and the Paris Libraries Prize. He lives north of Paris with his four children.
