Tailing Trouble, page 27
Ally grinned as she watched Noah’s heart melt, his broad hand coming up to stroke the animal. “You’re a good boy, aren’t you, Bandit?” He stroked the puppy’s dark fur as the dog clung to him.
“Thank you so much for taking him,” Wendy gushed. “I have a little care package for you. I’ll drop it by the veterinary clinic, okay?”
There was only the barest hint of indecision before Noah acquiesced. “Okay. Thanks, Ms. Granger.”
Wendy hurried off, as if unwilling to give Noah the opportunity to change his mind.
“Furry parenthood looks good on you, Noah,” Ally teased.
“Why do I have the feeling I’m going to regret this?” Noah asked dryly.
“You won’t. You’ll love him.” She couldn’t seem to wipe the silly grin off her features.
Roxy sniffed Bandit with interest, her stubby tail wagging.
“You know what this means, don’t you?” Noah asked, pinning her with an intense stare.
“I said I’d help you, Noah,” Ally assured him.
“Not that, although I will need your help on days I have to work late. I’m talking about the two of us having dinner.”
“Dinner?” she echoed, surprised he’d brought it up.
“Alfonzo’s, the two of us, tomorrow night.” Noah gently set the puppy down on his feet. The pup immediately jumped up to playfully nip at Roxy. Ally could swear the boxer eyed her through sad eyes, as if to ask why she was being punished. “I’ll pick you up.”
“I’d like that, Noah. Very much,” Ally agreed.
Noah bent to haul the puppy up and into his arms again, much to Roxy’s relief. The boxer hugged Ally’s legs, as if anxious to stay far from Bandit. “Meet you back at the clinic? I’ll need you to make a list of what I’ll need to take care of this little guy.”
“Of course.” Ally watched as Noah and Bandit walked away, resting her palm on Roxy’s broad head. “Sorry, girl, but you’re going to have to get used to having Bandit around.”
Roxy made a huffing noise that sounded suspiciously like a sigh.
“Well, well, well,” Gramps drawled. “Looks as if he’s your detective after all.”
Ally didn’t have the strength to argue with him. Because she kinda thought Gramps was right.
It appeared as if Noah and Bandit would be a part of her life in the foreseeable future.
A smile bloomed. She could hardly wait.
